28. Jascha Heifetz - The Violinist Of The Century, Classical Notes, Peter Gutmann

Even his harshest detractors had to admit that Jascha Heifetz (1900 - 1987) had the greatest technique in history (and the few recordings of his concerts prove that his precision wasn’t a studio fabrication). Even more amazing, his fabulous talent was fully formed by the time of his first teenaged records, cut weeks after his sensational 1917 Carnegie Hall debut. Just listen to how effortlessly he tosses off Bazzini’s fiendishly difficult "Ronde des Lutins" with breakneck speed, staggering technique and attitude galore. In art, as in politics, radical youths mellow in middle age and gravitate toward a more conservative middle ground, but not Heifetz. Rather than embrace mellow maturity, Heifetz maintained throughout his half-century career the fleet precision of his initial fame. Most artists dream in vain of fending off technical decline. Heifetz, though, faced the opposite problem. Many violin devotees accuse Heifetz of never evolving a distinctive personal vision. Indeed, it has become fashionable to flail Heifetz for an emotional reticence at odds with the heart-on-sleeve style we normally expect of our fiddlers. But instead of damning him for what he wasn't (and never pretended to be), it seems far better to hail him for seizing upon a unique personality and never straying. Throughout his career, Heifetz projected his sensational technique and pure tone with affirmative athletic confidence. Even in his last performances, he sounds like the most youthful violinist on record.

Prometheus Trio Makes Musical Move:
New Violinist Jeanyi Kim to Replace Samantha George; Second CD to be Released at April concerts
(April 7, 2003) The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music‘s esteemed Resident Faculty Ensemble, The Prometheus Trio, has announced a personnel change in the upcoming 2003-2004 season. Violinist Samantha George, who has been with the trio for three seasons, is enjoying an ever-increasing schedule of commitments, and will leave the trio at the end of the 2002-2003 season. “I’m really proud of my work with the trio, and the wonderful relationship I’ve had with the Conservatory,” she stated. Taking her place will be her stand partner at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Assistant Concertmaster Jeanyi Kim . "I was impressed by the Prometheus Trio’s skill as players, and the dedicated ‘following’ they had developed in such a short time" Ms. Kim said. "So I was really excited, surprised, and flattered when they invited me to become a member of such a great group." After "three wonderful seasons with Samantha," Prometheus Trio pianist Stefanie Jacob is enthusiastic about this new direction. "When Jeanyi came for a reading with us [Jacob and cellist Scott Tisdel] we immediately felt musically comfortable with her. We played together for a Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra fundraiser on March 9 and had a dynamite time, so Scott and I are delighted she agreed to join us."

Candace Bawcombe
Executive Director
Candace Bawcombe, pianist has gained critical acclaim for her chamber music collaborations with many of today's great young artists. The New York Times called her playing "strong, musical and deeply talented." She has the distinction of being the youngest student ever accepted in the studio of Mme. Lili Kraus at age eleven and continued her association with the artist through graduate school at Texas Christian University. Ms. Bawcombe has been active as a soloist, chamber musician and collaborative pianist for twenty years performing at venues such as Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, the Summergarden Series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the Dame Myra Hess Series on WFMT-FM in Chicago, the Aspen Music Festival, the Hoam Art Hall in Seoul and the International Summer Music Festival in Dallas at the invitation of violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman. She enjoyed collaborating with violinist Pinchas Zukerman and actress Barbra Streisand recording violin and piano repertoire for the film "The Prince of Tides" which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1992. In addition to recording with Mr. Zukerman, she has collaborated in recital in the United States and abroad with violinist Miriam Fried, Paul Zukofsky, the violinist of the Emerson String Quartet, Eugene Drucker, Peter Winograd, first violinist of the American String Quartet, Erick Friedman, Philadelphia Orchestra concert-master David Kim, Tchaikovsky prize winner, cellist Stephen Kates and Metropolitan Opera star Renee Fleming, to name just a few.
