Customer Reviews: Avg. Customer Rating: The BEST classical music CD on this planet!:
I got this on a Monday and by Tuesday evening, I must have listened to it about 10 times. It is the absolutely best compilation of violin works by the best violinists that ever lived. Yes, there is surface noise due to the age of recordings (most were done during the 1930's and 1940's) but I was absolutely riveted by the music that I didn't even notice the surface noise. This is a CD you really find yourself listening to from beginning to end with no distractions (cooking, reading, etc.) because the music... more info Greatest selection of violin pieces played by the best: This is the greatest CD I have listened to ever. Francescatti is wonderful playing Wieniawaski's etude-caprice in A minor. Jascha Heifetz is great playing the 24th Paganini Caprice and the Bazzini, Massenet, are all great. My favorites are the Carmen Fantasia by Efrem Zimbalist and Scherzo Trantelle by Nathan Milstein. The Sarasate Zigenunerweisen by Efrem Zimbalist is marvelous. I recomend this CD to everybody.

    CRITICAL ACCLAIM
"The most exciting violin recital this listener has heard in quite some time. Mr. Markov's playing is marked by a Romantic effusion that comes so naturally it never seems vulgar or affected. He seems to have stepped directly out the past: although he is a young man - he plays like an old 78 recording come to life, without the pop and sizzle of shellac. Mr. Markov scoops and slides with an emotional intensity that has all but vanished from contemporary violin playing. Somewhere Mischa Elman is smiling."

Vieuxtemps: Violin Concertos Nos. 2, 4, 5 Alexander Markov, violinist; Monte Carlo Though less well remembered than such iconic figures as Paganini and Sarasate, Henri Vieuxtemps was among the most famous virtuoso fiddlers of the 19th century. And like his more illustrious colleagues, he was also a gifted composer; best known naturally, for fiendishly difficult concertos. In this century, Heifetz was Vieuxtemps' most celebrated exponent, but artists as varied as Vasa Prihoda and Sarah Chang have recorded his concertos. Now comes Alexander Markov, a Russian-born American, with volatile accounts of the Second, Fourth and Fifth Concertos.

LEGENDARY
VIOLINISTS
OF THE PAST
A Guide to the Best of the Recent Reissues
by Edith Eisler
There has been a surge of interest in the great violinists of the past recently, as if audiences have tired of the undifferentiated, mass-produced–sounding performances often heard today and begun yearning for the "good old days" when players could be clearly identified by their tone and personality. The resulting flood of reissues on compact disc offers a fascinating look at the style and characteristics of the greatest violinists of the last century. In this selective report on the concerto repertoire, I hope to reclaim some less-known players and stimulate further explorations. The earliest violinist recorded here is Carl Flesch (1873–1944), who is remembered mainly as a great teacher but whose recording of the Beethoven and Brahms Concertos (

VIOLIN PLAYING
As I Teach It
Leopold Auer (1845—1930) belonged to that select company of violin virtuosos who not only established the level of artistic excellence for the nineteenth century, but also trained many of the violinists who surpassed that level in the twentieth. Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz and Efrem Zimbalist (Sr.) were among Auer’s students. Himself a pupil of the great Joseph Joachim, Auer will always be regarded as one of the most important violin pedagogues in history. Receiving poor direction at an early age is disastrous for a violinist. As Auer says, “There is no instrument whose absolute mastery at a later period presupposes such meticulous care and exactitude in the initial stages of study as does the violin.” With this book every beginning violin student will have the benefit of the finest guidance. Violinist
A violinist is an instrumentalist who plays the violin . The terms fiddler or fiddle player are also used. In classical music the "fiddle" terms are usually somewhat informal or jokey: they are more standard expressions in folk music. In between there are nuances of meaning and usage which are difficult to formalize. Composer-violinists were common in the Baroque era - Antonio Vivaldi Arcangelo Corelli and Pietro Locatelli all played the violin. In the early 19th century, Niccolo Paganini did much to expand the instrument's technique. Other notable 19th century violinists include Joseph Joachim (who was friends with Johannes Brahms Leopold Auer (who taught many famous violinists of following generations), Pablo de Sarasate and Eugene Ysaye Among significant later players are:

Judaic Treasures of the
Library of Congress:
George Gershwin
Early in life, George Gershwin (1898-1937) frequented the Yiddish theaters on Second Avenue in New York's Lower East Side and was much taken with the music of Joseph Rumshisky. In 1915, Boris Thomashevsky, reigning star of the Yiddish Theater, invited Gershwin and Sholem Secunda to collaborate on a Yiddish operetta. Gershwin was willing, but Secunda refused to join with a young, musically untrained, publishing-house pianist. Later in life, when he was already a successful writer of popular songs, Gershwin signed a contract with the Metropolitan Opera to write an opera based on Ansky's Dybbuk and was ready to go to Europe to study Jewish music, but having learned that the rights to the play had already been given to Ludovico Rocca, he withdrew Gershwin's idiom was the American scene and its music. Beginning with jazz and popular songs, he broadened his talents thematically and musically, until they culminated in his greatest work, the opera Porgy and Bess (1935).

A Selected Chronology
Born in Portland, Oregon, May 10, 1905, to Isaac Kaufman and Paulina Adler Kaufman, recent immigrants from Romania in 1903. Issac Kaufman opens hat store. At age 5 returns with family to Romania for two years. Fascinated by Romanian Gypsy violinists at his Uncle Herman's wedding, Louis insists he wants to study the violin. Family returns to Portland, Oregon where his father again opens a hat store. Louis begins violin studies First tour in Oregon and Washington during Christmas vacation with Philip Pelz. Six month tour with classic dancer Rozika (Rheingold) on West Coast Vaudeville Pantages circuit. Likes Los Angeles sandy beaches and ice cream best. Visiting Portland while touring, Efrem Zimbalist and American violinist Maude Powell hear the young Kaufman play and urge his family to send him to New York City for further study with Franz Kneisel. Arrives in NYC, studies with Kneisel for 8 years at the Institute of Musical Art and at Blue Hill, Maine for summer studies and chamber music every evening. Later performs chamber music in New York as violinist or violist with Mischa Elman, Fritz Kreisler, Jascha Heifetz, Gregor Piatigorsky and Pablo Casals

String History FAQ's
Q. When did violinists switch to the steel e" string?
A. During the last decade of the 19th century there were two
notable players, Willy Burmeister and Anton Witek, who because of
excessive persiration, began to use the steel e" string when playing
in public. But the use of gut e" a' and d' continued to be widely used until
World War I, when shortages of material and the disruption of
international commerce made it difficult to obtain high quality gut
strings. At this time many violinists were forced by necessity to
begin using the steel e" string, adapting to it rather quickly.
Among these players were Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler, Maud
Powell, Jacques Thibaud. It must be said that there were many players who were critical of the steel e" string, stating that the "wire string sounds distinctly different to the artist than does a the American violinist was quite eloquent on the matter: "The whole question as to whether gut or wire strings are to be preferred may, in my opinion, be referred to the violin itself for decision.
