DUFFY'S TAVERN: A BROADCAST LOG AND HISTORY Compiled and written by Martin Grams, Jr. Walk into any office today, and you may be greeted by the man behind a shiny desk. "Leave us proceed with business." A mental picture of Ed Gardner immediately flashes across the mind of your true radio listener when this corny bit of speech is used. Which is all well and good as far as the "master of malaprop" is concerned. In fact, Gardner has turned the malapropism into a national institution. But Gardner didn't become such an influence on the nation's conversational habits by growing up in a transom, as he might put it. What then, lies behind a man who could turn an English Grammarian's nightmare into a highly profitable way of life? Eddie Gardner was born Edward Poggenberg on June 29, 1901, in Astoria, Long Island. At the age of fourteen, Gardner secured his first after-school job as a pianist at O'Bryan's café, a colorful neighborhood bistro that served partly as a model for Duffy's. Had Ed suspected the significance of this position, things might have been different. As it was, his stay there was short-lived. His mother happened to walk by one day, caught a fleeting glimpse through the swinging door of her son at the piano, and that was that. Ed once remarked that this was one of the few jobs he ever left without being fired. Gardner had dropped out of school at the age of sixteen, after his second year at Bryant High School, to begin what was to be a wild decade of odd jobs. "If Public School #4 was good enough for Archie, then why should I complain?" Gardner recalled in 1943. "The only degrees I'm interested in are Fahrenheit and Centigrade." The six-foot-two Irish-German-American used to boss a rough, tough street gang named the One Ol' Cats out in Astoria, Long Island. At the time, further exposure to knowledge was not deemed necessary. "The family," he said, "thought I was pretty well educated and by that time and judging by the standards of the neighborhood, I was."

Byline: Anna Jane Grossman Kevin Croke and Laurayne Teutschman Met: Dec. 8, 1999 Engaged: Dec. 7, 2002 Projected Wedding Date: Aug. 20, 2003 Meet the happy hoteliers! Laurayne Teutschman, 33, is a manager who sells conference space for Manhattan's five sleek W hotels. Kevin Croke, also 33, is director of sales and marketing at the more old-school Roosevelt, on 45th Street. His hotel offers a conservative ballroom perfect for bar mitzvahs; her boasts plastic sheets for combining food and sex. They met at an industry holiday party at the Rihga Royal. At the time, she was working for the Roosevelt, where he was about to transfer from a Hilton near Wall Street. The burly, baby-faced Mr. Croke apparently was a bit of an industry rake. "The hotel business is predominantly female," he said. "And without a doubt, being young, single and in the hotel business, you can do a lot of fun things. From the time I got to New York, I never had a serious relationship that was more than a few months." He was introduced to Ms. Teutschman and a bunch of other Roosevelt "gals" (a favorite word of his) as their soon-to-be boss, and was entranced by the dimple on the left side of her mouth and her soft, hospitable voice. "I made several advances to Laurayne in a variety of ways, and she always shot me down," he said. "Like we'd go out, and I'd try to grab her and kiss her in the back of taxis. I'd say, 'Give me a little sugar,' and she'd jump out of the cab!"

Max was the larger-than-life drummer with the Ambrose Orchestra for many years, who also had a unique Jewish-style humour. Prior to joining Ambrose in late 1927, he had been with Leon van Straten's band in 1926 and also was briefly with Fred Elizalde's band (which seems to be made up of Ambrose musicians) and Al Starita's Kit-Cat band (probably a temporary substitute for Eric Little). He was a regular member of Ronnie Munro's band which recorded for Parlophone and Imperial from 1926 to 1929, and also with Arthur Lally's band at Decca in the early 1930s. His stint with Ambrose lasted until 1940 and his wry comments may be heard on a number of comedy titles, including the famous number "Cohen the Crooner (The Crosby of Mile-End)" which is extant on film. Of Max's subsequent career, I know nothing, but suspect he may have become a solo variety act.
