"The most nearly perfect violinist of his time" The story of
    Nathan Milstein
    by Loke Hoe-Yeong
Nathan Milstein (1903 - 1992) was called the "prince of the violin" (and at one time, the "prince of the bow"). Harold Schonberg, in his obituary of Milstein published in The New York Times , wrote his famous line, "He could well have been the most nearly perfect violinist of his time". However, the name Milstein is rarely mentioned or known among the music-listening public. Which is a sad thing considering the esteem and admiration professional violinists and musicians alike then and now hold for him. But this problem can be easily explained; Milstein was a not "commercial" musician who could "sell". Rather, he was repelled by the demands of celebrity and never indulged much in publicity. The little-known fact is that Milstein's career is the longest ever in the history of violin playing - 72 years, from his official debut playing the Glazunov concerto with the composer conducting(!) in 1915, to his final concert in 1987 playing the Beethoven concerto with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf. Some time after his final concert, the violinist broke his arm, bring his career to an abrupt halt. A pity, considering that the healthy musician's career could have been ever longer!

I don't remember the details, but they have been published - probably in the STRAD magazine. Freidman was always reported to be bitter that the year he entered the Tchaikowsky competition they did not award a first place (and so he didn't get it.) Expressed the belief that it was political. throughout his career he was plagued by comments that he either imitated Heifetz (his teacher) or did not play like Heifetz. I read that he had been severely injured in an auto accident and lost the ability to play. I have since heard that he died (but I don't know). I also heard him in person once about 25 or 30 years ago doing the Brahms with a regional orchestra in central California.

Mondre Moffett, Steve Kirby and Delfeayo Marsalis (left to right) demonstrate their techniques in a master class at the Center for Jazz Studies during the International FAME Festival.
A divinity Mr. Moffett is not, though to those gifted few he spends time with each summer, his expertise feels like divine intervention. A renowned jazz trumpeter and former band leader at the famed Blue Note Club in New York City, Mr. Moffett dedicates two weeks of his life each year to provide guidance to the musically aspiring.
International FAME Festival concert series, featuring faculty and student concerts at the Lawrenceville School July 25-Aug. 7.
"I get letters all year from the week at camp," says Mr. Moffett, who lives in West Orange. "They write me with problems: 'I'm playing in the jazz band, I'm taking this solo and I think the key is B flat. I play this note and I think it's a blues structure — what should I do?' So, I write back, 'Well, think rhythmically.' It's gratifying when you feel like you're making a contribution and really helping." Donald Harrison is one of the many talented jazz musicians performing at the FAME Festival in Lawrenceville this week.
