The Riemann Hypothesis: The Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics > Customer Review #1: Leaves the reader somewhat disappointed.
Leaves the reader somewhat disappointed. I picked up this book with great expectations, having read the publishers publicity. To be frank, I was left disappointed. The book tells the reader very little about the wonderful and mysterious character of the Riemann hypothesis and leaves both mathematical novices and those who know about the intricacies of higher Mathematics dissatisfied. This is indeed a pity! Having said this, Mr Sabbaghs story is eminently readable and enlightening. The book has many sections that are in effect a diary of the conversations with various Mathematicians. These give an insight into the thought processes, passions, motivations, and rivalries that exist in the select community of Number Theorists. The pen portraits of the main protagonists is quite interesting even though it sheds little light on the character of the Riemann hypothesis and how it enthrals those working on its proof.

The Riemann hypothesis , first formulated by Bernhard Riemann in , is a conjecture about the distribution of the zeros of s . It is one of the most important open problems of contemporary mathematics ; a $1,000,000 prize has been offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute for a proof. Most mathematicians believe the Riemann hypothesis to be true.
s ) is defined for all complex numbers s s s s = -6, ... The Riemann hypothesis is concerned with the non-trivial zeros, and states that:
The real part of any non-trivial zero of the Riemann zeta function is 1/2.

Thus the non-trivial zeros should lie on the so-called critical line it with t a real number and i the imaginary unit
This traditional formulation obscures somewhat the true importance of the conjecture. The zeta function has a deep connection to the distribution of prime numbers and Helge von Koch proved in that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the following considerable strengthening of the prime number theorem
x ) is the prime-counting function , ln( x ) is the natural logarithm of x , and the O-notation is the Landau symbol
The zeros of the Riemann zeta function and the prime numbers satisfy a certain duality property, known as the

Abstract
Riemann Hypothesis on the nontrivial zeros of the zeta-function was a by-product in B.Riemann's attempt to solve a problem in number theory. Since Riemann's paper of 1859 the attitude of mathematicians to this area has changed very much. The problem attempted by B.Riemann was solved in 1896 by J.S.Hadamard and Ch.J. de la Vallee-Poussin (the prime number theorem). However the by-product has turned into one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. It has turned out to be equivalent to unsolved problems in many areas of mathematics. We study space complexity for the weak recognition of languages. If L(n) is a small function, there can be languages A such that A is weakly recognized in deterministic space L(n) but the complement language of A is not. The language PERFECT_SQUARES needs deterministic space

The toolkits covering a set of brief synopsis of Infinite series and the Euler identity should be useful to the lay (but Mathematically capable) reader, but the appendix on the De Brandes proof is rather obscure.

How I proved the Riemann Hypothesis
The trouble with this modern age is that every few weeks someone goes and solves a problem that's been baffling Mathmos for centuries. Sometimes it's the Four Colour Problem, sometimes it's Fermat's Last Theorem, sometimes it's "Why are the Graph Theory books all miscatalogued?" You know how it is in households the length and breadth of the country, the following conversation takes place over breakfast: "Well, I've been telling them it would happen for years, but they wouldn't believe me. 'It was claimed yesterday that four colours suffice to colour any map on the plane. Mrs Thatcher has promised to reduce this to three by 1995. In the House of Commons, Mr Dennis Skinner was suspended for saying "Poo-poo."'" "Yes, dear. Did they explain how the theorem is proved?" "Yes 'The intimate secrets of Appel and Haken revealed Sexy underwear in four colours to be won - see pages 6,7,8,9.' I think the Times has gone downhill a bit recently." Time was running out and I had to decide quickly: if I wanted to make my name, should I prove Goldbach's conjecture, or the Riemann hypothesis? After some thought I decided: I'd make a serious attempt at cracking the Riemann hypothesis, and then, if it came out by lunchtime, I'd do Goldbach over tea.

Abstract.
We outline a proof that if the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis holds, then every odd number above is a sum of three prime numbers. The proof involves an asymptotic theorem covering all but a finite number of cases, an intermediate lemma, and an extensive computation.

Riemann's approximation to pi(x) The Prime Number Theorem states that pi(x) ~ Li(x). This is a fair enough approximation, but it has fairly large error terms. The end result of Riemann's paper on pi(x) was to narrow this error term down significantly. Of course the validity of this result is pending the proof that all zeroes lie on the critical line. Although this is not the precise method Riemann used, it covers his general flow. We begin by defining a jump function S(x) as a function with an unusual technique for counting primes and prime powers. S(x) = +1 if x is prime +1/n if x is p n Riemann then determined a formula relating S(x) to pi(x): This result is obvious - S(x) is the sum of the primes to x, plus 1/2 the sum of the number of prime squares, which is identical to pi(x ), and so on. We require this equation with pi(x) as the main term, so we apply the Mobius Inversion formula: divides n = 1 if n is square-free with an even number of prime factors = -1 if n is square-free with an odd number of prime factors Making the exchange gives: The next step is to make a substitution for S(x). S(X) can be analytically defined (via a lengthy process) as:

Riemann's Hypothesis Riemann wrote a paper in 1859 on 'On the Number of Prime Numbers less than a Given Quantity' in which Riemann drastically reduced the magnitude of errors in calculating pi(x), the number of primes less than or equal to x.
In this paper, Riemann analytically continues Euler's Zeta function, and discovers the remarkable phenomena that all of the zeroes lie in the complex plane with real part 1/2, although Riemann offers no proof. This is known as Riemann's Hypothesis.
The line s=1/2 is called the critical line.
It has been computationally validated for the first 10 zeroes.
Euler Zeta function The Euler Zeta function is defined as the sum of 1/n s for real s>1. This sum diverges for s <=1, and so is not defined for this range.
Riemann's Zeta function extends the Euler Zeta function into the entire complex plane, except for a pole at s=1.
