The College Level Examination Program(CLEP) is a program of examinations that enable a student or adult to earn college level credit for entering freshmen and adults returning to school. The CLEP is also used by businesses and professional groups to satisfy educational requirements for advancement, licensing and training purposes.
Description of CLEP Tests
    There are two categories of CLEP exams: General and Subject.
    General Examinations
      The General Examinations cover the basic material taught to students during the first two years of college. Each examination is 90 minutes long and consist entirely of multiple-choice question; except for the English Composition with Essay section.

All CLEP exams are now administered by computer. With computerized testing, you receive a score report immediately after taking a CLEP exam. Note : You need to wait a bit longer - about three weeks - to hear the final results if you're taking an exam with a required essay (e.g., English Composition with essay). The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States today, helping students of all ages earn college degrees faster by getting credit for what they already know. By receiving a satisfactory score, you can earn from 3 to 6 college credits toward your college degree for each CLEP you take, depending on the exam subject. CLEP offers 35 exams. Check with your school to determine which exams are accepted and how many CLEP credits they will accept. How much does each exam cost? Each CLEP exam costs $50.00 (U.S.) payable to CLEP plus a $15.00 (U.S.) administration fee payable to UMPI. An additional $10.00 fee needs to be included when taking the optional essay portion of an exam. UMPI students do not need to take the optional essay portion. CLEP prefers payment via credit card; however, they will accept check or money order. You must have separate payment for each exam you take. CLEP will not accept cash . College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) The CLEP tests are designed to measure what you have learned through informal study, reading, travel, and work and to equate this knowledge with what students usually learn during the first year of college study. Credits earned on the CLEP tests can give you advanced standing and therefore help you complete college more quickly. In the College of General Studies (CGS), you may earn up to 30 credits (of the 120 needed for graduation) by earning 6 credits on each of the five General Examinations. Six credits are awarded for each exam on which you score 50 points or more. A score of less than 50 points is awarded zero credits. AP, IB, CLEP, and Other Credit Information (Freshman) Florida State University awards college credit to incoming freshmen based on the results of AP and IB examinations, as well as SAT and ACT scores. Advanced Placement (AP) Students who earn a score of 3 or better will be awarded between 3 and 12 semester hours of college credit, depending upon the score and the exam. For specific credit amounts, refer to the FSU AP Credit Policies International Baccalaureate (IB) Enrolling students who earn the IB Diploma are guaranteed thirty semester hours of credit and sophomore standing. Certificate candidates or those who do not earn enough points to be awarded the IB Diploma may earn credit for Higher level exams with scores of 5 or better. 1. Follow the instructions in the CLEP Registration-Admission form. All information requested on the entire page (including CLEP TEST CENTER ADMISSION FORM) must be given. Registration deadline at U of I is any time prior to an available test date. To register, visit the Testing Administrator in Esch Hall 112, Room 5 (12-8 p.m. weekdays, 10-4:30 Fridays). All CLEP registrations must be done in person. You must wait six months from the test date to repeat a CLEP exam. 2. CLEP Items #15 and 16: Note that the General Exams and the Subject Exams are listed separately. 3. CLEP Item #16: Note that all Subject Exams taken at the University of Indianapolis are without essay. The general examination, English Composition with Essay, is the only exam requiring an essay. Registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis only in person during the hours of 12-8 PM weekdays and 10-4:30 on Fridays. Ask for the Testing Administrator in Esch Hall 112, Room 5. You pay a $12.00 administrative fee at the time you register for an exam, payable by cash check or money order only. The $50 test fee ($55.00 beginning July 1, 2004) is payable on the day of the test, before testing begins, by personal check, money order, American Express, VISA, or MasterCard. CLEP does not accept cash payments. NOTE: Once you have registered for a CLEP exam, the $12 fee is 100% nonrefundable and nontransferable. CLEP Examinations will be given through the University Testing Service as indicated in the schedule below. In order to register, you must EITHER obtain a CLEP Registration Packet from Testing Services by calling 852-6606 OR download the " 2003-2004 Information for Candidates " booklet. Application forms must reach the office at least ONE WEEK before a given examination date. No more than three (3) examinations may be taken unless the additional essay portion of a exam, i.e. Freshman College Composition, is taken, then only two (2) examinations may be taken on any given test date. The CLEP fee for each exam is $50.00 CLEP fees are preferred to be paid by credit card but you can also pay by check or money order on the day of the exam. (Please make sure you indicate on your registration the form of payment you will pay on the day of the test!!!!) Do not combine fees for multiple tests even if they are to be taken on the same day. The College Level Exam Program (CLEP) includes nationally normed examinations. CLEP has (1) subject matter examinations, and (2) general examinations.
Eligibility for CLEP
CLEP subject or general examinations may be taken prior to entering the University. If the individual passes a CLEP examination, the University accepts the amount of credit indicated in the CLEP table, but only after admission is granted and the student is (or has been) enrolled in PSU courses.
Qualifications for CLEP Transfer
Students who have taken CLEP examinations prior to entering Portland State may transfer such credit provided they have passed the examination with scores at or above the minimum accepted by PSU and provided the University has approved the examinations for credit.
Where to Apply for CLEP Exams
Admitted students planning to take CLEP exams should apply for them at least one month in advance with the Testing Office of PSU's Counseling and Psychological Services or with another recognized CLEP testing center. The Testing Office supplies descriptive brochures and other information on CLEP exams. Fees for CLEP exams are set by the Educational Testing Services and are subject to change. All exams are computerized. Exams that PSU accepts can be viewed at www.ess.pdx.edu/caps/testing
