MCAT Test Advice
Our advice for the MCAT test covers the following topics:
Background
The MCAT will be the single most important test that you will take up to this point of your career. Most medical schools have a minimum MCAT score for acceptance. Students are also partially ranked by admissions committees on the basis of this exam score. From the admissions committees' point of view, the MCAT is the only way to objectively compare you to applicants from other undergraduate schools. It deserves to be treated with at least the same amount of preparation that you would use to prepare for any other test. Far too many students don't bother to prepare for this important exam and they cite various reasons such as lack of time and the perceived impossibility of reviewing 4 one-year science courses: biology, physics, chemistry, and organic chemistry. (Introductory calculus is not tested although some med schools prefer their applicants to have a firm grasp of calculus. Joint MD/PhD applicants in particular should certainly have a thorough understanding of calculus.)

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
Believe it or not, the MCAT is not "just" a science test, it's a thinking evaluation that medical schools use to select students they feel will complete the rigorous program. Every section judges analytical reasoning, abstract thinking, and problem-solving skills. the point is to encourage undergrads interested in medicine to pursue broad studies in the humanities, social and natural sciences. It's a prerequisite for almost all US medical schools. In addition, potential physicians must have an understanding of physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology. The test involves four and three-quarter hours of multiple choice questions in verbal reasoning, physical science and biological science, scored on a 1-15 scale; and a one-hour writing sample, scored on a scale of J (lowest) to T (highest). Count on almost six hours with administrative chores. Successful MCAT takers must exhibit superior reading and writing skills, a comprehensive understanding of fundamental science concepts and the ability to apply those concepts in experimental or theoretical contexts. The "integrated-style" format relates the majority of questions to previous reading passages.

MCAT Writing Sample
The writing sample consists of two essays each one completed in a timed 30 minute session. Each essay is a response to a given statement, for example, "True leadership leads by example rather than by command". Your response will be graded by how well you respond to three tasks:
  • Task One: Thesis Provide your interpretation or explanation of the statement.
  • Task Two: Antithesis Offer a concrete example that illustrates a point directly opposite to the one expressed or implied by the statement.
  • Task Three: Conflict Resolution Explain how the conflict between the viewpoint expressed in the statement and the viewpoint described in the second task might be resolved.
AAMC has published a list of possible test statements for use in 2000. Two graders will score your essay independently on a 1 to 6 point scale (see below). If these scores differ by more than 1 point, a third (senior) grader determines the score. Score Explanation Fulfills all three tasks; major ideas are substantially developed; shows clarity, depth and complexity of thought; uses language in a sophisticated manner. Fulfills all three tasks; major ideas are well developed; shows clarity of thought, with some depth or complexity; demonstrates strong control of vocabulary and sentence structure.

66. Columbia Review - All About The MCAT
The mcat is designed to assess your mastery of basic skills that are felt to be prerequisite for the successful completion of medical school.
http://www.columbiareview.com/htdocs_v5/mcat.html

The MCAT is designed to assess your mastery of basic skills that are felt to be prerequisite for the successful completion of medical school. The exam changed format starting in April 1991. The MCAT is now a 5.75 hour exam divided into four general sections: Section # of Questions Time (min.) Physical Sciences Verbal Reasoning Writing Sample Biological Sciences The first section of the MCAT is the Physical Sciences section. This section is composed of 77 multiple choice questions that test reasoning skills in physics and general chemistry. Sixty-two of the questions are based on problem sets, each about 250 words in length, that describe a situation or science problem. The section contains about 10 of these problem sets, where each set contains 5-10 questions. An additional 15 questions will be given that are independent of any problem set or any other question. Questions are designed to test your science knowledge and problem solving ability in physics and general chemistry. You are expected to be familiar with graphical and tabular analysis. The passages accompanying each problem set will fall into one of four general types: informational presentation, problem solving, research study, or persuasive argument. Time allotted for answering all 77 questions will be 100 minutes. A ten minute break will then be given. The Verbal Reasoning section is designed to assess your ability to understand and evaluate information in arguments contained in prose texts. The section consists of 9 passages, each 500-600 words in length, taken from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Each passage will be followed by 6-10 questions. Questions are designed to measure performance in four areas: comprehension, evaluation, application, and incorporation of new information. Eighty-five minutes will be allotted for completion of this section. A 60 minute lunch break follows this section.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in cooperation with its member U.S. medical schools. The MCAT assesses mastery of basic concepts in biology, chemistry (general and organic), and physics; facility with scientific problem solving and critical thinking; and writing skills. The skills and concepts tested by the MCAT are those identified by physicians and medical educators as prerequisite for the practice of medicine. Medical school faculty hope that testing for these skills on the MCAT will encourage undergraduates with broad educational backgrounds to consider careers in the health professions and will stimulate premedical students to investigate a wide variety of course offerings outside the natural sciences. The MCAT is given in April and August of each year at established test centers. In any one year, a candidate may test only once in April and once in August. There is no provision for makeup tests. On the Test Date: Candidates must report to the test center no later than 8:00 AM, local time. The overall length of the test day is approximately nine and one-half hours. The exam ends at approximately 5:30 PM.

Learning More About the MCAT
Information on this page is provided by Kaptest.com So you wanna be a doctor? As you may know, you'll need to complete a few required premedical classes in order to have your application considered. And you'll also be tackling that invigorating (grueling?) rite of passage into the medical field known as the MCAT (pronounced em-cat). The Medical College Admission Test is a full-day standardized exam taken by nearly all applicants to medical school. That's right, your doctor almost certainly took the MCAT. (Why not ask her about it on your next visit? Most docs love to share war stories from their student days). As standardized tests go, it is among the most demanding, both because of the critical thinking ability it demands and the science knowledge it assumes. But fear not! A good MCAT score is definitely attainable with a little planning and preparation. To get started, browse this introduction to the test you'll be taking if you plan on becoming a physician. MCAT Test Day describes the structure of the exam, from 8AM reporting time to late afternoon completion.

Strategies for the MCAT Writing Sample
  • Take ten minutes to brainstorm and plan the essay before you begin to write. It may feel like you are allotting too much time to the planning, but this strategic investment will net you a large payback. You will write more quickly and more effectively as a result.
  • Take up each of the three tasks in the order in which they are presented. Task one asks you to explain or interpret the given statement; task two requires exploring the statement further through a contradiction or exception; and finally, task three requires resolving the apparent conflict between the statement and its contradiction. The essay will probably organize itself naturally in the shape of a thesisantithesissynthesis. Respond to all three tasks to receive a high score. As the MCAT student manual reminds you, in structuring the essay, do not just rely on the kind of rule-based formulas your high school composition teacher taught you. You should imagine yourself talking the subject over with your audience considering multiple viewpoints, showing an awareness of complexity rather than striving to prove a single, narrow thesis. Most likely your essay will be inductive that is, your position will build towards the end of the essay rather than being formally announced at the beginning.
  • Tips on brainstorming: First try to paraphrase the statement in a conversational tone. This quote is really another way of saying . . . . What this quote really means is . . . .

Prepared by Tina Sicard (EC '98) The MCAT is one of the most important tests you will take as a premed student, therefore it is a wise idea to be well prepared. Some people do take the exam cold, and as a consequence do not do well. This exam requires extensive preparation for good performances. The MCAT is the only way that medical schools have to objectively compare you and your college to applicants from other institutions. Consequently, most medical schools have minimum cut-off scores for acceptance; therefore, it is in your best interest to present them with the best scores you can achieve. Although the MCAT is not the only form of evaluation, it may be just the edge you need to be competitive. "Beginning in 1990, a new version of the MCAT has been adopted by the American Association of Medical Colleges. The new version is based on the philosophy that medical students should have the ability to think and analyze, rather than simply memorize." (Plantz 77) The new exam consists of four parts: Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Verbal Reasoning and a Writing Sample (essays). The new format is designed to evaluate the applicant’s knowledge of basic concepts in physics, biology and chemistry. It also tests comprehension, critical and analytical thinking, logical reasoning, communication and writing skills, problem-solving and qualitative skills.

  • Can I decide not to release my MCAT scores and then later decide to release them after I have seen my score?
    1) What is the MCAT? Index The Medical College Admissions Test, or MCAT, is the standardized admissions test required by nearly all U.S. medical schools (some combined BS/MD programs that accept students directly from high school do not require the MCAT). The test consists of four sections: Verbal Reasoning (scored 1-15), Physical Sciences (scored 1-15), Biological Sciences (scored 1-15), and an essay section (scored J-T, with T being the highest). The test takes one long Saturday to complete and is offered twice a year, usually in mid April and in late August. Official information about the MCAT, including registration information, may be obtained online from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). 2) How important is the MCAT in the admission process? Index The MCAT is very important. A high MCAT score by itself will not get you into medical school, but a low MCAT score may keep you out. Unfortunately, an otherwise qualified applicant may not even be granted an interview if his or her MCAT scores are not high enough. Once an interview is granted, each applicant is evaluated individually in determining acceptance or rejection. In most cases the MCAT still is just as important as other parts of the application in making the final decision.

for more details and for information on availability.
These packages are freely available for non-commercial use only! That is for teaching and research. Any commercial use has first to be negotiated with Prof. Howard Wheater ( h.wheater@imperial.ac.uk ) of the Imperial College. It is also important to remember that these are not commercial packages! They therefore do not come with the quality control commercial packages will have one through. However, this will be implemented for later versions.
The Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Toolbox - RRMT has been developed within the scope of a model regionalisation project in order to produce parsimonious, lumped model structures with a high level of parameter identifiability. Such identifiability is crucial if relationships between the model parameters representing the system and catchment characteristics (e.g. dominant soil types, land use, etc.) are to be established. RRMT is a modular framework that allows its user to implement different model structures to find a suitable balance between model performance and parameter identifiability. Model structures that can be implemented are lumped, relatively simple (in terms of number of parameters), and of conceptual or hybrid metric-conceptual type.
