Kitchen And Co. Draw Chamber Music Aficionados To Duke
John W. Lambert
Classical Music Journal For North Carolina
June 27, 2002 It seems a much more democratic ensemble now, one in which artistic decisions are made by consensus, it would appear, rather than being imposed from the first violinist's chair, as one senses they were, once upon a time. This critic and many music lovers perceive that the classical art is found in its purest and most exalted form within our best string quartets, and there's little doubt that the Ciompi Quartet is one of our top such ensembles. In fairness, they are hardly alone, and there are many outstanding groups, including the group that Kitchen himself helped launch, the Boston-based Borromeo String Quartet ( http://www.borromeoquartet.org /), which even more than Duke's resident ensemble enjoys the world as its stage. But it would be unfair to claim that one is better than the other. They are, when all is said and done, merely different – they are diversely seasoned, as it were, by virtue of the backgrounds and artistic passions and skills of their members. If one views the Ciompi Quartet, which appears frequently in the Triangle, as the more mature ensemble, then one must concurrently see the Borromeo's players as exemplars of the next generation of great artists. That they retain boundless exuberance and freshness was readily apparent throughout the recent Duke concert. The Beethoven is a large and complex score that demands much of both the players and the audience. It, too, was handsomely realized by a group that has embarked on what we can only hope will be a complete recorded edition of Beethoven's quartets – Image Recording's new release of the "Serioso" and Third "Razumovsky" (to use Kitchen's spelling, as contained in program notes for the CD) was on sale at the concert (and we hope to post a review of it in the near future). In retrospect, the Haydn may have been the evening's high water mark, as far as the program's complete works were concerned. This master composer's music is often treated, like a Handel aria in a voice recital, as a warm-up piece, but the BSQ brought it to vivid life, reminding us once again that aside from the fairly frequent appearances of Haydn's name in chamber programs, his other music remains woefully neglected here.

"The Museum is thrilled to have an artistic director of Charles' caliber organize performances of internationally recognized musicians," says Margaret Skove, the Executive Director of the Columbia Museum of Art. "Not only do we have a superb space for the performances, but the Museum is also an excellent visual setting to hear chamber music."
Midlands residents have enjoyed Charles Wadsworth and his engagements for years through the Spoleto festival and through our very own Columbia series. In continuing with the Wadsworth reputation, he "promises that this season will more than live up to any expectations the public might have for future musical enjoyment."
The first of the five concerts will open with two of the most inspired works of all time, Mozart's "QUINTET" in G Minor, "VIOLA QUINTET," with two violas, and Brahms' String Sextet in G Major, "Opus 36." The superb Canadian-American violinist Corey Cerovsek will lead these two brilliant works, with Kirsten Johnson (viola), Nokuthula Ngwenyama (viola), and Kristina Reiko Cooper (cello).

Ether Game ... Fiona in Flight Local Notes: The Camerata and THSO
For your evening listening pleasure, WFIU is pleased to present a couple of live, concert recordings of two local orchestras, the Camerata and the Terre Haute Symphony. Both showcase the bow and strings of acclaimed violinist and Bloomington native Corey Cerovsek, and one of them features Saint Paul Sunday host Bill McGlaughlin at the podium.
In February, Bill McGlaughlin visited Bloomington to join Corey Cerovsek on stage with the Camerata for Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 and Elgar's "Enigma" Variations. In light of this momentous collaboration of an acclaimed public radio host, an established local orchestra, and a local luminary, WFIU was delighted to acquire an exceptional recording of this concert. You can hear it Monday, April 1, in the weekly slot previously held by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. On ensuant Mondays in April and beyond, tune in at 8 p.m. for the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.
Last November, while WFIU was in the midst of our annual Fund Drive, engineers Michael Paskash and John Shelton took a trip to Terre Haute, where the second-oldest orchestra in Indiana was celebrating its 75th season with a notable presentation. Corey Cerovsek, who last appeared on the Tilson Auditorium stage in 1989 as a child prodigy alongside his famous teacher Josef Gingold, joined the Terre Haute Symphony for a performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Conducted by David Bowden, the performance can be heard on Wednesday, April 3, in the weekly slot previously held by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The following Wednesday, WFIU welcomes the Cleveland Orchestra to this Wednesday evening slot.

Winfield, Kansas 67156 USA We have just completed the fourth annual Bridges Conference at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, USA. Highlights of the year's conference included the presentation to the college of a sculpture titled "Genesis" by sculptor and conferee Brent Collins. The piece stands in front of the Beech Science Center on the campus. The college owns one other sculpture titled "Pax Mundi" by Collins. This work is located in the foyer of the mathematics department.
Collins, an independent artist, and Carlo Sequin, from the computer department of the University of California at Berkeley, have collaborated on the mathematical implications of Collins' intuitive sculptures. Sequin investigates the mathematics of the sculptures and produces three-dimensional models through a process known as sterolithography. Sequin exhibited some of these models and spoke on the second day of the conference.

Norwich Bulletin Spring is usually synonymous with rebirth, renewal or anything that has to do with beginnings. For some groups, spring actually means an ending. That's the case with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, whose 2003-04 season comes to an end Saturday. The 8 p.m. concert at the Garde Arts Center in New London features guest soloist Corey Cerovsek. The violinist has earned an international following over the last 15 years. For his appearance with the ECSO, Cerovsek will perform Brahms' "Violin Concerto in D Major." The concert also features Weber's "Euryanthe Overture" and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." Cerovsek has performed with orchestras around the world including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Prague Symphony, Israel Philharmonic and Berlin Symphony. In America, he has performed with the orchestras of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Detroit, Denver and others. This year, he performed the complete Beethoven Sonatas over three concerts at the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston.
