The concert is at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Pollard Auditorium. Jamaican composer-pianist Eleanor Alberga and British violinist Thomas Bowes have made their marks individually as well as "in concert." Alberga moved from her native Jamaica to London in 1970 when she won both piano and vocal scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music. A finalist in England's National Piano Competition, she has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Covent Garden. Her diverse background combines rigorous classical music training with experience as a member of the Jamaican Folk Singers and as a dancer with an African Dance company. Her works have been commissioned and performed by the London Philharmonic, the London Chamber Symphony, and the European Women's Orchestra. She has worked with the London Contemporary Dance Theatre as composer, conductor, and music director. Her music is published by Oxford University Press.

Remember their names, because long after the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association can no longer afford them, you'll be hearing about this phenomenal husband-and wife duo. They make up Double Exposure, the violin/piano team that left its audience aghast Saturday night at the Pollard Auditorium. It must be the extraterrestrial Hale-Bopp. How else can we explain the sudden spate of extraordinary musical performances? After the fabulous rendering of the Berlioz "Requiem" two weeks ago by the Oak Ridge Symphony and Chorus, one assumed that ORCMA's remaining season concerts could only go downhill. Not so! Subscribers to the Chamber Music series were riveted by Double Exposure. The musical intimacy, the superior technique and the fresh and free-wheeling rhythmic aplomb of these two musicians give them an edge over just about everybody, and they clearly are the best violin/piano duo most of us have ever heard. The concert was made possible by the support of the Cyrus Feldman Memorial Trust. Feldman's widow and children were on hand to experience the exhilaration. We can think of no person more deserving of such a top standard memorial program than the late Cy Feldman, who characteristically would have summed up this history-making concert in one succinct colorful word.

Hereford String Orchestra RECENT CONCERT Leominster Priory, 16 th July 2003 This year is the bicentenary of the birth of Hector Berlioz. To mark the occasion we shall be playing one of his popular opera overtures. Hector BERLIOZ (1803-1869) Symphonie fantastique Berlioz composed a wide range of orchestral and choral works, including three operas, at least 29 choral works, many songs, concert overtures, large orchestral pieces and compositions for other musical groups. The opera , based on Shakespeare's Much ado about nothing Although the opera is now rarely performed, the overture remains a brilliant and popular item of the concert repertoire. Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Violin Concerto in D Op 77 Allegro non troppo Adagio Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo We are delighted to welcome back Thomas Bowes as our soloist tonight. Brahms' Violin Concerto was written for his lifelong friend Joseph Joachim. It was composed at a summer retreat at Portschach on the Wothersee. There Brahms also wrote his mellow and lyrical Second Symphony, in the same key of D major. In writing this concerto, Brahms collaborated to some extent with Joachim, though he did not adopt all the violinist's suggestions. He did, however, leave Joachim to compose his own cadenza in the first movement. The first movement opens with an unusually long tutti section, which is eventually broken into by the flourishing entry of the solo violin. Only later does the violin restate and embellish the opening themes. Dark tones make themselves felt in the development section, but overall, the mood is one of confident tranquillity.
