Various conjectures follow, each successively stronger than the last. Virtually Haken. Waldhausen [give reference] conjectured that: Conjecture 5. V I R T U A L L Y H A K E N C O N J E C T U R E Every closed, irreducible, orientable 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group is finitely covered by a Haken manifold. Conjecture 6. P O S I T I V E V I R T U A L B E T T I N U M B E R C O N J E C T U R E Every closed, irreducible, orientable 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group is finitely covered by a manifold with positive first Betti number. Remark It seems a common belief that this conjecture is not much stronger than the above conjecture. Note that positive first Betti number implies Haken-ness: Having positive first Betti number means the fundamental group has infinite abelianization, and so has a non-trivial representation into the integers, which in turn is the fundamental group of the circle. Since the circle is a Eilenberg-MacLane space, this representation is induced by a continuous mapping. We can homotope to ensure the map is generic (general position/transverse/etc.) and so the inverse image of a point p is a surface. This surface is non-separating; for, pick a loop that maps to a generator of

This document won't teach you how to do proofs, but if you already have some idea on that, then it will tell you how to use cadiz to help find proofs. It assumes that you know the Z notation. You should already be familiar with interacting with cadiz, but a short review is given here.

A sequent consists of generic parameters, declarations, antecedent predicates, and consequent predicates. A sequent expresses the conjecture that the conjunction of the antecedents implies the disjunction of the consequents. In the following example, there is one generic parameter ( PERSON ), three declarations ( p and the two relations), three antecedent predicates, and one consequent predicate. Topic p knows CADiZ_interface, p knows Z p knows CADiZ_interface p can_do PROOF ? p can_do PROOF The syntax of a sequent permits a name to be associated with a sequent. The symbol separating the antecedents from the consequents ( ) is called the turnstile A sequent is proven (i.e. a conjecture is shown to be a

The Kac-Weisfeiler Conjectures
According to the classical representation theory of complex Lie algebras, a finite-dimensional irreducible module over a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra is completely determined by its so-called highest weight. In particular, the dimension of can be computed by means of Weyl's dimension formula. The example already shows that irreducible modules may occur in any dimension. If is a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic , then the representation theory of is not nearly as well understood. Weyl's Theorem on the complete reducibility of finite-dimensional modules fails in this context, and the dimensions of the irreducible -modules are not known in general. One distinctive feature of modular representation theory is the existence of an upper bound for the dimensions of irreducible -modules. This aspect, as well as other phenomena, rests on the fact that the center of universal enveloping algebra contains a polynomial ring in variables over which is a finite module. The algebra

Guy Henniart
Univ. of Paris XI, France It was recently proved that every elliptic curve over Q is modular. That result can be seen as a special case of an outstanding set of conjectures, due to R.P. Langlands. The most elementary result of this kind is the reciprocity law of Gauss. In general, the conjectures say roughly the following : if you consider a system of polynomial equations (in several variables) with integer coefficients, and you compute the number of solutions modulo a prime number p, then when p varies that number exhibits a regularity which can be expressed by harmonic analysis via devices named L-functions, which generalize Riemann's zeta function. Gauss' reciprocity law concerns the equation X -n where n is an integer. Modulo a prime number p not dividing n, that equation has or 2 solutions. The reciprocity law implies that the number of solutions only depends on congruences on p modulo 4n, which is rather surprising. Since Gauss such a reciprocity result has been greatly generalized. If for example we consider a polynomial P irreducible in

Graded associative algebras and Grothendieck Standard Conjectures
This paper is concerned with Grothendieck's standard conjectures on algebraic cycles, introduced independently by Grothendieck and Bombieri to explain the Weil conjectures on the zeta-function of algebraic varieties. We prove that the semisimplicity of the algebra of algebraic correspondences A(X) of a projective irreducible smooth variety X implies the standard conjecture of Lefschetz type for X. It was proved by U. Jannsen that the algebra A(X) is semisimple when the numerical and homological equivalences of algebraic cycles on X are the same. Thus, with Jannsen's theorem our result asserts that the standard conjecture of Lefschetz type follows from Grothendieck's conjecture about the equality of the numerical and homological equivalences. This was known before only in the presence of the standard conjecture of Hodge type. (This paper has appeared in Invent. Math. 128 (1997), 201206) O. N. Smirnov

Home Topic Index Articles Support ... Links Times Watch for May 30, 2003 We’re Sure She Was Columnist Maureen Dowd was “happy” to correct her May 14 distortion of a Bush quote, Paul Colford writes in his New York Daily News column Friday. “‘It was Ms. Dowd's decision’ to run Bush's comment in full [in her Wednesday column ], a Times spokeswoman said. ‘Her intention was not to distort the meaning of the quote. She had received a couple of complaints and was happy to put in the entire quote to satisfy readers who felt it was too truncated.’” Dowd’s May 28 column indeed contains Bush’s quote in full: "Al Qaeda is on the run. That group of terrorists who attacked our country is slowly but surely being decimated. Right now, about half of all the top Al Qaeda operatives are either jailed or dead. In either case, they're not a problem anymore." Compare that to Dowd’s May 14 column, in which she leaves off the third sentence of Bush’s quote and the first three words of the fourth to make Bush look naive: “Busy chasing off Saddam, the president and vice president had told us that Al Qaeda was spent. ‘Al Qaeda is on the run,’ President Bush said last week. ‘That group of terrorists who attacked our country is slowly but surely being decimated…They're not a problem anymore.’” From the full quote, it’s clear that Bush was in no way saying Al Qaeda was spent, and he certainly didn’t say Al Qaeda was “not a problem anymore.”

One Way Mirror
( For those that missed it, I posted a last minute discussion on the form factor of tablets on Thanksgiving. Go take a look if you get a chance. ) A couple of weeks ago, we talked about platform standards . While there was some debate over how much or how little we should use standards, there seemed to be little debate over the fact that Lotus Notes sucks What’s interesting is that I have been forced to use Notes by one organization or another since version 4.6. I now use Notes 6 and find the interface more slick and shiny. Some of the usability issues have definitely been improved upon. Folder management, for example, can finally be handled (gasp) directly in the folder view. Contrast to that, Notes still uses the ambiguous icons in their “properties” windows. In addition, the window has no obvious action for confirming the changes made to the window. There are no OK and Cancel buttons! Blasphemous! IBM and Lotus are illustrating a very classic example of why usability is important up front. Going on the assumption that Lotus wants to improve the usability of their flagship product, they face a catch-22 situation. On one hand, they’d love to dispel the “Notes sucks” perceptions and in doing so, gain some new users. On the other hand, those who finally managed to learn the program have gone through the pain of learning the quirks and changing the interface would frustrate these veterans.

sur le circuit du Cavalier
Solution du problème de Honaker - Q(9) = 22 Problème de Honaker :
