Gaia Hypothesis
This will serve as an introduction to the Gaia hypothesis;
It is a review (published in 1989) of James Lovelock's The Ages of Gaia
What is the hypothesis of Gaia ? Stated simply, the idea is that we may have discovered a living being bigger, more ancient, and more complex than anything from our wildest dreams. That being, called Gaia, is the Earth. More precisely: that about one billion years after it's formation, our planet was occupied by a meta-life form which began an ongoing process of transforming this planet into its own substance. All the life forms of the planet are part of Gaia. In a way analogous to the myriad different cell colonies which make up our organs and bodies, the life forms of earth in their diversity coevolve and contribute interactively to produce and sustain the optimal conditions for the growth and prosperity not of themselves, but of the larger whole, Gaia. That the very makeup of the atmosphere, seas, and terrestrial crust is the result of radical interventions carried out by Gaia through the evolving diversity of living creatures. Encountering the Earth from space, a witness would know immediately that the planet was alive. The atmosphere would give it away. The atmospheric compositions of our sister planets, venus and mars, are: 95-96% carbon dioxide, 3-4% nitrogen, with traces of oxygen, argon and methane. The earth's atmosphere at present is 79% nitrogen, 21% oxygen with traces of carbon dioxide, methane and argon. The difference is Gaia, which transforms the outer layer of the planet into environments suitable to its further growth. For example, bacteria and photosynthetic algae began some 2.8 billions of years ago extracting the carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere, setting the stage for larger and more energetic creatures powered by combustion, including, ultimately, ourselves.

The Critical Period Hypothesis
The crticial period hypothesis in essence contends that the ability to learn a language is limited to the years before puberty after which, as a result of neurological changes in the brain (see the impact of neglect on neurological development ), the ability is lost.

Language acquisition after return to civilisation
The ability of feral children to learn language on their return to human society is very varied. For most feral children from history, we don't have enough information to judge exactly how much language, if any, they might have been able to learn, were they taught properly. For some children, the historical records don't even mention whether or not they could talk when they were found, presumably because the assumption is that they clearly wouldn't have been able to. Some children (see Isabelle ) acquire normal language ability, but only if found before the onset of puberty. Her progress was dramatic: in two years she covered the stages of learning that usually take six years. Others, such as

Fermi's Paradox and the Preparation for Contact Hypothesis The famous physicist, Enrico Fermi, was referring to such an argument when he asked: "Where are they?" Since he was a prominent (and very smart) scientist, his simple question has been given a duly profound name: Fermi's paradox. The paradox is resolved, of course, if the answer is: "Well, they are already here!" (and possibly have been for a very long time and perhaps have even been involved in the rather sudden emergence of homo sapiens sapiens, but that may be over the top, so ignore that last conjecture if it is too much, though I seem to recall that even Sagan considered that possibility at some point). Their being here but surreptitiously would answer Fermi and at the same time address a second common objection to the UFO phenomenon by scientists: that the observations indicate such utterly nonsensical, bizarre behaviour that it just could not possibly be real. Intelligent visitors just would not pull such disreputable antics as have been reported. It is tempting to argue, as some do, that since the visitors are not behaving like proper alien explorers, there are no visitors in the first place. (For some reason this logic brings to mind Galileo attempting to get the Cardinals to look through his telescope.) To counter this argument, I would like to suggest one possible rationale that might, in principle at least (no real world guarantees), account for the widespread, disjoint kind of behavior that the UFO phenomenon has manifested over 50 years. The reason for proposing this "preparation for contact hypothesis" (which is certainly no original idea of mine) is simply to facilitate a "suspension of disbelief" so that the UFO evidence can be confronted on its own terms without the mental roadblock that the phenomenon violates all common sense, or more precisely the common sense of modern western society, and that of the scientific community in particular, and hence cannot be real.

HYPOTHESIS
HYPOTHESIS The recognition of the importance of hypotheses has led to various attempts at drawing up exact rules for their formation, but logicians are generally agreed that only very elementary principles can be laid down. Thus a hypothesis must contain nothing which is at variance with known facts or principles: The adjective hypothetical is used, in the same sense, both loosely in contradistinction to real or actual, and technically in the phrases hypothetical judgment and hypothetical syllogism. (See LoGIc and SYLLOGISM.) See Naville, La Logique de lhypoth~se (1880), and textbooks of logic, e.g. those of Jevons, Bosanquet, Joseph; Liebmann, Der Klimax d. T/ieorjen. HYPOTHEC HYPOTRACHELIUM

A Web Site for the Two Gospel hypothesis.
http://www.colby.edu/rel/2gh/
A Web Site for the Two Gospel Hypothesis The Two Gospel Hypothesis (2GH), formerly known as the Griesbach Hypothesis, presents a comprehensive solution to the Synoptic Problem. First given its name by Bernard Orchard, the Two Gospel Hypothesis proposes that the Gospel of Matthew was the earliest gospel, that the author of the Gospel of Luke used the Gospel of Matthew as a source, and that the author of the Gospel of Mark wrote using both the Gospels of Matthew and Luke as sources. This page has been created to provide interested parties with basic information about this solution and its advantages. Links to detailed evidence and work in progress will be provided for those who wish to explore the solution further. We strongly recommend that you set your browser to view these pages at "full screen" configuration.

The Simulation Argument
Are You Living In a Computer Simulation?
Nick Bostrom, PhD
Philosophy Faculty, Oxford University
This website features scholarly investigations into the idea that you might currently be literally living in a computer simulation, running on a computer built by some advanced civilization. Films like The Matrix and novels like Greg Egan's Permutation City have explored the idea that we might be living in virtual reality. But what evidence is there for or against this hypothesis? And what are its implications? The original paper featured here, "Are You Living in Computer Simulation?", presents a striking argument showing that we should take the simulation-hypothesis seriously indeed, and that if we deny it then we are committed to surprising predictions about the future possibilities for our species. Note : The paper has attracted a huge amount of attention, both from academic philosophers and scientists and from the more general audience; it's also been widely covered in the media. Rather than attempting to provide a comprehensive set of links to all this, I have selected here a few of the most substantial contributions and commentaries. (For the rest, there is always Google.) I try to do my best to reply to email enquiries, but occasionally the volume just gets too big; so my apologies in advance if you write and I fail to get back. - N.B.

Hypothesis Test Null Hypothesis Alternative Hypothesis Simple Hypothesis ... Back to Main Contents Hypothesis Test Setting up and testing hypotheses is an essential part of statistical inference. In order to formulate such a test, usually some theory has been put forward, either because it is believed to be true or because it is to be used as a basis for argument, but has not been proved, for example, claiming that a new drug is better than the current drug for treatment of the same symptoms. , against the alternative hypothesis, denoted H . These two competing claims / hypotheses are not however treated on an equal basis, special consideration is given to the null hypothesis. We have two common situations: 1. The experiment has been carried out in an attempt to disprove or reject a particular hypothesis, the null hypothesis, thus we give that one priority so it cannot be rejected unless the evidence against it is sufficiently strong. For example, H : there is no difference in taste between coke and diet coke against H : there is a difference.

Abed, Riadh T The sexual competition hypothesis for eating disorders British Journal of Medical Psychology Full text available as:

Abstract
A hypothesis is presented for eating disorders that contends that these syndromes together with the phenomenon of the pursuit of thinness are manifestations of female intra-sexual competition. It is argued that the present-day environment of Western coutries presnts a range of conditions that have led to the overactivation or disruption of the archaic female sexual strategy of maximising 'mate value'. The hypothesis deals with the ultimate level of causation and is therefore compatible with a range of theories dealing with the proximate level of causation. The Two Source Hypothesis
Abstract
Mark was a source for Matthew and Luke, both of whom also independently used a now lost sayings source called Q.
Overview
The Two Source Hypothesis ( ) has been the predominant source theory for the synoptic problem for almost a century and half. Originally conceived in Germany by Ch. H. Weisse in 1838, the came to dominate German protestant scholarship after the fall of the Tübingen school with H. J. Holtzmann's endorsement of a related variant in 1863. In the latter part of the 19th century, the Oxford School brought the to English scholarship, culminating in B. H. Streeter's 1924 treatment of the synoptic problem. Now, the commands the support of most biblical critics from all continents and denominations. The derives its name from its postulation of two main sources for the synoptic gospels: a narrative source for the triple tradition and a sayings source for the double tradition. The triple tradition comprises the subject matter jointly related by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Generally, the triple tradition is characterized by substantial agreements in arrangement and wording among all three gospels with frequent agreements between Mark and Matthew against Luke and between Mark and Luke against Matthew, but a near absence of agreements of Matthew and Luke against Mark. The

I do not think that the zero can have other meaning than nothing. In other words we cannot use the zero in a representation or analyzes physical modelling matter ; because even if this matter changed form through the filter of our perception, nothing enables us to say that it does not exist any more. I think that to believe it or write it using the zero is an error. Andre p.j.
