Pittsburgh Symphony PSO opens season with street party New faces in the PSO Hilary's 'Hahn-line' journal She doesn't say it in such a cheesy way she is 20 years old after all but the American violin virtuoso is doing her part and then some to help right the good ship classical. In a keynote address she gave this summer at the annual conference of the American Symphony Orchestra League in Boston, Hahn tactfully urged her fellow musicians to work harder to connect with audiences and offered tangible ways to do so. She advocated that artists look at "music television, the Internet, direct contact with audiences and programs for kids," while also maintaining they not be "reluctant to talk with the media." "To me, all of these activities on the part of artists are connected to the goal of breaking down barriers that keep people from coming to classical concerts," she said. "This isn't a matter of self-interest or egomania it's an effort to help with classical outreach." Hahn hasn't changed her tune since that conference "I think that there's a lot that [artists] can do that isn't too energy-consuming that would make a big difference," Hahn says over the phone. She'll put that theory into practice again this weekend when she performs in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's season-opening concert with music director Mariss Jansons. She'll play Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto in a concert that also includes Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Ottorino Respighi's "Feste romane."

HH GP : Did you listen to the recordings of violinists from earlier eras as part of your violin study? HH GP : Are there any particular 20th-century violinists who have influenced you or whose playing you greatly admire? HH : I was surely most influenced by my two teachers Klara Berkovich in Baltimore, from age five to ten, and Jascha Brodsky in Philadelphia, from age ten to 17. Both were very demanding teachers, but very kind, superb violinists: musicians of style and taste who allowed no technical shortcuts. I was extremely lucky to grow up under their guidance. GP : Is there anyone who should have been included in the film who wasn't? HH GP : How should the archival material featured in the film be viewed, and what is its value to young artists? HH : It gives young players and old ones, for that matter an opportunity to see that they are part of a long and very rich tradition of violinists, each of whom played differently, each of whom played effectively. And for those who are studious, it is a great resource for studying the technique of playing the violin. Nearly every school, every body type, every possible manner of holding the violin and bow is represented. She began playing the violin one month before her fourth birthday, in the children's program of the Peabody Conservatory. From age five to ten, she studied in Baltimore with Klara Berkovich, a native of Odessa, who taught for 25 years at the Leningrad School for the Musically Gifted. MUSIC REVIEW VIOLINIST HILARY HAHN, with pianist Natalie Zhu COMPOSERS: Brahms, Bach, Mozart and Saint-Saens WHEN: Monday night WHERE: Benaroya Hall She has been talked about, as an immensely gifted violinist, since she was in her midteens, and already has played on a good share of the world's important stages. For once, Seattle has not had to wait to hear this kind of musician in the early stage of a career. Thanks to the enterprising and alert Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Hahn made her local debut more than two years ago and returned to appear with the orchestra this past spring. On Monday night at Benaroya Hall, Hahn made her recital debut, opening the symphony's Distinguished Artists Series. She proved she was adept on stage with only a pianist an excellent pianist at that, Natalie Zhu as she is with an orchestra. Hahn spoke from the New York office of Universal Classics, the label with which she had just signed. Hahn was running a good half hour behind schedule when we began our conversation. Twenty minutes later, she had to leave to attend a Tower Records signing. Given how little time was available to us, I’m amazed at how much she was able to share. What strikes me most as I replay the tape of our conversation is the simplicity with which this gifted 23-year old artist discussed the mysteries of artistic creation. Hahn had no need of airs or phony sophistication. I am what I am, she suggested by her voice and the innocence of her replies. Readers who have heard the artist’s Sony debut recording of Bach Sonatas and Partitas, her Barber/Meyer disc, or her Grammy-winning CD of Brahms and Stravinsky Violin Concertos know that she is capable of music making of the highest order. This impression was further confirmed when I heard Hilary play Bach, Bloch, and Mozart live on February 8, 2004. The solo Bach Partita No. 2 performance was extraordinary, not only for its unquestionable technical proficiency but moreso for its intellectual and emotional coherence. Zhu proved a more than able partner in the Mozart and Bloch, exhibiting equal degrees of care and nuance.
