Interviewer: Along with Milstein, what violinists inspired you? Does that inspiration find its way into your own playing? Jenson: Interviewer: How did you start playing the violin? Jenson: I started on the violin when I was two and-a-half with my mother, who is not a violinist. She learned how to play the violin from library books Interviewer: Really! Jenson: she would teach herself the night before and teach us the next day, with another brother and sister, the three of us; initiation by just doing it. She taught me for a few years, and then she got up to the Bach Double with me and then couldn't keep up with me, so then I went to a regular teacher. I studied with Manuel Compinsky until I was twelve. He was a wonderful teacher: He really did what my father called "supervised practice." That is, I would have four or five lessons a week, and he would practice with me. What he taught me was how to practice. For example, just to say to somebody, "well, go home and work on your intonation." People have no idea what that requires, and this is what Mr. Compinsky taught me, was how to practice and he was meticulous. I remember many lessons in which I would be exhausted (laughs), practically falling asleep, but he wouldn't let one note go by if it was out of tune. He was such an incredible teacher. She has received unparalled critical acclaim for her performances with major orchestras throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan, Latin America, Australia and Russia. Hailed by the New York Times as a "mature master," and as "one of the few extraordinary violin soloists in the world" by Frankfurt's Ruhr-Nachrichten , Dylana Jenson is one of America's premiere violinists today. From her acre-and-a-half of "paradise" (as she calls it) in New Mexico, where she resides with her husband, conductor David Lockington, and children, Dylana gave us this interview in the Summer of 1998. Interviewer: As a soloist, what is your own personal view towards musical interpretation?
To what extent is technique important in communicating a piece of music? Dylana Jenson: As far as interpretation goes, I really think that the technical is only a vehicle for expression. If you make people aware of the technical as being awe-inspiring, then you've really lost the point of what interpretation is all about. So, even when I'm playing Paganini, I feel it in a musical way, and I hope that the technical should serve the musical expression.

G.R. Symphony conductor to play at festival
World-class violinist Dylana Jenson and her husband, Grand Rapids Symphony conductor David Lockington, cello, will make their first appearance at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck during the second week of this summer's concert series. Lockington and Jenson will join frequent festival contributors Robert Byrnes, piano, and Joan Conway, piano, for performances of music by Frank Bridge, Claude Debussy and Johannes Brahms at the Woman's Club of Saugatuck at 8 p.m. tonight and Friday. A native of Great Britain, David Lockington completed his bachelor of aArts degree at the University of Cambridge and received his master's degree in cello performance from Yale University. Lockington has been music director of the Grand Rapids Symphony since January 1999; the long list of orchestras for which he has held the same position includes the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, the Denver Young Artists' Orchestra, the Boulder Bach Festival, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and New Mexico Symphony, and the Long Island Philharmonic. By the age of 13, Jenson has performed with most major orchestras in the United States and traveled to Europe and Latin America for concerts, recitals, and recordings. Jenson has toured Australia and Japan and was made an Honorary Citizen of Costa Rica for her artistic contribution to that country. Her recent performances have included Louisiana Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. She is currently distinguished professor of music at Grand Valley State University.

David began his career as a cellist and holds degrees from the University of Cambridge and Yale where he began studying conducting. As a cellist, David was a member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and served as assistant principal cellist with the Denver Symphony Orchestra before turning to conducting full -time. He continues playing chamber music and concertizing as his conducting schedule allows. David is married to violinist Dylana Jenson, who will be joining him onstage in his appearance with the Mozart Festival Orchestra for a performance of Samuel Barber's gorgeous Violin Concerto. David and Dylana reside with their four children in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Michael Morgan currently serves as Music Director of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, the Sacramento Philharmonic, and the Festival Opera at Walnut Creek. Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' opens concert series at the Z

Mozart's tuneful opera, "The Marriage of Figaro," will open the 1995-1996 season for the Greater New Bedford Concert Series. Staged by the Western Opera Theatre, the opera will be presented at the Zeiterion Theatre at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Mozart's musical recounting of love, desire and philandering is one of the world's most popular operas. San Francisco director Peter McClintock has staged the opera; Rodolfo Fisher of Chile will conduct. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.
The production of the opera has won high praise from critics in San Francisco, San Jose and San Mateo; the artists and the set came in for high critical applause.
Among the cast members is Stephen Salters of Milford, Conn. A graduate of Boston University, he recently received critical acclaim for his performance in the Boston Lyric Opera's production of "The Barber of Seville." Mr. Salters, a baritone, has performed extensively as a soloist, both in concert and in recitals.
Among other artists to be seen and heard will be bass-baritone John Haley-Relyea of Toronto, Australian tenor Stuart Skelton, and mezzo-soprano Maria Wood, a native of North Carolina.

A native of Great Britain, he was appointed the Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra in January 1999 and is the former Music Director of the New Mexico Symphony and the Long Island Philharmonic.
Recent guest conducting engagements include his debuts with the Oregon, Phoenix, Columbus (OH), San Diego, Nashville, North Carolina, Fort Worth and Toledo symphonies. During the 2003/04 season, Mr. Lockington returns to the orchestras in Indianapolis, Colorado and Kansas City and makes his debuts with the Toronto and Syracuse symphonies.
