The Columbus Dispatch One of the most inspiring and dynamic artists before the public today, violinist Vadim Gluzman has established himself as a performer of great depth, virtuosity and technical brilliance. Lauded by both critics and audiences, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia and Canada as a soloist and in a duo setting with his wife, pianist Angela Yoffe.
In 1990, 16-year-old Vadim Gluzman was granted five minutes to play for the late Isaac Stern. From that meeting, a friendship was born. Mr. Stern was a great influence on Vadim Gluzman both as a musician and human being and he had the privilege of working with Stern in Israel and the United States. In 1994, Mr. Gluzman was named recipient of the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award. He now plays the extraordinary 1690 ex-Leopold Auer Stradivarius on extended loan to him through the generosity of the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

"I'll give you five minutes," said Isaac Stern when the 16-year-old Vadim Gluzman came to play for the great violinist in Jerusalem in 1991. Not only did Mr. Stern wind up giving him a lot more than five minutes, but a year later, through his recommendation the America-Israel Cultural Foundation loaned Mr. Gluzman the Pietro Guarneri violin. Since then, Mr. Gluzman was named recipient of the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation 1994 Career Award. In 1996, he became the owner of a bow from the Szeryng collection.
Vadim Gluzman, who has recorded for radio and television, ranks among the few first class artists of his generation and is rapidly gaining recognition throughout the world. He has performed in Europe, Russia, Japan, the United States and in Canada as a soloist, chamber musician, and in a duo setting with his wife, pianist Angela Yoffe.
His appearances as a soloist have included performances with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony at Orchestra Hall, the Houston Symphony, Boston Pops, the Flint Symphony, English String Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic, the Winterthur Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Salzburg Kammerphilharmonie, and the Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra. He has played under the batons of conductors James DePreist, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, John Nelson, Keith Lockhart, Robert Bernhardt, Arnold Katz, Salvador Mas Conde, Philippe Bender, Hubert Soudant, Mendi Rodan, and Uri Segal.
Mr. Gluzman’s 1998 summer was highlighted with performances at various festivals, including Lincoln Center Festival, Divonne (France), Schwetzingen (Germany) and Lockenhaus (Austria), as well as a recital debut in Berlin. Mr. Gluzman’s exciting 1998-99 season begins with his debuts with the Seattle and Utah Symphonies. With a European career that continues to flourish, Mr. Gluzman will make his debuts in Vienna with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. He also continues to receive invitations from major European orchestras: Saarbruchen Radio, NDR Hannover and a re-appearance with the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra. In September of 1999, he will return to Japan to perform with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and to tour with recital performances. His other engagements include recitals in New York, Chicago, Boston, Germany, and Spain.

Tzigane Rhapsodie de Concert is a dazzling display piece that encompasses double stops, harmonics, pizzicatos, glissandos, and all the technical challenges of Paganini's twenty four Violin Caprices, plus a few more. This score has long been a specialty of Russian violinists. On 4 April 2004 at the University of Miami Gusman Concert Hall, the Ukrainian violinist Vadim Gluzman delivered a brilliantly virtuosic account of this French Magyar display piece the climax of a dynamic recital for the Sunday Afternoons of Music series. 2 Lawrence Budmen GYPSY FIRE The rich, dark sound of Gluzman's violin (a 1609 Stradivarius once owned by the legendary Russian violinist and teacher Leopold Auer) conjured up the world of Tchaikovsky and the Russian violinistic tradition. Gluzman is the contemporary embodiment of that great Russian school of violin virtuosos that runs from Misha Elman and Jascha Heifetz through Gluzman's contemporaries Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. His blistering performance of Ravel's showpiece received a standing, cheering ovation. And what a performance! (While Tzigane is a Frenchman's impression of Gypsy fiddlers, it remains the work of a master craftsman. Mastery was what Gluzman's rendition was all about.) Gluzman's technique is a given his virtuosity is awesome! His violin ignited a Gypsy flame beneath the music. Gluzman did not give a dutiful performance of the notes. His Tzigane glowed with the inner fire of creative inspiration. Violinist and music became one a transcendent artistic moment! (As an encore, Gluzman offered Fritz Kreisler's more refined Viennese version of Gypsy music La Gitana . Gluzman played this bon-bon with flair and style. Sentiment without bathos exactly the way Kreisler himself played this music.)

The Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman has established himself as a performer of great depth, virtuosity and technical brilliance. Lauded by critics and audiences alike, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia and Canada, as a soloist and in a duo partnership with his wife, the pianist Angela Yoffe. In recent seasons Vadim Gluzman appeared with Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston and Seattle Symphony Orchestras, Minnesota Orchestra, Munich and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and KBS Symphony Orchestra among others. Born in 1973 in the Ukraine, Vadim Gluzman began studying the violin at the age of seven. Before moving to Israel in 1990, he studied under Zakhar Bron and later under Yair Kless in Tel Aviv. He has also studied in the United States under Arkady Fomin and at the Juilliard School under the late Dorothy DeLay and Masao Kawasaki. In the season 2003/2004 Vadim Gluzman championed the realization of "Préludes CV", a ballett production celebrating the 30th anniversary of John Neumeier at the Hamburg Ballett to music by the young Russian composer Lera Auerbach, originally written for Vadim Gluzman and Angela Yoffe. In 1998 he had already been the violin soloist in the ballet "Bernstein Dances" and had appeared with the Ballett in Hamburg and in New York’s Lincoln Center. Other highlights this season include the Mendelssohn concert with the Dresden Philharmonic under Marek Janowski in December 2003 and a Prokofieff Cycle with the Real Orquestra Sinfónica de Sevilla under Alain Lombard in May and June 2004.

Some "fiddling." The renowned duo of violinist Vadim Gluzman and pianist Angela Yoffe presented a spellbinding, two-hour concert of works old and new, moving and whimsical Wednesday night before a near-capacity audience in the Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College. More than half of the audience members were students of the festival’s Conservatory Young Artists program, who will, I suspect, not soon forget the musical pyrotechnics of the evening. Indeed, prior to the program, Arkady Fomin, the artistic director, told the youths that the festival Conservatory was unique for a community of Durango’s size and that the musical faculty was first-rate. Gluzman and Yoffe are, of course, faculty members. The duo then began a spirited performance of Brahm’s "Sonata No. 1 in G." Romantic and often passionate, the three-movement work moved the musicians to a lofty level of emotional, yet disciplined presentation. Playing with closed eyes, swaying back and forth, Gluzman exhibited a near-flawless technical mastery. Yoffe was equally energetic and inspired. Her keyboard work was remarkably physical and confident.
