    Beyond the Browser Upgrade Campaign
    Early 2001 was a difficult time for web developers. Although browsers that supported common web standards were in good supply there were a great number of browsers in active use that didn't fall into this category. It is now the Spring of 2003 and the web has a much different complexion. Many, many computers now have browsers with acceptable support for web standards. Those computers that do not by now, may never. With this in mind we at the Web Standards project feel its time to retire the Browser Upgrade Campaign (BUC).
    What was the BUC?
    The BUC was created in order to give site builders a means for educating their visitors as to the existence of web standards and encourage those visitors to upgrade to browsers that supported standards such as HTML, CSS and a standard DOM.
    What were its goals?

In addition, we will briefly explain some of the techniques used by unions to organize employees, and what management should and should not do to show employees that union representation is not in their best interests. In a prior booklet in this series, we explained the basic outline of the Act, the collective bargaining process, and conduct prohibited by the Act, known as "unfair labor practices."

Summary of the ADA certification submission requirements, copies of certificationrelated forms, and a detailed description of the certification process.

ADA Certification of State and Local Accessibility Requirements
Newly Constructed and Altered Buildings and Facilities
Title III of the ADA authorizes the Department of Justice to certify that State laws, local building codes, or similar ordinances meet or exceed the ADA Standards for Accessible Design for new construction and alterations. Title III applies to public accommodations and commercial facilities, which include most private businesses and non-profit service providers. Examples of covered businesses are restaurants, banks and commercial lending institutions, movie theaters, stadiums, grocery and convenience stores, health care facilities and professional medical offices to name a few.
Congress, by authorizing the certification of State and local accessibility requirements under title III, recognized the important role that state and local building codes and standards may play in achieving compliance with the building-related aspects of accessibility. State and local building officials who are involved in plan approval and construction inspection processes may provide important assistance to construction and design professionals through their oversight of the accessibility requirements of a certified State or local code.
And, in any legal challenge that might be brought under the ADA to facilities constructed in compliance with an ADA certified code, compliance with the certified code constitutes rebuttable evidence of compliance with title III of the ADA. The benefits of certification are not limited, however, to potential ADA lawsuits.

Article 8(1) of the European Convention on Human Rights. This document summarises the incursions into civil liberties of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), which was passed in the UK in July 2000. This act can be found at the HMSO web-site
Index
  • Summary
  • Detailed discussion
Summary
The RIPA allows the government to access a person's electronic communications in a very unrestricted manner, thus infringing in the privacy of their correspondance in a manner many would not tolerate regarding their postal communications. The act: enables the government to demand that an ISP provides access to a customer's communications in secret;
enables mass surveillance of communications in transit;

enables the government to demand ISPs fit equipment to facilitate surveillance;

enables the government to demand that someone hands over keys to protected information;
...
prevents the existence of interception warrants and any data collected with them from being revealed in court
Detailed discussion
The RIPA incurs into civil liberties in several ways: The government can demand that a public telecommunications service intercepts an individual's communications
The act's "interception warrants" can be served for purposes of "national security", "preventing or detecting serious crime" or "safeguarding the economic well-being of the UK". These (undefined) terms are so vague as to be applicable to just about anyone.

Act One Theatre Group was formed in 1995 when the company mounted a highly successful production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" here at St Paul's. After the success of "Oliver" in 1996, which was staged at the Capitol Theatre, Didsbury ( and which incidentally was the last production to be performed before the theatre was sadly torn down), the company has returned to its original home as a much more confident and structured theatre group. Although entry is by audition, Act One is a voluntary organisation whose profits will go to St Paul's funds and future productions. Now officially affiliated to St Paul's the company hope to perform on a more regular basis, with musicals being a forerunner to straight plays and drama.
