Musical traditions on the territory of historic Banat, located mainly in the south-east of Romania, where the Fortress of Timisoara was built almost seven and a half centuries ago, have been mentioned in historical records for over a millennium. In 1871 the "Philharmonic Society of Timisoara" was founded. Its activity was included in the city's artistic life both by the diversity of concerts (choirs, vocal-symphonic, symphonic, chamber) and by the celebrity of its guests who signed in the "Book of Honor" kept as a record thereof: Johannes Brahms (as a pianist), Joseph Joachim, Pablo de Sarasate, Henryk Wieniawski, David Popper, Leopold Auer, Jan Kubelik, and, in the former half of the 20th century, Bela Bartok, Pablo Casals, Jacques Thibaud, Fritz Kreisler, Nathan Milstein, Arthur Rubinstein , Annie Fischer, Gregor Piatigorsky. Romanian musicians, such as Cornelia Corbu - Hollosy,
Gheorghe Dima, Dimitrie Popovici der Bayreuther, Traian Grozavescu, Cella Delavrancea, and especially George Enescu (who gave 10 concerts here as a violinist between 1921 and 1943) gave more glamour to this gallery of illustrious musicians. The "Friends of Music" Association was founded in 1920. The players of the Philharmonic Society joined it and formed a group that wished to be independent. This instrumental group, which changed its denomination several times, continued to work, having quite a remarkable presence in the concert life of Timisoara during the following decades, by tackling an evermore diverse specific repertory.

Twenty-seven-year-old Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov starts his second encore of his solo performance by dragging a chair out from backstage at Davies Symphony Hall, in San Francisco.
"I have been performing since I was five years old," he says in lightly accented English. "It is a great privilege to play for audien ces like you, and you come to hear me play. Between us there is music. But I never get to communicate in words. So, he sits casu ally and crosses his legs, "I want to talk to you. Ask me some questions."
So starts an extraordinary conversation between a remarkable old soul violinist and 1,500 of his closest friends. One person asks why he held his bow so high during the first number, Bach's 'Toccata and Fugue in D minor'. Written originally for the organ, this complicated piece requires a specially rounded bow to make the playing easier, he replies. "And you may have noticed that I did not play that piece on my Baroque violin. It's ill with all the changes in humidity and weather."
"Tell us about your violin," another person tosses across the nearly sold out auditorium. "My instrument was made in Crimea in 1727 by Antonio Stradivarius. It is an ex-Kreisler instrument, meaning that it once belonged to the great violinist, Fritz Kreisler. And I was lucky enough to get it at Christie's auction in 1998." This raises murmurs of

This is by no means the complete list of famous Romanians, but rather a sampling of the names best known outside Romania's borders. Constantin Brâncusi In 1937 and 1938 Brâncusi created a sculptural ensemble in the Romanian town of Targu Jiu. These three important pieces - "The silent Table", "The Gate of the Kiss", and "The Endless Column" - are based on the idea of a "Temple of Meditation" and are a tribute to the Romanian soldiers who died in World War 1. They show the artist's love of Romanian traditional art. The Endless Column, made through the repetition of superimposed symmetrical elements, is inspired by the pillars of Romanian peasant houses, and invites the viewer to extend it into the sky to infinity. Brâncusi's works attracted many great art collectors and presently, most of them can be seen in museums across the United States. Emil Cioran mil Cioran was one of the most celebrated Romanian writers and philosophers of this century. Born in 1911, he graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1932 and became part of a group of enthusiastic and bright people that profoundly influenced the Romanian culture between the two world wars. In 1937 he earned a grant from the french government and left for Paris. Since 1947 he has only written in french. Among his best known works, "Pe culmile disperarii"("In Dire Despair"1934), "Lacrimi si Sfinti"("Tears and Saints"1937), "Precis de decomposition" ("A Manual on Decomposition"1949), "Exercices d'admiration" ("Exercises of Admiration"1985)

Enescu Story
The story goes that George Enescu took on a young, untalented violinist as a pupil, to earn some money. The lad's father, who was rich, paid for a concert for his son, who was to play the violin while Enescu played the piano accompaniment. At the concert, a number of Enescu's friends turned up, including Cortot. Enescu needed some help with the score, and Cortot offered to turn the pages. The Paris press reported this curious event more or less as follows: "We were treated to a strange concert last night. The man who turned pages should have played the piano. The man who played the piano should have played the violin. The man who played the violin should have turned the pages." Back to Haig's main page

he first came to the attention of the world as a child prodigy. A world-class violinist, Midori has been performing concerts for the past 15 years and she's only 25. Midori will perform at 8 p.m. Friday in McCain Auditorium. Midori first began playing when she was 4 years old. Her mother taught violin lessons and was her inspiration. The young Japanese girl began performing concerts when she was 10. Midori made her debut in New York with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra when she was 11 years old. Richard Martin, director of McCain, said an important reason Midori was brought to McCain was because she, unlike many other child prodigies, continues to shine in her field of talent. "She has not lost that sparkle, that magic she had as a youngster," Martin said. Midori will play a variety of classical pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Midori's program will feature music by Cesar Franck, and violin composers George Enescu and Fritz Kreisler. In a tribute to Schubert, Midori will play "Sonata in A Major." She has appeared on "The Tonight Show," recorded albums and performed at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games. She is also the founder of the Midori Foundation, an organization established in 1992 to bring the performing arts into the everyday life of children.
