" John Henry Cardinal Newman You thought the SAT was the last you'd see of standardized tests? Hah! Think again. The MCAT is required by almost every U.S. medical school. (Johns Hopkins is a notable exception that comes to mind.) You've got to get used to these standardized tests. You'll be taking them for the rest of your career. Which isn't that reassuring, given the recent MCAT snafu for which many students had to retake the mcat at the next regular administration... The exam can be a frightening experience. You'll have this odd sort of vague sense of feeling like you're in jail. The proctor speaks at you in harsh tones, your identification is repeatedly checked, and you are actually fingerprinted. Try to keep calm in the face of this. Take lots of slow, deep breaths if you're feeling too tense. Say a prayer if you're religious. If you have an understanding significant other, ask them to walk you to the exam. (Not recommended for rocky relationships!) If you can be prepared enough to take the exam in the Fall before your year of application, you might want to do this. MCAT Medical College Admission Test The MCAT is a test to help admission committees predict how successful their applicants will be in medical school. In addition, the MCAT can be used to help applicants who are not accepted to medical school determine the academic areas in which they may need further study. The extent to which test results are used in admission decisions varies from one medical school to another. The MCAT assesses mastery of basic concepts in biology, chemistry (general and organic), and physics; facility with scientific problem solving and critical thinking; and writing skills. The skills and concepts tested by the MCAT are those identified by physicians and medical educators as prerequisite for the practice of medicine. Medical school faculty hope that testing for these skills on the MCAT will encourage undergraduates with broad educational backgrounds to consider careers in the health professions and will stimulate premedical students to investigate a wide variety of course offerings outside the natural sciences. The test begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 5:30 p.m. with two ten-minute breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and a one-hour lunch break. Before I begin I feel you should know a little about me. My name is Cathy. On the internet, in all areas I use the name M-Cat. If you knew me in real life, I would be the last person you would willingly take a second look at. As a person I have to describe myself as average . I am 40, soon to be 41. I am a mother and a wife and a working woman. Yes, for the 90's, really average. That is, until you get to know me and find out a few of my "secrets". At that point I am anything but average. I live what I like to call a dual existance. On the outside you can see me and I will look like any other woman of my situation. I have my ups and downs and you can see them in my expressions. On the inside is a whole other story. I am part of a community that is best described as modified. In other words, what I have under the trappings of clothing, I wear an assortment of rings and tattoos. Since you all should know what a tattoo is I see no need to go into detail about that but what you may not understand is that the rings are nothing like the usual kind you would picture a woman of my age to wear. Yes, I have the standard finger rings in a variety of colors and materials but the vast majority of my rings are attached by piercing certain parts of my body with a needle. I can assure you that I am not the only one who practices this art as a method of decorating my body, nor am I the oldest, but neither can I call myself an extremist.
