April 1997 Dear Members and Friends: The weeks have passed quickly since our last newsletter. As I write in late March, winter said goodbye with a fistful of snow last week and today it seems that we can forget spring and prepare for summer - all because of El Ninjo! In February, board member Andrea Traubner organized the first in what we project as a series of programs highlighting the work of film experts from foreign countries. Thanks to the efforts of board member William Sloan , we were able to screen in the Titus 2 Theater at The Museum of Modern Art. Lily Talapessy, Film Officer at the Consulate General of the Netherlands introduced us to the contemporary film scene in Holland. The Winners afforded us a moving and engaging view of what goes on behind the scenes at the Queen Elisabeth Competition for classical music in Brussels the euphoria of winning the coveted prize, the heartbreak of not making it quite to the top, and the relationships that develop between the contestants. Filmmakers Paul Cohen and David van Tijn focussed their attention on four winners and their subsequent, not always brilliant, careers. The fate of Philipp Hirschhorn stands out. A dazzling violinist, viewed by some as a second Paganini, he appears in front of the camera as a broken shell, marked by illness and full of bitterness and rueful memories. The joyfully elegant short Glas by well-known Dutch documentary filmmaker Bert Haanstra, who died last year, broke the somber mood and gave us a wonderful example of how a gifted filmmaker can make an industrial on glass into a work of art. The perfectly balanced interaction of images and jazz was a joy to watch. The screening was followed by an informal get-together at a nearby restaurant.

A Venetian Violinist : Luigi Enrico Ferro and the Vivaldi Renaissance Venice is a city that enchantes every visitor by its magic and charm. Everything in this city is linked to the past with a such continuity that we feel still in life events of the far times.
Musical life during the first half of this century has been in this city, where I am fortunately living ,very important and influenced the international musical panorama of the period more than we today remember.
The violinist that more properly rappresents the Venice of this period is Luigi Enrico Ferro. He born on Murano in 1903 , the small island near Venice famous for the art - glass productions. The father was owner of one of the most important glass factory of the island, but avowing the son' s musical turn, starts him to violin school at Conservatorio of Venice " Benedetto Marcello ". On 1917, for reason dued to the first world war, Ferro leaves Venice for Milano where continues the violin study with the famous Teresina Tua ( pupil of Massart ). She understand the potentiality of the boy .Coming back in the same years to Venice, thanks to the help of Mrs. Tua , Ferro continues to study with Francesco de Guarnieri , (1867 - 1931) important violinist (pupil also of Cèsar Frank at Paris for composition studies) pupil in his turn of Raffaello Frontali ( 1849 - 1916 ),appreciated violinist in his tours with Liszt ,friend of Verdi and Wagner.
On this regard it is interesting to remark how all the famous italian violinists of the past ages have been linked inside the different italian violin schools in an unbroken chain (teacher-pupil-teacher ) that goes on in the past till Veracini , Corelli and the most important violinists of 18 th. century. Like for luthiers, also for violinists the tradition of playing has been handed down from generation to generation maintening the taste for the italian style also with the differences of the various schools an the personal contribute of the violinists.

Home January 2000 January 1999 January 1998 ... December 1997 FERDINAND RIES NICOLAI TCHEREPNIN (1873-1945): Narcisse et Echo, Op. 40. The follow-up to 1909's Le pavillon d'Armide, Narcisse et Echo was also premiered (in 1911) by the Diaghilev Ballet Company. Karsavina and Nizhinsky danced the leads but the ballet was criticized for being "static". Regardless of the dramatic movement, Tcherepnin's score is a masterful and atmospheric work, showing a mastery of magical orchestration (the composer was a Rimsky-Korsakov student) and opulent tone-colors which suggest Lyadov and Debussy. A wordless chorus is used to represent Echo - a touch used again (remembered) later by Ravel in Daphnis et Chloë. A valuable addition to our knowledge of ballet scores of the turn of the century. Hague Chamber Choir; Residentie Orchestra The Hague; Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Chandos 9670 (England) PHILIP SAINTON (1891-1967): Moby Dick. Unusually for a film composer, Sainton was allowed by director John Huston to spend time on location with the film crew to work out timings, sketch musical ideas and make notes. The result was one of the most thrilling, remarkable and unjustly neglected scores in film music: a gorgeous and shimmering rhapsody of the sea. The 18 pages of notes and stills from the film also include a foreword by Ray Bradbury (who wrote the screenplay). Moscow Symphony Orchestra; William T. Stromberg. Marco Polo 8.225050 (New Zealand) ERNST VON DOHNANYI (1877-1960): Symphony No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 9, American Rhapsody, Op. 47. Dohnanyi's youthful first symphony (1900) has its second recording less than six months after its first and Bamert's reading is broader and more intense than Botstein's on Telarc. The 1953 rhapsody opens with hints of The Star-Spangled Banner and has sequences of African- and Native American style melodies before closing with an Irish-style jig. Bamert plays it for all it's worth. BBC Philharmonic; Matthias Bamert. Chandos 9647 (England)

You said I should be happy
You said I should be me

ALCATRAZ Vampire State Building (Long Hair) cd

No, not the '80s metal band, featuring Yngwie that Alcatrazz had two zz's in their name. This Alcatraz was a krautrock outfit from Hamburg, who released this album, their debut, in 1972. At last it gets a cd reissue we've always been curious about 'em 'cause the striking/silly LP cover painting (the lips and teeth of a vampire, with the bloody fangs being two inverted Empire State Buildings) always shows up in books of krautrock lore like Cosmic Dreams At Play and The Crack In The Cosmic Egg. AND, they're one of those Nurse With Wound list bands too! In fact, Nurse With Wound and Stereolab 'covered' this album's brilliant lead-off track "Simple Headphone Mind" on a collaborative ep some years back.
Alcatraz prove to be one of those wildly jamming, kinda-heavy bands, with some bluesy Zeppelin-esque riffing and powerful, fuzz-psych lead guitar (love that tone!) cutting through their fusionoid, jazzily-rockin' songs, which also feature sax, flute, piano, drums, bongos, and (on two tracks only) vocals. Reminds us of some way-out Traffic or Santana type of thing. Really, the mostly instrumental songs on here don't really sound like 'songs', just a lot of improv parts and crazy playing, which is of course cool by us. It totally makes sense that they started out playing covers of stuff by the likes of Savoy Brown, Vanilla Fudge, Black Sabbath, and Uriah Heep before getting into Soft Machine and Tony William's Lifetime the liner notes mention 'em blending Cannonball Adderly and Deep Purple!
