This highly regarded presentation of the adaptation of a traditional service is patterned after the twelfth-century Christmas service at King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England, and consists of scripture lessons read in conjunction with the performance of international carols. The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra is opening its 2002-2003 season on Tuesday October 29, 2002 with a program which we are certain, will be attended with great interest by all music lovers . To ensure that classic music reaches the largest possible audience, the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of General Music Director and Permanent Conductor Gürer Aykal will, as always, perform its monthly concerts in both the European and the Anatolian coasts of Istanbul. The concerts in the Anatolian coast will be held in the Kadýköy Peoples Education Center and in Istanbul in the Lutfi Kýrdar Concert Hall.
This season, the Lutfi Kýrdar Hall concerts will start at 20.00h. and the ones in the Kadýköy People’s Education Center at 20.00h .
The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra which launches its 2002-2003 season with many new surprises, will give its first concert on October 29 at the Lutfi Kýrdar Concert Hall and on October 30 at the Kadýköy People’s Education Center. This concert will feature soloist Juliana-James Yaffè; the famed soprano will sing the world première of Arif Mardin’s “I will Wait” work, followed, on the occasion of Nazým Hikmet’s 100th birthday, by the Orchestra’s performance for the first time in Istanbul, of Nedim Otyam’s “Kuvayi Milliye”. On the same concert the Orchestra will also offer Mussorgski/Ravels “Picture at an Exhibition”. Juliana-James Yaffè made her name by her superb singing in Italian, English and German and her rich repertory of opera parts: she proved to be the best soprano in the style of noted Dutch soprano Elly Ameling.

Hatfield Hall is located on the southeast side of campus, with parking in the adjacent Moench Hall lot. From its modern glass-fronted lobby to its state-of-the-art, 602-seat theater and new alumni center, Hatfield Hall provides 46,942 square-feet of rehearsal and practice rooms for students, new space for alumni activities, and offices for alumni affairs, development and external affairs staffs. The Hatfield Hall Theater replaces the 76-year-old Moench Hall Auditorium, which is being remodeled into new space for the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. Hatfield Hall was made possible through the generosity of 1984 alumnus Mike Hatfield. It was named in honor of his parents, Larry and Pat. Musical events during the Celebration Week's schedule includes current and alumni members of Rose-Hulman's Drama Club performing "Guys and Dolls, In Concert", on Feb. 1; Indiana University's Broadway Cabaret performing current and popular Broadway hits, on Feb. 3; and a patriotic concert by Terre Haute's award-winning Banks of the Wabash Barbershop Chorus, on Feb. 6.

Tuesday, June 18, 2002 CSO, violinist speak Italian well

By Nicole Hamilton, nhamilton@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Played well, Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons would sound good anywhere. But hearing the masterpiece al fresco, just as the sun sets in the summer sky, seems the way the composer would have wanted it. Ms. Wilson seemed to leap onto her platform to conduct the concert's opener, Gioacchino Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville All evening, the young conductor paid thorough attention to each section, working to bring out the subtle melodies and phrasings while allowing the orchestra members room to let go and play their best. Rossini's Overture featured stark contrasts in dynamics and a climbing crescendo that gave color to the famous work. With its difficult bowing, wide shifts on the fingerboard, and double- and triple-stop passages, La Campanella from Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, Op. 7

March 12,
Canadian violinist Corey Cerovsek is back in Boston to continue celebrating the centenary of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , where he, once again accompanied by Paavali Jumppanen on piano, is performing the third concert in a cycle devoted to Beethoven's violin sonatas. In a preview of that concert, which takes place Sunday, March 14, Cerovsek and Jumppanen return to WGBH's Studio One for another LIVE performance of some of Beethoven's sonatas.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1972, Cerovsek began his career as a prodigy, having graduated with a dual degree in music and math from Indiana University at age 15. He continued his studies there with Josef Gingold, earning his doctorate, again in music and math, at age 18. He plays on the Guarneri del Gesu violin once used by the virtuoso violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski in the 1800s. About this instrument, Cerovsek has written, "When I play the Wieniawski del Gesu, I find much more than a beautiful sound. The instrument has a soul, and I respond to its palette of colors and internal sense of timing." Previously on this program - Playlists Coming up on this program

Pickin’ and Grinin’ By JUSTIN KERN Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, Scott Pearson regularly listened to bluegrass music and learned how to play flatpick guitar and mandolin with his parents. Pearson now lives in Warren, Pennsylvania, and his matured musical talents brought him first place in last year’s Mayville Bluegrass Festival flatpicking contest. “My parents play and enjoy bluegrass and when we were growing up, there was a concert or festival going on every other weekend. There aren’t really any other bluegrass contests like this in the area, not with the quality of prizes and the growing size of the festival like in Mayville,” Pearson said. The Mayville-Chautauqua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Community Music Project are planning to kick off the Third Annual Mayville Bluegrass Festival with an even larger mix of unique music, family-geared fun and bluegrass contests and workshops than in the previous years, according to festival organizer Bill Ward. “Ellicottville has jazz, Fredonia has the Red, White and Blue Festival, and we were looking for a genre-specific festival that is family-friendly. And because we’re aimed at mainly bluegrass music and it being family-friendly, the response from the fans has been tremendous. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to predict this year’s crowd to be in the tens of thousands,” Ward said.
