Designed to measure skills that are considered essential for success in the first year of law school, the LSAT helps predict first-year law school performance. Dates The LSAT is administered four times a year (June, late September/early October, December, and February). Check the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) for upcoming test dates. LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information contains information on registration, fees, testing locations, and sample questions. This is an extremely helpful booklet. Visit your pre-law advisor to pick up a copy. Ideally, the LSAT should be taken one year prior to anticipated law school enrollment. Most students take the June or September/October test in anticipation of entering law school the following fall. For many college students, the December test conflicts with final exams, and the February test is very late in the whole law school application process. In addition, taking the June and/or September/October test provides enough time to complete the application process in an unhurried fashion. Format The LSAT is a half-day standardized pencil-and-paper test. It contains five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions. No questions are asked of a factual nature. In other words, no questions on the exam require you to “know the law.” Four out of the five sections are calculated for the test taker’s score relative to other test takers, and the remaining section is for experimental purposes. The sections are randomly ordered, and the test taker does not know which section is the experimental one. The following are the five sections:

It is designed to indicate a candidate’s potential to succeed in the first year of law school. The test is offered four times each year (June, October, December, February). Alternative dates are available for observers of Saturday Sabbath and special arrangements can be made in advance for those requiring special equipment or considerations. Four scored, 35- minute sections, including logical reasoning, analytical reasoning and reading comprehension, along with an unscored 35-minute selection of experimental questions, and a 30-minute writing sample compose the LSAT. Test takers do not know which section is experimental and the writing component always ends the exam. Scores range from 120 to 180 points. When to take the LSAT The LSAT should be taken in June prior to the year you plan on applying to law school. For example, if you want to begin law school in 2005, you should attempt to take the June 2004 exam. Ideally, the LSAT should only be taken one time (because many law schools average the scores) and you should have spent a significant amount of time preparing for the exam.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS FROM AN LSAT Sample Reading Comprehension Section Directions: Each passage in this section is followed by a group of questions to be answered on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. For some of the questions, more than one of the choices could conceivably answer the question. However, you are to choose the best answer; that is, the response that most accurately and completely answers the question, and blacken the corresponding space on your answer sheet. For the poet Phillis Wheatley, who was brought to colonial New England as a slave in 1761, the formal literary code of eighteenth-century English was thrice removed: by the initial barrier of the unfamiliar English language, by the discrepancy between spoken and literary forms of English, and by the African tradition of oral rather than written verbal art. Wheatley transcended these barriers - she learned the English language and English literary forms so quickly and well that she was composing good poetry in English within a few years of her arrival in New England. Wheatley's experience exemplifies the meeting of oral and written literary cultures. The aesthetic principles of the African oral tradition were preserved in America by folk artist in work songs, dancing, field hollers, religious music, the use of the drum, and, after the drum was forbidden, in the perpetuation of drum effects in song. African languages and the functions of language in African societies not only contributed to the emergence of a distinctive Black English but also exerted demonstrable effects on the manner in which other Americans spoke English. Given her African heritage and her facility with English and the conventions of English poetry, Wheatley's work had the potential to apply the ideas of a written literature to an oral literary tradition in the creation of an African American literary language.
