W. A. Mozart Musicalische Gesellschaft Guide to Chamber Music , Melvin Berger provides a succinct summary of Haydn’s approach to quartet writing as found in the Apponyi Quartets. "The quartets have attention getting introductions, considered necessary for the larger and less sophisticated public audiences. The part writing is more brilliant and demanding than before, and the melodies are catchier and easier to recall. The tempos are exaggerated (faster fast movements, slower slow movements): many intimate details are replaced by grand gestures; and there is a general intensification of all aspects, particularly of the emotional content of the music. Evidence of the stronger feelings and greater expressivity in these compositions led scholar Karl Geiringer to comment "the dawn of Romanticism is noticeable in the String Quartets of Op.74". The G minor quartet gets its nickname (The Rider) The Rider as we are carried off by this four-voiced steed from minor to major.

Gold, Cheadle To Appear At School Benefit
One of the Canyon Charter Elementary School's leading alumni, violinist Joseph Gold, will perform at a benefit concert for the school's music program on Sunday, March 18.
Described by the late San Francisco Chronicle columnist as "a giant on earth," Southern California native Gold attended Canyon School in Santa Monica Canyon as a young boy, went on to the University of Southern California and was coached by the great Jascha Heifetz.
Hosting the benefit will be acclaimed actor Don Cheadle, most recently seen in "Traffic" and "Family Man." Voiceover actor Hector Herrera will also appear, reading bi-lingual translations of the Spanish tale, "Ferdinand the Bull" and an assortment of Spanish poetry. Spanish Guitarist Jaime Torrent, making his first U.S. appearance, will accompany Gold.
Proceeds will help to fund the instrumental music program at Canyon Charter School, one of the oldest schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The benefit is scheduled for Sunday, March 18, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., in Janes Hall at the Presbyterian Church of Pacific Palisades, 15821 Sunset Boulevard, Pacific Palisades. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and will be available at the door. Refreshments will be served.

JOSEPH SMITH LAMB Son of Abel Lamb and Almira Merrill Written by Harriet Jane Lamb Stradling
Some time after the organization of the Church, Brigham Young went on a mission to Canada, during the course of which he went down into New York State. While there he called at the home of the Lamb family. They were deeply impressed by his eloquence and sound doctrine and accepted the gospel after careful and prayerful investigation. In gratitude to the missionary, they named their next child Brigham Young Lamb. They had been members of the Church for three years when their sixth son and seventh child was born. He was named Joseph Smith Lamb in honor of the Prophet.
During his infancy the family moved to Missouri, only to be driven out in the expulsion of the Saints from that place. Little Joseph’s early years were spent in moving from place to place with his parents as they heeded the call of the Church in those troubled times. They were privileged to have the Prophet and his brother, Hyrum, visit their home. They were witnesses to the building up of Nauvoo the Beautiful, from which they were driven by mobs. Joseph was seven years old when the family arrived in Salt Lake City. At first they lived in the Eighth Ward, and he helped his father in the cooper shop, learning the trade in his youth. Being gifted musically, he learned to play the violin very well. In fact, Brigham Young once said that Joseph Lamb was his favorite dance fiddler.

About Us Our Season Tickets Past Artists ... Home Past Artists Established in 1892 as the Tuesday Morning Musical Club, Tuesday Musical's first concerts were held in local homes and the Fontenelle Hotel ballroom. After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha. Here is a partial list of artists who have been part of this pioneer endeavor:
Charles Wakefield Cadman, pianist
Paul Kennedy Harper
Max Landow, pianist
Eugene Ysaye, violinist
Raphael Navas, pianist
Harold Bauer, pianist
Louise Homer, contralto

Front Page Concert Review of Rapf Concerto Festival Review World News The 1999-2000 Tour Biography Acclaim Links Calendar Family spins musical gold in Austria Review reprinted with permission Concert violinist Joseph Gold of Piedmont knows how to plan a family activity. As musical director of a four-week music festival in Austria last month, he invited the other two members of the family string ensemble 18-year-old son Raphael and wife Debbie Dare to join him on the program of internationally resound music talent. . . "It was politics, essentially, that got me the gig," Joseph said chuckling at the fortuitous coincidence that brought him to Schloss Matzen. Just as Joseph was beginning his portion of the concert and lecture event at Lobkowitz Palace in Vienna earlier this year, a non-violent political demonstration broke out. "And he wasn't just playing in any room of the Palace. It was the Eroica room with Beethoven premiered his third Symphony," clarified Debbie, noting the historical significance of the setting. "After (the demonstration) ended, I said to everyone: 'you've seen political fireworks now you'll hear musical fireworks' in my horrendous German," Joseph recalled.
