The Riemann Hypothesis
millennium prize problems / the riemann hypothesis problem Some numbers have the special property that they cannot be expressed as the product of two smaller numbers, e.g., 2, 3, 5, 7, etc. Such numbers are called prime numbers, and they play an important role, both in pure mathematics and its applications. The distribution of such prime numbers among all natural numbers does not follow any regular pattern, however the German mathematician G.F.B. Riemann (1826 – 1866) observed that the frequency of prime numbers is very closely related to the behavior of an elaborate function “ z (s)” called the Riemann Zeta function . The Riemann hypothesis asserts that all interesting solutions of the equation z (s) = lie on a straight line. This has been checked for the first 1,500,000,000 solutions. A proof that it is true for every interesting solution would shed light on many of the mysteries surrounding the distribution of prime numbers. Mathematical Description authored by Enrico Bombieri

The Riemann hypothesis , first formulated by Bernhard Riemann in , is a conjecture about the distribution of the zeros of s . It is one of the most important open problems of contemporary mathematics ; a $1,000,000 prize has been offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute for a proof. Most mathematicians believe the Riemann hypothesis to be true. ( J. E. Littlewood and Atle Selberg have been reported as sceptical.) s ) is defined for all complex numbers s s s s = -6, ... The Riemann hypothesis is concerned with the non-trivial zeros, and states that:
The real part of any non-trivial zero of the Riemann zeta function is 1/2.
Thus the non-trivial zeros should lie on the so-called critical line it with t a real number and i the imaginary unit This traditional formulation obscures somewhat the true importance of the conjecture. The zeta function has a deep connection to the distribution of prime numbers and Helge von Koch proved in that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to the following considerable strengthening of the prime number theorem x ) is the prime-counting function , ln( x ) is the natural logarithm of x , and the O-notation is the Landau symbol The zeros of the Riemann zeta function and the prime numbers satisfy a certain duality property, known as the

The Riemann A.I Institute ‘Introduction to the Riemann hypothesis’ by Marc Geddes The Riemann hypothesis is the greatest unsolved problem in mathematics. Bernhard Riemann was a German mathematician who lived from 1826-1866. In was in 1859 that he first stated the hypothesis which bears his name. Since that time, the best mathematicians in the world have tried to failed to prove (or disproof) it. Over nearly 150 years of efforts, the legend of the Riemann hypothesis grew and so did the interest and obsession of the mathematical community. On May 24th, 2000 , the Clay Mathematics Institute announced a prize of $ US 1 million for proving the hypothesis. Then the hypothesis started to enter popular consciousness with the publication of several popular books, such as the excellent 'Dr Riemann's Zeros' by Karl Sabbagh (2002, Atlantic Books). Polish-American mathematician Henryk Iwaniec said about the Riemann hypothesis: ‘There are a whole lot of things combined. Great scholars have tried it; your own perception that this is fundamental; the beauty and difficulty; and connections with so many areas. I think it is right to be named as the number one unsolved problem in mathematics.'

  • The method of the analytic continuation of the function given on a part of the boundary into the whole domain is applied to the Riemann hypothesis on the Zeta function zeros. Comprehensive numerical experiments have been performed with the Mathematica V3.0.The computational approach confirmed the Riemann hypothesis.

    sunday entertainment: the Riemann Hypothesis
Working on some stuff on n-dimensional topologies I remembered the Riemann Hypothesis. I'm not sure when I first read about it... but it keeps popping up in my head (simply because it's a challengenot that I have any delusions that I can actually solve it! :)). So as a way of relaxing a bit from work, here's some background on that. Not that it's something useful, but it should be at least entertaining. A couple of years ago, a $1,000,000 prize was created for whoever came up with the proof. What I didn't know was that they actually had seven "millenium prize problems" of which the Riemann Hypothesis was one. Here is the list of all seven problems. One million per proof. Not bad! Going back to the Riemann Hypothesis. Proving it would be interesting for number theory and the distribution of prime numbers, but it would have no direct practical applications whatsoever. Otherwise, I can see the headlines (maybe for The Onion UN Security Council Declares Understanding the Distribution of Prime Numbers is Priority One - Troops To Be Deployed in the Real Region of C with R > 1 - President declares "we will hunt down these prime number folks and we will characterize them. If you ask me, there's something evil about a number being divisible only by itself and one."

Let q be a power of a prime p. We prove an assertion of Carlitz which takes q as parameter. Diaz-Vargas' proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for the Goss zeta function for F_p[T] depends on his verification of Carlitz's assertion for the specific case q = p. Our proof of the general case allows us to extend Diaz-Vargas' proof to F_q[T].

University of Wisconsin To one unacquainted with number theory, we might explain our interest in the zeroes of the zeta function by saying that we can thereby estimate the error incurred by using logarithm integral to count the primes up to a given bound. As a practical matter, however, we know enough about these zeroes that numerical estimates for prime number sums, accurate enough for most purposes, can be easily obtained. There are other situations in computational number theory, though, where it seems impossible to obtain results that come close to empirical data without assuming the Riemann hypothesis or one of its generalizations. One example is the least witness required to prove a number composite using the strong pseudoprime test, and there are many others. For this reason, Riemann hypotheses have now become a standard tool of the algorithm designer. This talk will provide an introduction to and survey of these matters.

The results of this paper rely heavily on the work of Leonhard Euler of a century earlier. Most of the relevant work of Euler is accessible to undergraduates who have completed a year of Calculus." Gary Towsley received his math Ph.D. at the University of Rochester and now teaches at SUNY, Geneseo. Leaves the reader somewhat disappointed. I picked up this book with great expectations, having read the publisher's publicity. To be frank, I was left disappointed. The book tells the reader very little about the wonderful and mysterious character of the Riemann hypothesis and leaves both mathematical novices and those who know about the intricacies of higher Mathematics dissatisfied. This is indeed a pity! Having said this, Mr Sabbagh's story is eminently readable and enlightening. The book has many...
