Impatient bluster foils a once-forgotten phrase
BRONISLOW HUBERMAN Brahms: Sonata for violin and piano in G major, Op. 78 J.S. Bach: Partita for solo violin in d minor, BWV 1004 Schubert: Fantasy in C major for piano and violin, D. 934 Sarasate: Romanza Andaluza, Op. 22, no.1 (Arbiter) Bronislaw Huberman (1882-1947) is one of the many forgotten heroes of the music world. While his name is virtually unknown in this country, the orchestra he founded 50 years ago warrants universal praise. What is currently known as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is a product of this man's arduous mission to find a musical home for Jewish musicians who lost their positions as a result of
Nazi policies. In addition to being a social and political activist, the Polish-born violinist was one of the most respected musicians of his generation. As one of the last adherents of a nineteenth-century style of violin playing, Huberman used wide vibratos, extensive sliding between notes, and exaggerated agogic accents. The printed page was never sacrosanct to Huberman, and his interpretations were recognized for their beauty of tone and individuality. These recently-released live recordings, made between 1936 to 1942, attest to those qualities. Huberman had a special affinity for the music of Brahms; as a child, he performed for the composer and received a rare compliment from the master. Indeed, there are some wonderful moments in Huberman's slightly idiosyncratic reading of the G major violin sonata. One of these occurs in

Dear Editor:

Publicist
Dear Editor:
"One should not eat cherries with great men," Brahms once wrote in a letter to Richard Wagner, and what he meant by the German proverb was, "I know I shouldn't tangle with powerful people…." But he did so anyway, because he had something on his mind. I see a bowl of cherries before my eyes as I write to take issue with Roger Norrington, after reading his claims that a Brahms symphony should be played without vibrato (Daniel Wachs's interview with Roger Norrington, "One Brahms Symphony, Hold the Vibrato," December/January issue). "That is how Brahms would have expected his symphony to sound," Maestro Norrington is quoted as saying. Cherry in hesitant hand, I venture to say that it is not as simple as that. For one thing, Brahms is the very last person in the musical world to insist that there was only one "correct" way to play his music. This is the man who said that his blood and a metronome didn't go well together, and who once offered to provide a friend, for a goodly sum of money, a weekly subscription for tempo markings, "because with normal people they cannot remain valid for more than a week." This is also the man who wrote piano and chamber music with a little Graf or even a beautiful Erard at hand, but as soon as he had the clout, insisted on performing those works in public only on American Steinways (yes!) and Bechsteins. As a composer, Brahms was a man who welcomed new possibilities, so long as they were genuinely felt.

Henryk Szeryng - The Life
Back to the Top Page

Henryk Szeryng was born to Polish Jewish parents on 22 September 1918 at Zelazowa, Poland; near Warsaw, birthplace of Frederic Chopin. His family was wealthy and everyone of them loved music.
His father's name is Szymon Szeryng, who was a industriallist, opera-loving man and had a fine baritone voice. His mother was a pianist. She was well known pianist around the town.
He commenced piano and harmony training with his mother when he was five, and at age of seven turned to the violin, under the influence of his elder brother who was learning the violin. He first received instruction from Maurice Frenkel: assistant at St Petersburg to celebrated Leopord Auer.
Henryk made rapid progress. At ten he performed the Mendelssohn Concerto, then Bronislaw Huberman heard him play it, it's not long before that a middle-age violinist recommended to the young prodigy's parents that he continue his studies with renowned teacher Carl Flesch.
At the end of the year with Willy Hess in Berlin, Henryk demanded an audition with Carl Flesch, judging the teaching of Hess to be dated. Flesch, who inspired his profound respect, open the door to a new world, notably in respect of the sound of which the violin was a capable.
Szeryng said "Flesch showed me all the subtleties of bowing technique, and how to coordinate the fingers of the left hand with the right arm to obtain perfect articulation."

Israel Philharmonic Orchestra The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which celebrated its 60th anniversary during 1996, is one of lsrael's oldest and most influential cultural institutions. Its history is inextricably bound with that of the nation itself: on May 14, 1948, the orchestra performed the Israeli national anthem, "Hatikvah," at the official ceremony that declared Israel a sovereign and independent State. Today, as Israel marks its 50th anniversary, the orchestra continues to play a central role in the country's collective life. Music Director Zubin Mehta, who has held this post for three decades, has remarked: "These musicians play for audiences that can't do without them." The founding of the Israel Philharmonic, originally called the Palestine Orchestra, by famed Polish violinist and humanist Bronislaw Huberman in 1936 predated the founding of the State of Israel by twelve years. Its establishment affirmed the importance of music in a land that still faced years of danger and uncertainty before emerging as an independent nation. The ensemble's first concert took place on December 26, 1936, and was conducted by the legendary Arturo Toscanini, himself an impassioned spokesman for freedom. He led "an orchestra of soloists" - first-chair musicians from German and Eastern European orchestras who had lost their positions because of Nazism and were recruited by Huberman to join the new ensemble. The orchestra's early tours of Arab lands - to Egypt (within only a few weeks of its founding) and to Lebanon - reflected the founders' hopes that the new ensemble would serve as an ambassador of goodwill.

In the following years he gave concerts in Europe and America (in 1925 in Vienna he gave 12 concerts) and in 1896 he performed his first interpretation of the Brahms Concerto in the presence of Brahms himself and many other musical authorities in the Hall. Brahms was so delighted with his interpretation that he took the boy and kissed him with tears in his eyes. About 1900 there was an interruption for other education purposes. In 1908 Huberman played on the violin of Paganini in Genoa, an honor which was manifested in a fine golden medal handed to him by the Mayor of Genoa.

The Palestine Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1936 under the leadership of Bronislaw Huberman. Joseph Achron
Achron, born 1886, Lodzdzieje, Poland (now Lasdjaj, Lithuania). Died, 1943, Los Angeles. Violinist, teacher and composer. His brother Isador was a pianist. A child prodigy and a concert soloist. He studied composition in Russia under Anatoly Ljadov. Toured widely, giving more than 1000 concerts between 1919-1922. Served as Head, and gave Violin Master classes in Leningrad's Artist Union. He joined the Society for Jewish Folk Music in 1911. In 1922 established a publishing company called "Jibneh" in Berlin. Traveled to Palestine in 1924, staying only a few months. In 1925, Achron emigrated to the U.S. and settled in New York. Worked for a short time rearranging Yiddish theater music for Maurice Schwartz. Taught violin at the Westchester Conservatory. In 1934, he moved to Hollywood, composing film music. As Albert Weisser points out in his landmark work The Modern Renaissance of Jewish Music , Joseph Achron in the United States was between two worlds: his Jewish compositions were generally too sophisticated for Jewish audiences of the day, and his Jewish ethnic music not of interest for general classical audiences that understood modern music. Weisser states: "Since his death his reputation has fallen into somwhat of an eclipse; however it is just about due for a revival." Some 50 years after Weisser wrote those words, Achron's revivial seems to be finally happening. The pianist Jascha Nemtsov has taken up the charge and produced some brilliant recordings of his works. As example:
