Activist Music for $15.00. Journey
written for violinist Mary Lou Newmark, was first performed at a concert of electro-acoustic music in Los Angeles in late 1999 and was recorded by Sabrina Ann Berger in 2001. Although the majority of my writing these days is for traditional acoustic ensembles, I've worked extensively with electronic music since the time I was fifteen (in the mid-seventies, when it took nearly a roomful of oscillators and patch cords to produce a mere sine wave!), and have long used synthesizers, samplers and digital audio in the context of scoring commercial film and TV projects.

Alex Shapiro
Biography
Alex Shapiro was born in New York City in 1962 and was educated at The Julliard School as a composition student of Craig Shuler and Bruce Adolphe, and at Manhattan School of Music, where she was a student of Ursula Mamlok and John Corigliano. Her earlier composition studies were with Leo Edwards at Mannes College of Music and with Michael Czajkowski and George Tsontakis at the Aspen Music School. An accomplished pianist as well as composer, Ms. Shapiro was a student of New York recitalist Marshall Kreisler. Ms. Shapiro moved to Los Angeles in 1983 and began her career composing scores for films, television and documentary projects. Since 1996, she has returned her focus to concert music and is steadily commissioned to compose new pieces, often by musicians and ensembles that have previously performed her work. Alex's scores can be found in libraries and universities nationwide and her music is regularly programmed, averaging over fifty performances of her works each year in the US and abroad. Alex's awards include a 2000 Artist Fellowship Award for the Performing Arts from The California Arts Council in recognition of her work for chamber ensembles, and a grant from the Los Angeles Alumni chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon to compose a new chamber work for their June 2001 concert. Ms. Shapiro's work for double bass and piano.

Home Introduction Biographical Sketch Photo Gallery ... Purchase CD Sabrina Ann Berger Articles Hearing Two Generations Mother/Daughter musicians play recital to benefit Norwalk preschool By KAREN CERRETA The Hour, CT
Thursday, February 6, 2003 "Ultimately, I would rather be accompanying her than anyone else - we anticipate each other's energies without having to communicate. I know her best," said pianist Dorita Berger on her upcoming recital with her daughter/violinist Sabrina Ann Berger. "I used to have the usual anxiety as a performer and then be nervous for her at the same time, but I don't do that now," added Dorita Berger. "She is in charge of her own responsibilities, and we are in charge of the music as equals." Billing themselves as "Two Generations - The Berger Duo," this mother and daughter team will perform "Music of My People" at 7 p.m. Sunday to benefit the Aleph Bet Preschool at Beth Israel Synagogue in Norwalk. Focusing on music of Jewish composers and of the eastern European tradition, the Bergers add a curious twist to what could be a very conventional program. In addition to performing on her acoustic violin, Sabrina Berger will also introduce the audience to the enhanced sounds of her five-string electric violin.
