Ticket Order Information Description of Festival To increase the artistic exchange between the North European and American new music communities, the Seattle Chamber Players presents a collaborative festival with noted musicians from countries that surround the Baltic Sea. As part of our concert season in a festival format (three concerts in three days), the ensemble will be giving programs of music by living composers from Baltic countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Artistic Advisor to the Seattle Chamber Players and curator of Icebreaker II is musicologist and music producer Dr. Elena Dubinets, who has co-organized several highly-acclaimed contemporary music festivals and conferences in different countries, including the Seattle Chamber Players Icebreaker: New Voices from Russia festival of contemporary Russian music in 2002. The project has two key components. First, the Seattle Chamber Players will perform music of contemporary composers from all nine countries of the Baltic Sea region; and second, the festival will involve an educational component: a musicological symposium on Baltic music of today. Each of the Baltic Sea countries will send its representatives to the festival. Leading musicologists from these countries will give one-hour presentations about the contemporary music scenes of their countries, and the composers will present their own music in additional one-hour seminars.

Review: Tesseract (Wan't to buy Tesseract CDs? Click here TESSERACT – Tesseract Independently distributed by Tesseract (TCD-001) Tesseract is a US quintet from the west coast. They perform progressive art rock with a confortable mixture of folk and classical music, analog goodies, amidst much experimenting. Don Tillman is in charge of guitar-keyboard-vocal-cymbal duties, Karen Bentley fiercely rocks her violin, Julius Smith smartly models all sort of instruments with his synths and plays guitar, while the rhythm section is constituted by Dave Berners on bass and Josh Schroeter on drums and percussion. Interesting note: Karen is the session violinist featured on Camel’s recent HARBOUR OF TEARS. The album’s opener is an experimental scary little thing played on a synthesizer. The first "real track" is subtly entitled HEISENBERG’S DAUGHTER; ah! the uncertainty principle It is clearly reminiscent of early Kansas, especially due to Karen’s contribution which is quite appealing. A hint of Gentle Giant and ELP surfaces. The Mellotron and Memory moog also make a prominent appearance. Next up is an 11 minute epic: CAST OF THOUSANDS. It progresses via 4 different phases all cooked up and ready to go. Tesseract describe its recipe as "If you think of your life as a play, the cast would be acting out the parts of all the folks you meet along the way". Various wind instruments are modelled by a synth. ALLEGRO ASSAI is part of a classical Bach violin concerto in A minor that’s brilliantly arranged and performed by Tesseract. There’s an interesting duel between Bentley’s organic violin and Julius’ modelled one. RICE is heavily keyboard orientated by the different arrangements it possesses. Be it classical piano segments, Rhodes Chroma or synths, it’s intelligently textured. The violin provides further enhancement. Track 6, is another experimental piece that’s layered solely by eight tracks (!!) of cymbals. Not my cup of tea. The last tune, VANTAGE POINT, is an instrumental. This piece is part of a mini rock opera that never saw the light of day.

NEWS STORY Wallace Leung The Helikon Ensemble is the most recent group jockeying for position on the Vancouver new music scene. Although new, the ensemble brings over 50 years of collective professional experience to "Time Resounding," their March 17 concert at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. Little did Helikon know when planning this concert last fall, it would be a tribute to founding conductor Wallace Leung, who died from viral encephalitis in January. Leung was a strong guiding force behind the fledgling ensemble, formed in 1999 although its individual members met well before that. "It all began back in '94," says clarinetist Karen Noel-Bentley, one of the original members. "That was when several of our founding members played Peter Maxwell Davies' 'Eight Songs for a Mad King' under Wallace Leung. We worked really well together and at that time, there was no ensemble in town like that." And so the Helikon Ensemble was formed, deriving its name from Mount Helicon, the ancient Grecian home of the Muses. But with a "k"? "It's there just because Wallace wanted to have a 'k' in the name," says Noel-Bentley. "He liked the way it looked."
