By Richelle Thompson
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati was a crossroads for African-Americans in the first half of the 20th century, a place where discrimination butted against tolerance. At the main train station, an African-American heading south had to sit in a separate, blacks-only section. A trip north meant sitting anywhere. Cincinnati today is still a community at a crossroads, a city grappling with race problems that have simmered for decades. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS in our forum , or just see what others are saying. The Rev. Mr. Shuttlesworth has spent most of his life carrying placards, organizing demonstrations and fighting for equality. The 79-year-old Roselawn resident said he still prays that people will put aside violence for reasoned talk and negotiations. For more than 60 years, Marian Spencer has been on the front lines of the local civil rights movement. She has fought for employment rights, education and housing and was the first African-American woman elected to Cincinnati City Council, in 1983.

It seems fairly obvious - actually crystal clear that:
- what our main focus should be on are:
unsolved problems
and even undefined problems
- knowledge gaps to be filled
- important questions - not even yet asked
BUT:
- Our education
is nearly exclusively focussed on disseminating what exists
- while we know by experience that
- our biggest opportunities almost always are linked to what does not yet exist new knowledge, products etc. We see here a major neglect - a major imbalance in todays education! UNSOLVED PROBLEMS IN STELLAR EVOLUTION
Edited by M. Livio, Cambridge University Press, 2000, pp: 303, ISBN 0-521-78091-8 (hc); Price: $69.95
This book is a collection of review technical papers presented at an international conference held at the Space Telescope Science Institute in May 1998, and edited by Mario Livio, a leader in the field of stellar evolution. The review articles address in depth the recent progress made by both theorists and observers to understand the fundamental processes for stellar structure and evolution. It emphasizes the many unsolved problems, and touches on the more general puzzle of galaxy formation and evolution. Written by experts in the field, this book is an in-depth solid review of stellar structure and evolution, addressed mainly to professionals in the field. It is the most up-to-date technical reference that could enlighten graduate students, researchers, and faculty members giving e.g. a seminar course on topics covering fundamental processes in stellar structure and evolution. The book's price is $69.95 reasonable for such a timely professional textbook.

Although the Milky Way is the most studied and best understood galactic system, there are many fundamental questions about our Galaxy that remain unanswered. This book concentrates on those questions which have the widest applicability in all of astrophysics, and for which answers are most likely to be forthcoming in the next few years. Is the Milky Way a barred spiral, and if so, what are its properties? Is the disk of the Milky Way axisymmetric and what does the answer tell us about its dynamical history? Is there a black hole at the center of the Galaxy? How far does the Galaxy extend? How much dark matter is there in the Milky Way system? And more. Contents

This is a collection of open problems in Discrete Mathematics which are currently being researched by members of the DIMACS community. These problems are easily stated, require little mathematical background, and may readily be understood and worked on by anyone who is eager to think about interesting and unsolved mathematical problems. Some of these problems are quite hard and have been open for a long time. Others are newer. For further information on a particular problem, you may write to the associated researcher. Although these problems are intended for undergraduates, it is expected that high school students, teachers, graduate students and professional mathematicians will be drawn to this collection. This is not discouraged. Each of these problems is associated with some member of DIMACS. If you have any questions, comments, insights or solutions, please send email to the researcher who is listed with the problem.

The Riemann Hypothesis: The Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics > Customer Review #1: Leaves the reader somewhat disappointed.

Leaves the reader somewhat disappointed. I picked up this book with great expectations, having read the publishers publicity. To be frank, I was left disappointed. The book tells the reader very little about the wonderful and mysterious character of the Riemann hypothesis and leaves both mathematical novices and those who know about the intricacies of higher Mathematics dissatisfied. This is indeed a pity! Having said this, Mr Sabbaghs story is eminently readable and enlightening. The book has many sections that are in effect a diary of the conversations with various Mathematicians. These give an insight into the thought processes, passions, motivations, and rivalries that exist in the select community of Number Theorists. The pen portraits of the main protagonists is quite interesting even though it sheds little light on the character of the Riemann hypothesis and how it enthrals those working on its proof.

Prime Obsession: Bernhard Riemann and the Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics > Customer Review #1: Good overview

This book accomplishes two things very well. It explains the history behind the Riemann Hypothesis and also the relevant mathematics. I like how the author structured the book and also how he simplified the math somewhat. However, the math contained in this book can be challenging if you dont have any background. I would recommend a basic understanding of calculus if you want to understand the math. However, the math is kept separate from the history, so if you just want a historical overview, then this book will also work well. I recommend this book to anyone interested in math and math history.

Prime Obsession: Bernhard Riemann and the Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics
by: John Derbyshire Editorial Review:
Bernhard Riemann was an underdog of sorts, a malnourished son of a parson who grew up to be the author of one of mathematics' greatest problems. In Prime Obsession , John Derbyshire deals brilliantly with both Riemann's life and that problem: proof of the conjecture, "All non-trivial zeros of the zeta function have real part one-half." Though the statement itself parses as nonsense to anyone but a mathematician, Derbyshire walks readers through the decades of reasoning that led to the Riemann Hypothesis in such a way as to clear it up perfectly. Riemann himself never proved the statement, and it remains unsolved to this day. Prime Obsession offers alternating chapters of step-by-step math and a history of 19th-century European intellectual life, letting readers take a breather between chunks of well-written information. Derbyshire's style is accessible but not dumbed-down, thorough but not heavy-handed. This is among the best popular treatments of an obscure mathematical idea, inviting readers to explore the theory without insisting on page after page of formulae.

Front Page ... Taste of D.C. a big draw among gourmands Nobel Prize and unsolved problem
By Jeffrey Marsh
J. MIchael Bishop's How to Win the Nobel Prize An Unexpected Life In Science
Dr. Bishop calls his career "an unexpected life in science" because, unlike many scientists, he did not discover his vocation as a child. Born in 1936 in rural Pennsylvania, the son of a Lutheran pastor, he spent his elementary school years in a two-room schoolhouse, moved on to a small high school and then to Gettysburg College. When he graduated, he was still so naive that he wrote to Harvard Medical School and asked if he might visit the campus so he could see how it compared with his other option, the University of Pennsylvania.
This letter so amused the admissions office that they posted it on the bulletin board for all to see, but Dr. Bishop must have mightily impressed the Harvard medical faculty in other ways as well, because he was not only admitted, but allowed to follow his own path, spending his second year doing independent research and skipping most of the required fourth-year courses to study viruses.
After two years as a house physician at Mass. General Hospital, he left the practice of clinical medicine to pursue research at the National Institutes of Health, spent a year in Germany, and in 1968 returned to America to join the University of California at San Francisco, where he has been ever since. Shortly thereafter, Harold Varmus, another late developer who took up medicine after receiving a master's degree in English literature, arrived as a postdoctoral fellow, and the two began an exceptional scientific partnership that over the next 15 years turned UCSF into a powerhouse in molecular biology.
