Arnhold Concert Highlights Quartet's Spirit of Exploration By ED KLORMAN
Around 10 o'clock on a Thurday morning, the Chiara String Quartet—currently in its first year as Juilliard's graduate quartet-in-residence—begins another busy day of rehearsing. As they unpack their instruments, cellist Gregory Beaver, a former computer science major, tells the others about some recent updates he has made to the quartet's Web site. "Did you see the color coding?" he asks, eagerly. The Chiara String Quartet members are (clockwise from upper left) violist Jonah Sirota, violinist Julie Yoon, cellist Gregory Beaver, and violinist Rebecca Fischer. (Photo by Peter Schaaf) After warming up on two Bach chorales, the group gets to work on the variations movement from Schumann's A-Major Quartet, Op. 41, No. 3. Their playing exudes an energy and sense of purpose that belies the morning rehearsal time. As the quartet stops to rehearse a few spots, it is obvious how compatible the members are. When violist Jonah Sirota suggests that they vary their approaches to cadences, violinist Rebecca Fischer immediately chimes in with several specific examples. Without a moment to spare, the quartet is playing again, putting these new ideas into practice. The Chiara String Quartet dates back to 1993, when Beaver and Fischer met as students at the Musicorda Summer String Program on the Mount Holyoke College campus in South Hadley, Mass. Beaver says, "I still remember the first reading together. We read the first movement of Schubert's 'Death and the Maiden.' I had been looking for a group that could play the piece for about two years. Our first read-through had a real, electric, musical connection."

Neemi Jarvi brings verve to Mahler's complex Seventh Symphony
by Lawrence B. Johnson, Detroit News Music Critic
January 26, 2002 Conductor Neeme Jarvi, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's own comeback kid, confirmed his return to health and form Thursday by tackling yet another formidably difficult and elusive work, Mahler's Seventh Symphony.
Just as he did with Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in November, in his first appearance with the DSO since suffering a stroke in July, Jarvi shaped a performance of Mahler's huge, often bizarre symphony that managed to illuminate the work without sacrificing its wildness or its ambiguity. The Seventh Symphony, which Mahler completed in 1908, bears comparison with Stravinsky's notoriously challenging Rite of Spring ballet of 1913. Perhaps it's the combination of Mahler's demonic syncopations and the work's crazy mood swings that has kept the Seventh from winning the public affection lavished on his other symphonies.
But the roaring ovation at Orchestra Hall attested to the magnetism of the Seventh in the right hands.

Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, with violinist JuliaFischer as the soloist; and Lukas Foss “Phorion.”

Pressestimmen: Saturday, March 15, 2003 San Francisco Chronicle Teen violinist shows pluck, polish Fischer blends well with Symphony Joshua Kosman, Chronicle Music Critic
It doesn't matter how many times you hear a teenage musician play with the kind of technical panache and interpretive grandeur of a seasoned adult. Deep down, you never quite get used to it. The latest display of prodigiously youthful artistry came Thursday afternoon from Julia Fischer, a 19–year–old German violinist who joined Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony in Davies Symphony Hall for a ravishing and vigorously direct account of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. This was her second Symphony appearance, following an acclaimed debut two years ago in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4. Among her manifold musical gifts – including a bright, lustrous string tone; easy, unforced technique; and an ability to sustain a melodic phrase over long stretches – what stands out most in Fischer's playing is its lack of fussiness or complication. Like Hilary Hahn, whom she resembles a little as a musician, Fischer has a knack for making a score sound direct and uncluttered but never simplistic. She gets right to the heart of the matter and lays it out for the listener with utmost clarity, so that even a formally complex piece like the first movement of the Sibelius enjoys a kind of interpretive serenity.

    Conservatory Violinist Receives Prestigious Instrument
By Joanna Chang RELATED STORY: Daniel Austrich: At Home in Oberlin Deutsche Musik Instrumenten Fonds Competition
Austrich, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and
a resident of Hamburg, Germany, since 1997, now studies at Oberlin with Alla Aranovskaya , first violinist of the St. Petersburg Quartet
On the day Austrich won the competition, he performed in concert with other winners at the Hamburg Museum of Art. Deutschland Radio and two major German television stations, ZDS and NDR, recorded the concert.
A musician qualifies to enter the competition only after winning first prize at any international competition (in Daniel's case, first prize at the Jeunesses Musicales competition in Germany in August 2001). Those honored with the use of instruments from the foundation can keep them longer by winning the competition again in subsequent years. Julia Fischer and Viviane Hagner are among the violinists playing instruments from the foundation.
On April 14 and 15, Austrich will perform solo recitals with pianist Alexander Mekinulov in New York and Washington, D.C., respectively. In July 2002, he will perform in the Davos Music Festival Young Artist Series in Switzerland, and in 2003, he will perform Lalo's

by Jay Nordlinger H Messiah Messiah Messiah its Messiah Messiah But the soloist I was most looking forward to hearing was Richard Croft, the tenor, making his New York Philharmonic debut. His last name may be familiar to you: Richard is brother to Dwayne Croft, the baritone frequently heard at the Metropolitan Opera. Richard first came to my attention in a Washington, D.C. Semele It is the tenor, of course, who has the first big aria in Messiah I am reminded of a story a friend and fellow music critic likes to tell: When he was about five years old, his uncle took him to a performance of The Flying Dutchman On the night I attended, David Daniels had called in sick, so the contralto, Anna Larsson, took the bits that had been assigned to him. Sadly, her sound was fuzzy, muffled, and diffuse. Often she could not be heard clearly, especially on her lower notes. Sometimes she sang as though being smothered by a pillow. We can perhaps shift some of the blame to the hall, or rather, church. But neither did Larsson give her arias much character or lift. N Porgy and Bess was recorded complete. And the man who did it was Lorin Maazel.

  • Awesome!
Ilya Grubert is the man!!! I must say that the Myaskovsky was better than the Vainberg in its execution, but they are both awesome concertos. I am going to perform the Myaskovsky very soon in New York, and I must say that this recording was invaluable in my studies. Let me also say that the Vainberg is definitely something I want to play now. This recording is phenomenal! Two Concerti Worthy of Inclusion in the Repertoire
The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Dmitry Yablonsky whose increasing discography has impressed me. These are masterfully managed performances. I particularly want to praise the solo horn and bassoon in the Myaskovsky. For those of you who are interested in 20th-c. Russian orchestral and concerto music (and, in the Myaskovsky, those of you who love the Russian Romantics) this CD is for you.
