Flatirons Surveying is located in Boulder, Colorado, and provides land surveying services to the Boulder County and Colorado Front Range area. It is the intent of this web site to provide information for existing and potential clients, and to remove the shroud of mystery that surrounds the profession of land surveying. Emphasis is placed on providing useful information rather than a cornucopia of web capabilities. We also want to provide a collection of links to related local resources and to other sources of technical survey information for those who will find it useful or interesting. Since many people do not need the services of a land surveyor often, most are not aware of what to expect when such a need arises. Because of this, it is difficult to reach a level of comfort regarding the benefits received in return for the money spent on a land survey. The information presented at the conclusion of land surveying activities will often continue to be useful far into the future in ways we cannot anticipate. The founding fathers of our country realized the importance of land surveying, and many of the earliest efforts of our country's formative years were directed to the laying out of the Public Lands and dispersement to private owners. Basic theories of surveying
Surveying has been traditionally defined as the science of measuring and mapping relative positions above, on or under the surface of the ground, or establishing such positions from a technical plan or title description. As such, the surveyor dealt with the physical and mathematical aspect of measurement. Modern technology has provided tools that have greatly changed the physical act of measurement, and computers that have greatly changed the mathematical aspect. The modern surveyor blends skills from several disciplines, including those of mathematician, law scholar, expert measurer, and translator. By interpreting the legal description and applying the science of measurement, the surveyor translates the legal description into tangible positions on the ground. These positions on the ground can be used as a basis for construction or for perpetuation of a particular location, possibly to show delineation of ownership or to document change over time.
Of course, the surveyor must be familiar with mathematics, especially the application of trigonometry. Most traditional surveying is
