Y ou can raise your test scores!

How? By using a program that helps you identify your weakest knowledge skills and then helps you strengthen them. This simple concept is at the core of our Coach Series for the SAT, PSAT or ACT.
Higher test scores are only attainable when your knowledge, skills and confidence are brought to their peak.
Think about it. If you know which skill areas are the weakest, you can then work to improve yourself in those areas, and you'll have a far better chance to reach your full potential for higher scores.
SAT, PSAT, or ACT scores represent an important measure of your academic progress and capability, and are a significant factor in gaining admission to the college or university of your choice.
Higher scores also serve as a springboard enabling you to attract and qualify for needed scholarship money.

When I took the ACT years ago, we didn't have a clue about what would be covered, or how it would be presented. Now, teens have many tools to choose from, and this program is one of the best! I bet you thought what you know was the most important aspect of taking these testsWRONG! As in Jeopardy, it's not the person who knows the most stuff necessarily, but the person who has the quickest reflexes and can calculate the odds on whether guessing is a good idea or not. Not only are academic skills important here, but knowing the best strategies for narrowing down the possible answers, what information is really important in a paragraph, and sundry other tips that most people are not aware of. Kids need to take one of the practice tests available, in order to compare the results with a later test reflecting their new-found test-taking skills. Users can list their goals, and the program will design a study plan for them. The tutorials are video-clips of real teens, presented in a no-nonsense manner with a touch of humor, that is sure to appeal to teens. The main parts of each tests are covered, as well as basic strategies and college information.

I am interested in SAT/PSAT/ACT..... Question #76:
  • Facts about the ACT.
Answer #76:
  • ACT, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides educational services to students and their parents, to high schools and colleges, to professional associations and government agencies, and to business and industry. The ACT Assessment Program, the most widely accepted college entrance and placement exam in the world, contains four curriculum-based tests that measure academic achievement in the areas of:
    • English (75 items, 45 minutes)
    • Mathematics (60 items, 60 minutes)
    • Reading (40 items, 35 minutes)
    • Natural sciences (40 items, 35 minutes)
These tests, offered five times a year (six in a few locations), are based on and oriented toward the major areas of secondary and post-secondary instructional programs. The ACT Assessment offers a comprehensive way for high school students to demonstrate to the colleges and universities of their choice that they can become successful college students. The fundamental idea behind these four tests is that the best way to measure a student's preparedness for college is to measure as directly as possible the knowledge and skills students will need in that setting.

The EDUFAX Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Archive
I am interested in SAT/PSAT/ACT..... Question #116:
  • I didn't get a great score on my ACT. What do I need to do to get into the college of my choice?
Answer #116:
  • Did you do any preparation before you took the ACT?
  • Do you know what sections gave you trouble?
Before you take the test again, you should find someone to tutor you in the areas where you need help. If you cannot afford a professional tutor, you can find a peer tutor or use a computer program or simply take a number of practice tests in a prep book and see what types of problems are giving you difficulty. Once you know where you need help, ask one of your teachers to work with you to clear up some of the problems that have been affecting your score.
You might also try the SAT. Some students do better on one test than the other, but everyone does better on both tests if they prepare. You should never approach standardized testing without knowing about the format and content of the test, the expectations for the levels of knowledge you need, and an understanding of how to pace your work so that you can accomplish the maximum in the time allotted.
You can find the best deals on the 'Net for PSAT/SAT/ACT prep software programs and tutorials through the EDUFAX site
It is also possible that you have some learning differences which make standardized testing difficult for you. If there is a serious discrepancy between the level of your classroom work and the level of your standardized test scores, you should speak with your guidance counselor about having an educational evaluation.

The two major college admissions tests are the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) developed for the College Board by Educational Testing Service, and the American College Testing Program Assessment (ACT). Students may want to take both examinations in order to increase their flexibility in applying to college. Some colleges will accept the score from either test; other colleges will require one or the other. Students should take the SAT or ACT test at least once in the junior year. Ask the school or the Education Specialist in your Urban League affiliate for information on fee waivers. The PSAT serves two important functions in its own right. First, PSAT scores and grades are used to identify students who will receive National Negro Merit Scholarship and scholarships from the National Hispanic Scholars Awards Program. Second, they are used, along with other criteria, to qualify students who wish to be considered for appointment to military academies.

Trial runs really do no harm; and, likely you will develop skills and confidence. Q: What tests will I be required to take for admission, and when should I take them?
Ans: Students need to be aware that many colleges and universities give applicants the option of reporting scores from either of two testing programs - the ACT or the SAT I. However, applicants need to be aware that some institutions may require or have a stated preference for one test or the other. Following are brief descriptions of each program. Test FAQs Frequently asked questions about
    ACT SAT PSAT
We have included a number of questions we frequently get about the main standardized tests students take as they prepare for college. If you would like us to address additional questions on this page, please let us know by calling or sending us e-mail . All of these tests are typically taken during the junior year.
    ACT
Who should take the ACT assessment? When do students usually take the ACT exam? How may times are students allowed to take the ACT? What would be the reason for retaking the ACT? ... How high does the ACT score have to be in order to be in serious contention for academic scholarships? Q: Who should take the ACT assessment? A : The ACT is required by most four-year institutions in the Midwest. It is also accepted (but not necessarily preferred) by most four-year institutions throughout the United States. Colleges on the east and west coasts generally prefer the SAT exam for admissions purposes. Students planning on attending a community college (e.g. Kirkwood Community College) do not necessarily need to take the ACT. Kirkwood, for example, uses its own tests to advise students on course selection. These tests take half the time of an ACT and are administered free to the prospective student numerous times throught the year. Students should see their counselor if they have any questions as to whether or not they need to take the ACT.
