Brahms Boosters Hilary Hahn and Garrick Ohlsson soared on three Brahms sonatas at Villa Montalvo By Scott MacClelland V IOLINIST HILARY HAHN, at age 20 already a risen star, made her South Bay debut before 250 patrons Sunday night at Villa Montalvo. That left about 50 empty seats in the Carriage House Theatre, where Hahn and veteran pianist Garrick Ohlsson teamed for the three Brahms violin sonatas. If you weren't there, you can go ahead and kick yourself. This was a recording-quality performance. Since a recording is in the works, microphones might as well have hung here. Virtually flawless playing by both and a penetrating interpretation of the composer's distinctive style put this collaboration up there with the best of them. Even though Hahn had the sheet music out, she never actually looked at it. But then wisdom has marked Hahn's career from the beginning: witness the acclaim and awards she has collected (including the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant at age 15!) and the readily available CD recordings she has made for Sony. Describing Hahn's playing is easy. There were no errors. Every note was perfectly on pitch, although oneonly onelanded just under its true center. However, such left-hand perfection, while rare enough, doesn't really take account of vibrato, which, by definition, moves to either side of pitch center and functions at the service of expressiveness. In this realm, Hahn possesses a remarkable variety. To melt emotions, she favors a technique that pulls vibrato from the strings. To underscore moments of virtuosity she pushes it. Her right hand wields an artist's brush, painting tone colors across the palette of her 1863 Villaume.

I first heard Hilary Hahn live, in a performance with the Cleveland Orchestra of the Mozart third violin concerto. As a rule, I'm not a huge fan of the Mozart violin concerti, and I've always preferred the "Turkish" fifth. However, Hahn and the Cleveland made a believer of me. Hahn invested her line with the subtlety of a great singer, and the orchestra followed her with the sensitivity of a Gerald Moore. It was one of the finest Mozart performances I've ever heard. Forget Mozart, it was one of the finest performances I've ever heard. Intermission, and I rushed to the lobby, to buy two CDs from the violinist herself (she signed them). So now you know me for the gushing fan I've tried to hide from you. Right now, Hilary Hahn is as good or better than violinists two and three times her age, both as a violinist and as a musician. My only doubt attaches to her range. I've not heard her in the big Romantic works. Although I note a Brahms concerto recording, everything I've listened to has been small-scale Mozart, Beethoven, Barber, Bernstein, and Bach. Within that, however, she is right now a master, and the thought that she will probably improve unnerves me a little. All her virtues spring to light from the first notes on this disc: intonation not only dead-on, but actively contributing to the beauty and excitement of the music; double-stops as if they're no big deal; a gorgeous singing tone. In addition to the technique, she is - no other word for it - musical, in a fundamental way that goes beyond intellect and analysis. Maybe someone did teach her this, but it sounds absolutely spontaneous, as if she decides at the last possible instant where the music goes next, while at the same time, holding in her head the larger vision of a movement's architecture.

That's what a 4-year-old Hahn heard when she saw a sign offering "music lessons for 4-year-olds" while on a walk around her Baltimore neighborhood with her dad. She decided to check it out. Though Hahn cites musical greats like her former mentor, Jascha Brodsky, as her greatest inspirations, that little boy playing "Twinkle, Twinkle" in that small building in Baltimore was probably her first influence. Hahn, now a world-renowned violinist, will perform tonight in UCLA's Schoenberg Hall, in just one stop on her international tour. Though Hahn began her musical career with "Twinkle, Twinkle," she moved on to bigger and better things. At tonight's concert, she will perform Brahm's Sonatas 1 and 2, Bach's Solo Sonata No. 2 and Debussy's Sonata, accompanied by pianist Natalie Zhu. The UCLA show is Hahn's debut solo performance in Los Angeles, although she has performed in countless cities around the world. April 2003 HOORAY FOR HILARY by Jim Svejda For her latest concerto album, violinist Hilary Hahn has continued the process begun on her first three concerto CDs, combining works that apparently have very little in common: in this case, the Mendelssohn E Minor Concerto and the First Violin Concerto of Dmitri Shostakovich. As with the Beethoven/Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber/Edgar Meyer and Brahms/Stravinsky albums, whatever pairing the Mendelssohn and Shostakovich might say about the pieces themselves - beyond the obvious fact that they are so irreconcilably different - it says much, much less than the performances do about the most thrilling violinist of her generation. Still in her early 20s, Hahn has already been compared to some of the great names in the history of the instrument, from Kreisler and Huberman, with whom she shares an endearing natural warmth and fondness for musical brinkmanship, to Perlman and even Heifetz, so seamless and spellbinding is her phenomenal technique. Yet for all the musical depth and technical finish of these performances, it is the illusion of complete effortlessness that makes them so disturbing and exciting. It is as if what the album is really intended to say is that for this player the technical horrors of the Shostakovich are no more daunting than the pops concert filigree of the Mendelssohn.

After hearing violinist Hilary Hahn last night at Sunset Center in Carmel, I know how he must have felt. The occasion was the Carmel Music Society's second concert of the season, and during this concert Ms. Hahn appeared with collaborative pianist Natalie Zhu. Only nineteen years old, Ms. Hahn has it all. We heard glorious soaring tone, with the most exquisite control of intonation and vibrato, plus we heard a mature musicianship (incredible for one so young) capable of the subtlest dynamics and shaping of phrases. This is not playing you are likely to forget. The program consisted of four sonatas - two by Brahms, one by Debussy and the Bach unaccompanied Sonata in A Minor. I was most looking forward to hearing the Brahms and Debussy sonatas, rather than the Bach, because in many violinists' hands, the unaccompanied suites and sonatas can sound like labored, academic exercises. Ms. Hahn's Bach Sonata was a startling revelation. Every phrase, every note, every nuance was there with an astounding clarity. The mechanics of playing the violin receded into the background, as she effortlessly navigated her way through the most difficult contrapuntal and double-stop passages. The most interesting aspect of her Bach playing was that although she made this extremely difficult work look and sound easy, her playing was never glib. We got the impression she was completely committed to the music and this gave her playing an air of extraordinary authority. It is difficult to image a better performance of this work, and I never wanted it to end.
