Supertenor Placido Domingo was on hand for the program of Wagner, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, though as conductor rather than vocal soloist. And Rachel Barton was guest artist in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Last year the Chicago-born Barton was front page news for weeks while the court case stemming from her 1995 train accident in Winnetka went to trial. Happily, the evening's star power was exactly where it belonged, in service to the music. Now in her mid-20s, Barton played with the fearless confidence that has been her hallmark since she first caught the ear of Chicago music lovers as a grade schooler on the youth competition circuit. When her accident turned her into a local celebrity, many casual observers questioned her talent. Maybe, they thought, this tale of a tragically interrupted international career was simply hype. Hype it wasn't. Barton is the real thing, a prodigious talent with obvious personality and a clear-eyed vision of what she wants her performances to convey. SUMMER FLUTE RETREAT The Fourth Annual Summer Flute Retreat is scheduled for June 23 - 29 on campus. Teaching faculty include Gerald V. Carey, Sue Gillio, Cindi Isenhower, Angela Loring and Anne Badger, retreat accompanist. The participant recital will be 9:30 a.m. June 29 in the Cultural Centre. The Flute Retreat provides flutists of all ages and abilities the opportunity to grow musically and to hear and learn new repertoire. Symphony officials are taking the theme from Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm's recent Cool Cities Initiative that identifies symphony orchestras as one of the key features that make a city "cool." "When people come to a concert, they quite often come up to me afterward and rave on and on how great the concert was," said Barbara Globensky, president of the board of directors. "We brought the idea of 'Cool Cities' forward. We were going to have 'Cool Cities, Cool Concerts,' but we thought 'Cool Cities - Hot Concerts' was better. They (members of the audience) don't just sit back and listen to the music, they get really involved and moved by what they hear and the excellence of the musicians. People get really excited." The season will include eight subscription concerts and three special concerts, including an Independence Day celebration.

May 1, 2003 Printer Friendly Back Prairie inspires guitar-violin duet B Y R OBERT L OERZEL DIVERSIONS EDITOR S aturday’s concert by classical guitarist Muriel Anderson and violinist Rachel Barton will feature a suite that Anderson composed just for the occasion — called, appropriately enough, “The Prairie Sonata.” “I wanted to make something very special,” Anderson said in a phone interview. “It’s a real challenge to write for one of the world’s finest virtuosos on the violin.” Anderson and Barton have collaborated on a number of occasions, since they were brought together a few years ago for an almost impromptu performance on WGN-AM radio. “I handed her some music, and we played it,” Anderson said of that first duet. “Our first time playing together was on the air.” Although some duets are more like solo performances with one instrument dominating while the other accompanies, Anderson said her work with Barton tends to be more like a duet of equals. Each musician takes turns playing lead and accompaniment. For the new “Prairie Sonata,” Anderson incorporated some local history into her composition.
