Welcome to FIG Surveying Education Database
The Surveying Education Database (SEDB) was established by FIG Commission 2 on Professional Education. The database is the result of merging data from two different surveys conducted by respectively FIG and CASLE. The database has been changed to the FIG web site in February 2000. The update is now taken care by the FIG office in Copenhagen. The validity of the data is the responsibility of the individual educational institutions. Any omissions or errors should be reported to the FIG office. All universities and institutions on the current database have received or will receive a user ID and a password from the FIG office . If your institution is included in the database and you have not yet received your password, please contact the FIG office . With the password institution is able to make changes directly to the database. For further details, please see the pages about authoring or consult the FIG office.

http://www.tech.mtu.edu/TLS/
Surveying is the science of measuring the physical features of the earth using specialized equipment and procedures to obtain highly accurate results. Surveyors perform boundary and engineering-related surveys to prepare maps, plots, and plans depicting topography. They also verify the locat ion of existing or planned surface or sub-surface features in relation to the existing survey control. Using high-precision optical and electromechanical instruments and global positioning data from satellites, surveyors are responsible for interpreting the information and formulating conclusions. To emphasize these technologies, the program is laboratory oriented, including an intensive, one-summer program covering many field procedures. Most states require licensing or registration of surveyors. The requirements vary but generally include the completion of a rigorous examination and a three- to eight-year apprenticeship with a registered surveyor. Michigan, along with several other states, requires candidates to have a bachelor's degree in surveying before taking the licensing examination. Michigan Tech's surveying program is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ASAC/ABET) . It is one of only six such accredited programs nationwide. Professional organizations are promoting the "regional surveying school" concept, and Michigan Tech's program serves the upper Midwest.

Most people never meet the land surveyor that performs their survey. Surveyors play a large portion in every day real estate transactions. Along with a lot of other people behind the scenes trying to bring together an important step in your life…….the purchase of a house for your family, tract of land for investment or small parcel of land for a summer retreat.
When being a "prospective" land purchaser, it's a good idea to talk to the adjoining owners, if possible, to get an idea of what they know about the property lines. This way, you can find out any possible problem areas which would aid in your decision of whether or not to get a survey done or to back off from the land purchase. If you decide to follow through with having a survey done, you begin your search for a surveyor
Many times during my career I've seen neighbors "fall out" over just a few feet and even a few inches of property.
One such instance when 2 neighbors were "feuding" over a tree that each one claimed to be theirs. Upon staking the property line in the subdivision between them…….the tree (a 1" Maple) was "directly on" the property line. Now, because each neighbor had too much pride to admit to their wrong doing, or to apologize for their actions toward each other, they still don't speak to each other.
I enjoy my profession, but there are times that doing this type of work, you see the best of neighbors become enemies.

CAD Applications Overview
CoOrdinator
CoOrdinator provides a convenient and easy way to import or export data into and out of AutoCAD using just about any ASCII format. This data can be brought into AutoCAD as points, polylines or even a block. Export data can include non-coordinate data such as text string values or symbol/block attribute data.
Survey Draughting
CGSS has developed Survey draughting systems for open pit, bord and pillar, open stoping, and underground filling operations. The systems have been built around automated data input from Total Stations, data loggers and GPS (global positioning systems). These are linked, through automated drawing production and mapping operations, to blast design and mining control applications. The systems routinely interface with the major mine planning and geological modelling systems for data exchange, and are widely used for the production of presentation quality drawings of the output from the mine planning systems.
Stability Monitoring
An AutoCAD based system for maintaining a database of measurement data relating to monitored movement of points in space. Originating in the monitoring of Pit slopes, this software has applications in all fields of engineering. The system handles automated and manual data input and covers data from prisms, extensometers, piezometers and drainage wells.

Abstract
At any given moment there are thousands of surveys and polls being conducted on the web, yet surprisingly little scholarly research is reported about this new technique. After a summary review of the comparative literature on e-mail and "snail mail" and a more extensive review of research involving web-based methods, this article contrasts e-mail and web-based survey techniques used in an ongoing study of the web presence provider industry. Practical issues of web-surveying methods are highlighted, such as programming pitfalls, sample-building, and incentives.
Introduction
The self-administered survey questionnaire has long been an economic alternative to labor-intensive and expensive face-to-face and telephone interviews. With the widespread adoption of e-mail among corporate, scholastic, and government populations, and to a somewhat lesser extent the general computing public, dissemination of survey materials among such populations has never been so easy or cheap. Another alternative gaining in popularity is the fill-in-form survey which uses the hypertext markup language (HTML) and common-gateway-interface (cgi) programming of the World Wide Web to construct, format, and administer questionnaires to web users. This paper contrasts the two electronic survey techniques in light of methodological issues which have arisen during a work-in-progress: an extensive survey of the web "presence" provider industry.
