A Fresh Breeze for the ASO's 41st Season Guest Artists Delight World Audiences For the 2001-2002 season Maestro Leslie B. Dunner has programmed a year of splendid concertos, with a dazzling array of young guest artists to present them to ASO audiences. While only one of them is older than 35, they include faculty members at Eastman and Peabody Conservatories and veterans of nearly one hundred appearances with professional orchestras and ensembles throughout the world. They perform on world-famous instruments and hold some of the most prestigious international prizes of classical music. Twenty-one year old Julie Albers is actually returning in May 2002 for her second appearance with the ASO. Last season she delighted Annapolitans with a performance of Prokofiev's "Sinfonia Concertante" that critic James Avis called "mature and sensitive" as he praised her "masterful technique and an instrumental voice full of sonorous expression." The 1946 Concerto for Cello and Orchestra by Samuel Barber will showcase these qualities and provide subscriber audiences with a remarkable opportunity to enjoy the development of a cellist destined to be heard for many years.

• Page E5 Despite the well-publicized cutbacks in the classical music recording industry, high-quality releases keep finding their way to the marketplace. While there are fewer coming from the big companies, smaller firms (perhaps devoted more to the music and less purely to the bottom line) are filling the gap with plenty of interesting material - and the biggies aren't dead yet. "The Earliest Songbook in England" (Gothic Voices; Christopher Page, director. Hyperion CDA67177) may have an unimaginative title, but its music is winning. It gets its name from its source material, "a few leaves of parchment folded together, poorly written, decayed by damp, marred by stains and the ravages of time," as Page writes in the liner notes. Copied by an unknown collector around 1200, preserved by being recycled as flyleaves in another volume, these monophonic (solo) and polyphonic (written for multiple voices) are mostly religious in nature, but sometimes move into secular territory. Charming tunes like "Magno guadens gaudio" and sophisticated writing as found in "Ad honorem salvatoris" (in two versions) help to make this a disc of interest. From the oddly named label Discipline Global Mobile comes "Josquin des Prez: Sixteenth-Century Lute Settings," thoughtfully and stylishly played by Jacob

by Jerald D. Pope Unlike Columbus and his Spanish underwriters, however, the Vikings managed not to wipe out entire nations of natives during their stay. Not having guns, horses or sufficient gold lust, they eventually retreated before the Indians' objections. And while Columbus can boast his own bank holiday, among other dubious decorations, the Vikings' adventures in "Vinland" receded into the depths of Icelandic saga. Symphonie Fantastique, Aram Khatchaturian's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Minor, and a new, three-minute work by Icelandic composer Atli Sveinsson, titled Icerapp 2000. Featured will be young violinist Judith Ingolfsson, a native Icelander who studied in the United States and has recently been garnering a slew of international awards. Philistines might crab that Icelanders, huddled on the shores of their Arctic island, don't have anything else to do during their long winter nights. But Iceland is actually a pretty nice place. Though the country's perched at the northern end of the Gulf Stream, its climate is surprisingly temperate, averaging about 41 degrees. The island is laced with both glaciers and volcanoes, providing its inhabitants with free geothermal heat (not to mention dramatic scenery and equally dramatic earthquakes, floods and lava eruptions). There's an old joke that Erik the Red, Leif's father (hence "Eriks-son") named the frigid island "Greenland" and the pleasanter one "Iceland" to confuse the expected waves of settlers. Fortunately, 10th-century immigrants, of which there weren't hordes, were drawn to more accessible pickings: Erik's hopes and fears went for naught. The population of Iceland has peaked at a quarter of a million, while Greenlanders number around 55,000, living in an area about eight times the size of North Carolina, 32 times bigger than Iceland.

59. Letter From The Director
We are pleased to be able to present to you two worldclass soloists during ourseason violinist judith ingolfsson and classical guitarist Ernesto Bitetti.
http://www.elkhartcountysymphony.org/letter.html
A Letter from the Director
Dear Music Lovers, We are very excited to present to you the "Wide World of Music" for our 2001-2002 season! Not only will you hear tried-and-true symphonic favorites, but you will also experience many other types and styles of music, from the rhythmic verve and tunefulness of the music of Spanish and Hispanic composers to the drive and soul of African-American music. We are pleased to be able to present to you two world-class soloists during our season: violinist Judith Ingolfsson and classical guitarist Ernesto Bitetti. Ms. Ingolfsson will perform the incomparable Violin Concerto of Beethoven, and Mr. Bitetti performs perhaps the best-known of all guitar concertos, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez , a concerto so popular that its second movement has been arranged and adapted by famous performers of jazz and pop music. There are wonderful surprises awaiting you at every concert, including the Jubilee Ringers and the Elkhart County Symphony Chorus at our Holiday concert in December, and a community Festival Gospel Choir at our April "Amazing Grace" concert. We will also feature the Elkhart Central High School Orchestra and the winner of the 2002 Student Concerto Competition at our February concert. We are happy to have Elkhart's own Celia Weiss as guest organ soloist at our March concert, along with the Elkhart County Symphony Chorus and Goshen Community Chorale. She will be performing Poulenc's Organ Concerto on the "King of the Instruments," the organ.
