THE COWBOY FIDDLE OF BUS BOYK GROOVE THEORY
"Wow! What a knockout of a piece! So imaginative and perfectly executed. I enjoyed every delicious second." David Schiff, composer/music critic.
Concerto for Violin with Strings, Harpsichord, and Percussion by Hollis Taylor. The instrumentation is violin soloist, string orchestra of at least 5 first violins, 4 second violins, 3 violas, 2 celli, 1 bass, 1 harpsichord, and 1 percussion. Duration is approximately 25 minutes. String Theory is the current theory of everything, an all-encompassing explanation for our universe, which claims that all matter is composed of tiny vibrating strings. These strings are the smallest possible building blocks of reality. Groove Theory is my corollary theory of everything which claims that all music must swing and dance and pulse and groove. The four movements variously reflect the use of chromaticism and slides as connecting devices; employ figure/ground reversal with the soloist and orchestra (a riff on current physics which states that a wave is sometimes a wave and sometimes a particle); and draw on techniques such as counterpoint (including retrograde, inversions, etc.), symmetrical sections and scales, and strange loops which return to an original key or motif.

WORLD SERVICE
BBC World Service marks its HIV/Aids Season with a special concert of music, poetry and drama A star-studded line-up of musicians and writers join the internationally renowned actor Sir Ian McKellen for the BBC World Service HIV/Aids Concert broadcast to a global radio audience this Saturday, 22 November. The concert, hosted by Sir Ian McKellen, is from the Mermaid Theatre in London. Sir Ian McKellen is joined on stage by the African broadcaster Ofeibea Quist-Arcton who interviews the artists and uncovers some revealing insights into their personal views of HIV/Aids. She says she talks to teenagers regularly about HIV/Aids and is told by many that girls who carry protection are often stigmatised as bad girls with many boyfriends. "I tell them it is better being a bad girl who is changing boyfriends than have Aids," she says.

The Music Conservatory at Chicago College of Performing Arts provides professional training and education within the context of a vibrant university in a world-class city. It is a place where musical genres from classical to jazz are valued, where the energies of one discipline spill over to enliven other artistic endeavors, where preparing to be a teacher is as important as preparing to be a performer or scholar, and where students come to enhance their unique talents and polish them to perfection. Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University is well situated on the top floors of the historic landmark Auditorium Building, designed by world-famous architects Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan. The building includes the 4,200 seat Auditorium Theatre, renowned for its beauty and exquisite acoustics. Located on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway, this edifice is now an integral part of the "educational corridor" of more than 37,000 students enrolled in various institutions in the famous downtown Loop. Across the street are the flower gardens of Grant Park, the magnificent Buckingham Fountain, and the sparkling beauty of Lake Michigan. Within walking distance are many of the city's major cultural institutions, including Symphony Center, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; the Lyric Opera; the Jazz Showcase; the Goodman, Chicago, Oriental, and Cadillac theaters; the Art Institute; the Field Museum of Natural History; and the "Magnificent Mile" of shops and galleries. This ideal location provides opportunities for learning from some of the most accomplished musicians in the world, from principals in the Chicago Symphony to Grammy-nominated jazz artists.
