Unsolved problems in physics
The following is an incomplete list of outstanding problems in physics . Some of these problems are theoretical , meaning that existing theories seem incapable of explaining some observed phenomenon or experimental result. Others are experimental , meaning that there is a difficulty in creating an experiment to test a proposed theory or investigate a phenomenon in greater detail.
  • Accretion disc jets. Why do the accretion discs surrounding certain astronomical objects, such as the nuclei of active galaxies , emit radiation jets along their polar axes? Amorphous solids. What is the nature of the transition between a fluid or regular solid and a glassy phase ? What are the microscopic physics giving rise to the general properties of glasses? Fusion power . Is it possible to construct a practical nuclear reactor that is powered by the nuclear fusion rather than nuclear fission Galaxy rotation problem . Why do galaxies rotate at speeds inconsistent with their apparent mass Gamma ray bursters. What is the nature of these extraordinarily energetic astronomical objects?

Physicists study the behaviour and interactions of matter and radiation. The laws of physics are generally expressed as mathematical relations. Physics is very closely related to the other natural sciences, particularly chemistry, the science of molecules and the chemical compounds that they form in bulk. Chemistry draws on many fields of physics, particularly quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism. However, chemical phenomena are sufficiently varied and complex that chemistry is usually regarded as a separate discipline.

Unsolved Problems Of Life
( Originally Published 1893 ) UNSOLVED PROBLEMS OF LIFE-THE OLD POST-ROAD AND ITS HELL GATE BRANCHES-HOMES OF MERCHANT PRINCES-MANHATTANS BIGGEST TREE THE old colonel advises me to buy a tub and sun myself in it during these early days of autumn. He found me this morning a perplexed philosopher. I had been troubled by the unsolved problems of life. My opposite neighbor, name and nativity unknown, who lives in a shabby little frame-house, always runs to his door when he hears the sturdy step of Bob, the postman, turn the corner, and hails him as he passes with an inquiry for letters. Nobody thinks of writing to him. He has had but one letter this year, and yet he would as soon think of omitting his breakfast as of letting this ceremonial of inquiry pass. Why he does it is a problem which puzzles me. I put it to the postman, and he figured upon it thoughtfully for a moment and then gave it up; but he also gave it to me as a bit of his experience that the people on his route who seldom received a letter were always the most anxious to learn whether the mail had brought anything for them. It was of my grandmother—the picture in my library of a dainty maiden in clinging robes and baby waist, and with great sunny curls heaped high above her unwrinkled forehead, is her portrait painted in the day of her belleship—in the later years of her life, when her cap was her care and her knitting was her comfort. " Felix," she said, one day, as she stopped knitting to smooth down the long lace lappets of her cap," I have been thinking while you were at school how little we learn here in threescore years, and yet when we are children we expect to learn everything by the time we are grown up. But we'll know it all by-and-by, that's one comfort, and for a little while it doesn't signify."

    Crime:
    The Unsolved Problem
    Melvin D. Barger
What causes crime? Why do some individuals possess tendencies which lead them to commit acts of violence and predation: robberies, assaults, rape, and other felonies? What sets the habitual or occasional criminal apart from the mainstream of society? More important, what can be done to "change" criminals into productive, law-abiding citizens? The theory that has partly governed public policy for many years is that crime is caused by an unjust society. A most eloquent spokesman for this point of view was Ramsey Clark, who served as assistant attorney general in the Kennedy Administration and attorney general in the Johnson Administration. Here's how Clark described the crime problem in his well-known 1970 book, Crime in America: If we are to deal meaningfully with crime, what must be seen is the dehumanizing effect on the individual of slums, racism, ignorance and violence, of corruption and impotence to fulfill rights, of poverty and unemployment and idleness, of generations of malnutrition, of congenital brain damage and prenatal neglect, of sickness and disease, of pollution, of decrepit, dirty, ugly, unsafe, overcrowded housing, of alcoholism and narcotics addiction, of avarice, anxiety, fear, hatred, hopelessness and injustice. These are the fountainheads of crime. They can be controlled. As imprecise, distorted and prejudiced as our learning is, these sources of crime and their controllability clearly emerge to any who would see.

    Unsolved Problems in Playing-Card Research
    Background
In the January/February 1999 issue of The Playing-Card (Vol XXVII No 4), IPCS president Robert Kissel invited members to contribute to a list of unsolved problems in playing-card research. This would be the playing-card equivalent of the famous list of unsolved mathematical problems published by David Hilbert 100 years ago.

Unsolved Problems concerning Tarot and Italian Cards
  • Can the type of cards, both regular and Tarots (not standardised nearly enough to form a standard pattern), called by Sylvia Mann 'archaic' be definitely assigned to Ferrara, as conjectured by Dummett, to Venice, as supposed by almost everyone else, or to any other city?
  • Can definite evidence be found to assign the standard pattern exemplified by early Trappola cards from north of the Alps to Venice, or perhaps to Trent or some other city?
  • Two questions relate to Piedmont. The first is this: Various features of Tarot games played in Piedmont indicate a connection with Bolgna:

    Unsolved Problems
Does there exist a number that is perfect and odd?
A given number is perfect if it is equal to the sum of all its proper divisors. This question was first posed by Euclid in ancient Greece. This question is still open. Euler proved that if N is an odd perfect number, then in the prime power decomposition of N , exactly one exponent is congruent to 1 mod 4 and all the other exponents are even. Furthermore, the prime occurring to an odd power must itself be congruent to 1 mod 4. A sketch of the proof appears in Exercise 87, page 203 of Underwood Dudley's Elementary Number Theory. It has been shown that there are no odd perfect numbers
