    KRILOFF (OR KRUILOV), IVAN ANDREEVICH
KREUZBURGKRILOFF famous as a violinist, playing with great success at various continental capitals. It was to him that in 1803 Beethoven dedicated his famous violin sonata (op. 47) known as the " Kreutzer." Apart, however, from his fame as a violinist, Kreutzer was also a prolific composer; he wrote twenty-nine operas, many of which were successfully produced, besides nineteen violin concertos and chamber music. He died at Geneva in 1831. KREUZBURG, a town of Germany, in the Prussian province of Silesia, on the Stober, 24 m. N.N.E. of Oppeln. Pop. (1905), 10,919. It has an Evangelical and a Roman Catholic church, a gymnasium and a teacher's seminary. Here are flour-mills, distilleries, iron-works, breweries, and manufactories of sugar and of machinery. Kreuzburg, which became a town in 1252, was the birthplace of the novelist Gustav Freytag. KREUZNACH (CREUZNACH), a town and watering-place of Germany, in the Prussian Rhine province, situated on the Nahe, a tributary of the Rhine, 9 m. by rail S. of Bingerbruck. Pop. (1900), 21,321. It consists of the old town on the right bank of the river, the new town on the left, and the Bade Insel (bath island), connected by a fine stone bridge. The town has two Evangelical and three Roman Catholic churches, a gymnasium, a commercial school and a hospital. There is a collection of Roman and medieval antiquities, among which is preserved a fine Roman mosaic discovered in 1893. On the Bade Insel is the Kurhaus (1872) and also the chief spring, the Elisabeth-quelle, impregnated with iodine and bromine, and prescribed for scrofulous, bronchial and rheumatic disorders. The chief industries are marble-polishing and the manufacture of leather, glass and tobacco. Vines are cultivated on the neighboring hills, and there is a trade in wine and corn.

Belmont Camerata Musicale featured in Sunday paper
Tennessean arts writer Alan Bostick profiles a performance by the Belmont Camerata Muscale in this piece that ran Sunday. When it comes to the Belmont Camerata Musicale, there are a few things fans of the group know they can count on. First of all, they're aware that artistic director and violinist Elisabeth Small will fashion a challenging, imaginative program that steers clear of the ordinary. Second, the players, typically Belmont faculty members and their guests, will offer a committed, practiced reading. And third, the setting, usually the elegant confines of Belmont Mansion, will only add to the experience. Small and the Camerata are back in action tomorrow night, and the only thing that's different this time is the venue. The one deviation from the winning formula is that tomorrow's concert will take place not in the mansion but in the adjacent Massey Auditorium, deemed more appropriate for this particular program. Why?

Piotr Anderszewski, piano Virgin Classics 7 24354 55262 5 Performance Sonics Listening to the first notes of Piotr Anderszewski’s new recording of Bach’s lovely Partita No.1, one senses a special artist at work. There’s a softness to his touch, a gentleness bordering on reticence, which makes the beauty of the opening Praeludium linger in the mind even as the music moves forward to the jaunty pace of the subsequent Allemande. Keyboard artist Piotr Anderszewski launched his international career at the age of 22 when he performed Beethoven’s immensely challenging Diabelli Variations in London’s Wigmore Hall in 1991. A slew of lauded international appearances and recordings followed, culminating in Anderszewski’s receipt of the 2002 Gilmore Artist Award. The Gilmore Artist Award (billed as “most generous” financial award granted in the musical arts) is only presented to exceptional pianists who possess broad and profound musicianship and charisma, desire and can sustain a major international concert career, and are considered capable of making “a real impact on music.” In acknowledgment for his many performances throughout the UK, Piotr Anderszewski has been honored with the 1991 Royal Philharmonic Society’s "Best Instrumentalist" Award. (Previous winners of this prize include such extraordinary artists as Murray Perahia, Itzhak Perlman, and Andras Schiff). Anderszewski has also been awarded the prestigious Szymanowski Prize for his interpretation of that composer’s music, and has received support from the Miami-based Patrons for Exceptional Artists Foundation.

The town subsequently developed trade and manufacturing, established a middle class and acquired its own administration. Around 1100, a protective rampart was built around the town. At the death of Duke John III, Count of Flanders, Louis de Male, taking advantage of the situation, took possession of Brussels. But, two months later, Everard t'Serclaes succeeded in driving the Flemish from the town and further ramparts were built to protect the city-dwellers. The arrival of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1430, brought economic prosperity. Twenty years later, Brussels was considered the capital of the kingdom of Burgundy and became, under Charles V, the capital of the Low Countries. The death of his successor, Philip II of Spain who left no succession, brought with it numerous conflicts. In 1695, the troops of Louis XIV destroyed much of Brussels. The town finally came under Austrian domination until the French revolution.

The culture of classical music today
by Samuel Lipman L PBS broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera are seen by millions of viewers in the United States, and now by millions abroad on their own government-run TV channels. Furthermore, the Met now has ambitious plans for gala pay-per-view television broadcasts, from which it is hoped that the company will draw large revenues. Even in the trend-conscious academy, the study of great music, not just as notes and sounds but as ideas and influences, has become the rage in all the most prestigious schools. And then there is the pervasion of classical music as an integral part of the ambiance of our daily lives. What used to be derogated as elevator music has become classical elevator music; no visit to a pricey restaurant is complete without a sonic background of the Four Seasons of Vivaldi or any of several particularly familiar piano concertos of Mozart. Bach turns up frequently in television commercials, and has even been known to provide an accompaniment to scoreboard displays on televised baseball games. What is true in restaurants, TV commercials, and baseball games is equally true in department and specialty stores, and all manner of business offices. In recounting all the good news, it would hardly be fair to omit the fact that over the past two decades even large American corporations have flocked to supporting orchestras and opera companies, and have in many cases taken great pride in associating their good corporate names with musical culture. In an even larger way, senior business executives have been, and are today, willing to sit on musical boards and contribute their economic expertise to the running of these cultural enterprises. In general, contributions to music, not just from business but from foundations and private sources, have been going up, and even the present recession has not noticeably reduced these gifts.

World Environment Day 99 World Environment Day 99 was a tremendous success, far exceeding our hopes and dreams. The theme for this year's World Environment Day ( Our Earth - Our Future - Just Save It! ) was an urgent appeal to each and every one of us to renew our pledge to cherish and respect the planet that sustains us. The events began with a welcome party hosted by new Laureate, Global Environmental Action of Japan. Their key role as an advocator of environmental protection and sustainable development in close collaboration with U.N. organizations as been an important force in deepening international dialogue and developing concrete global actions which would contribute to sustainable development. The Prince and Princess of Japan graced their conference, which ran simultaneously with World Environment Day. On June 4th, Mr. Goto of Yasuda Marine and Fire Insurance Company (a 1998 Laureate) funded and hosted a Global 500 Forum Luncheon and presentation. The Minister of the Environment, Mr. Manabe, Dr. Toepher, Executive Director of UNEP, new Laureates, and numerous Japanese Laureates attended the event from 1987 - 1998. It was a joyful reunion for Marilyn Mosley and Global 500 Forum Advisor Partha Sarathay, who has served continuously on the Forum as a counselor for India, President, and advisor. Mr. Goto and his 110 person technical team worked with Forum President Marilyn Mosley to develop a presentation that included a dramatic display of our website. The World Environment Day Ceremony attended by Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, was a very memorable occasion. The beauty of Japanese simplicity was evident with an exquisite slide presentation arranged to music of incredible natural beauty. The event culminated with the presentation of UNEP's Global 500 awards to 17 individuals and organizations from 12 countries, all of who have made outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment. We were all so proud of the Laureates as each stepped up to receive the award presented by Mr. Manabe and Mr. Toepher. The youth representative from Japan Junior Eco-Club, Ms. Mizuki Kunugihara, stood with much poise and delivered a lovely speech. The Laureates were honored to meet with their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress, who received the Laureates in private.
