Star-Bulletin
Tony Award-winning actress and singer Bernadette Peters and jazz legend Dave Brubeck head the list of pops artists who will perform with the Honolulu Symphony in the 1997-98 season. Peters, whose Broadway credits include leads in "Sunday in the Park with George," "Into the Woods" and "The Goodbye Girl," makes her Honolulu symphony debut Nov. 14-15 with Stuart Chafetz conducting. Brubeck performs "Take Five The Very Best of Dave Brubeck: Brubeck and Sons" Jan. 16-17. A major coup for the reorganized symphony will be its debut in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl, one of the nation's premier performance sites, on August 31. The concert will be conducted by Maestro Sam Wong and Aaron Mahi of the Royal Hawaiian Band. Also appearing with the Symphony will be Keali'i Reichel, slack-key guitarists George Kuo, and singers Dennis Kamakahi and Robi Kahakalau. The only other time the symphony has appeared on the mainland was a series of concerts in Utah and Nevada in 1979. The Halekulani Classical MasterWorks series at Blaisdell Concert Hall will be expanded from 10 concerts to 12 pairs of Sunday and Tuesday concerts. The MasterWorks series will include three new series entitled "Great Composers," "Legends of Asia" and "A Beethoven Festival." Call 538-8863 for information.

The Redwood Symphony held its annual "An Evening of Chamber Music," at the Canada College Theatre in Redwood City, on January 26, featuring members of the orchestra. The orchestra, itself, is remarkable in that it offers progams many cuts above the typical community symphonies. Founder and music director, Dr. Eric Kujawsky, as much a musicologist, ventures into musical landscapes where other community conductors fear to tread. The program alternated between the conventional and the rarely heard. It opened with an intriguing work, "Suite Francaise: d'apres Claude Gervaise," out of early in the last century by the French composer Francis Poulenc. Being principally self-taught, Poulenc appears to be far less influenced by the past in melodic and harmonic lines and even in scoring, so that his work is refreshing to the ears of jaded chamber music devotees. No conventional instrumentation for Poulenc: two each of oboes, bassoons and trumpets, three trombones, a harpsichord (of all things) and percussion. Unique! This was conducted by the orchestra's principal oboist, George Yefchak.

The Violin is 2nd only to the Violin....
Or So Some Say.......Others Say The Guarnerius is the most Prized Of All Violins HISTORY The violin emerged in Italy in the early 1500's and seems to have evolved from two medieval bowed instrumentsthe fiddle, also called vielle or fiedel, and the rebecand from the Renaissance lira da braccio [ a violin-like instrument with off-the-fingerboard drone strings ]. Also related, but not a direct ancester, is the viol, a fretted, six-string instrument that appeared in Europe before the violin and excisted side by side with it for about 200 years. The earliest important violin makers were the northern Italians Gasparo da Salo [1540-1609 ] and Giovanni Maggini [1579-c. 1630] from Brescia and Andrea Amati [c.1520-c. 1611] from Cremona. The craft of violin making reached unprecedented artistic heights in the 17th and early 18th centuries in the workshops of the Italians Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri , both from Cremona, and the Austrian Jacob Stainer. A family of violin makers in Cremona, Italy, in the 17th and 18th centuries, the

About Us Our Season Tickets Past Artists ... Home Past Artists Established in 1892 as the Tuesday Morning Musical Club, Tuesday Musical's first concerts were held in local homes and the Fontenelle Hotel ballroom. After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha.
