Image credit: NASA/JPL Opportunity Will Enter the Crater Jun 4, 2004 - NASA has given Opportunity the "thumbs up" to drive into Endurance crater; even though it might not be able to get back out again. There's just so much science in there that it's worth the risk. Opportunity has been investigating the rim of the crater since late May to find the best possible place to go in to avoid rolling over. The earliest chance to enter the crater will be next week, when it will drive to the southern edge of the crater and make a final check of the steepness of the slope. (Full Story) Related Stories Discuss this story Book Review: The Fabric of the Cosmos Jun 4, 2004 - So you're at this cocktail party and your eye is totally captured by this vivacious and charming individual circling the room. You get your chance and approach. You start talking and when asked what you do, before your brain kicks in, your mouth says, "theoretical physicist". You're doomed. You're a charlatan and you will be exposed in no time. But wait, there is hope. Before your next party, read Brian Greene's book on The Fabric of the Cosmos and though you won't be able to impress graduate students, you will certainly add life to a party's conversation.

163. Interactive Experiments In Gravity
Try an experiment that illustrates the gravitational attraction between two objects or use a Java applet to understand how orbits work in strongly curved spacetime.
http://www.fourmilab.ch/gravitation/
Interactive Experiments in Gravity
This directory contains documents and interactive Java applets which explore aspects of both Newton's theory of universal gravitation and Einstein's general relativity. The first two installments in the series are now available.
Bending Spacetime in the Basement
We live our entire lives within the Earth's gravitational field, yet rarely if ever do we experience the universality of gravitation: that every object in the universe attracts and is attracted by every other. This page presents a "basement science" experiment which reveals the gravitational attraction between objects less than a kilogram in mass. Knowledge in antiquity suggesting gravitation was universal is discussed, and the feasibility of an experimental test using only materials and techniques of the era is explored.
Orbits in Strongly Curved Spacetime
Close-in orbits around compact massive objects such as neutron stars and black holes trace out paths drastically different from the ellipses of Kepler's Laws. Since the velocity of an orbiting object cannot attain or exceed the speed of light, Einstein's general relativity predicts a different energy curve, resulting in precession absent in Newton's theory. This page includes an interactive applet that lets you explore such orbits and explains the theory behind them.

Welcome to the "ultimate page" on Awful Green Things from Outer Space , one of my favorite two-player games. AGTFOS, as it is affectionately known, was created by game-designer and cartoonist Tom Wham. It appeared first as a insert to Dragon Magazine in1980, followed by a boxed edition from TSR and popular mini and full-sized editions by Steve Jackson Games. It is, I believe, currently out of print, although I have collected some links to places where copies, mostly used, can be obtained. This page contains everything about AGTFOS I can find on the web, together with some tips of my own. I plan to keep this site updated with whatever I can find or are given. New entries are marked . Space Ghost Information
Space Ghost is one of the most popular superheroes to come out of Saturday morning and is still watched by many children today. Unlike comic book heroes, Space Ghost originated on television, embodying animation in the 60’s. Legendary animator Alex Toth's use of bright colors, sleek lines and an almost sinister costume gave Space Ghost an undefinable hipness that TV watchers immediately clung to. The hero's name stemmed from the fact that he was able to make himself invisible through the use of high-tech wizardry. He could also shoot heat rays, cold rays and plain old power blasts from the bands on his wrists.

In visualising scenes from outside our world we consciously think of the future - a promising future, full of hope. I have created a series of oil paintings from which these prints have been generated. Hopefully these paintings have the appearence of being painted from real life without trying to present an almost photographic image. Dreams of Space
"It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow" Robert Goddard, 1927 "The younger generation of rocket engineers is just beginning. They are of the new generation to which space travel is not going to be a dream of the future but an everyday job with everyday worries in which they will be engaged" Willy Ley, 1951 "The visions we offer our children shape the future. It matters what those visions are. Often they become self-fulfilling prophecies. Dreams are maps" Carl Sagan, 1994 "Soon there will be no one who remembers when spaceflight was still a dream, the reverie of reclusive boys and the vision of a handful of men" Wyn Wachhorst, 1995
You will go to the Moon
With the discoveries by Robert Goddard and Hermann Oberth of liquid-fueled rockets in the 1930's and the use of V-2 rockets in the 1940's, rocket travel went from science fiction to science fact in the public's mind. In post-World War II America anything seemed possible, even going to the Moon! There appeared in 1949, a book The Conquest of Space , which led to a new trend in children's books. These books outlined the future the children of the "baby boom" would grow up in, the world of space (

176. Lost In Space: The Movie
An extensive collection of annotated pictures from the movie.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8145/lis_entertain.html
LOST IN SPACE was my all time favorite program as a kid. Thank goodness I am still a kid at heart because it is soon to be released as a major motion picture. The whole Robinson family is taking off with their pilot, robot and bad guy stowaway. (go to the (kfamily) LIS page 2 homepage entertainment page or links The Robot The new robot reminds me of the robot gone berserk in the first robocop or something from the MechWars Game Blasting Off The underside of the new spaceship. I assume that it will be called the Jupiter 2. It appears to be lifting off. Large Oblong Spaceship The new Robinson Space looks cool and seems much larger and more realistic. Dr. Smith Dr. Smith in the previews seems truely evil. This is the way I had always hope Dr. Smith would be like in the TV series. Penny Robinson This seemingly weightless scene reminds me of the first LIS TV Pilot episode plot. The Women of Lost in Space. From the background it appears that events go beyond just the spaceship. Will Robinson I pretended to be Will Robinson when I first watch the TV series. I can't believe I was that young!

180. No Nukes In Space
Personal opinion regarding the launch of a space probe that contains plutonium.
http://www.idiot.com/html/nuke.html
SPACE NUKES What Are You Saying? Obviously the concept of space, that is "the next frontier", has escaped this poor protester regarding the launch of a space probe that contains a small, minute amount of plutonium. Let us look at this matter a little closer. The universe, commonly referred to as space, is filled with many galaxies. These galaxies are composed of many stars. As the late Carl Sagan said, there are "billions and billions" of stars. You know, our Sun is a star. Did you know that? That's not all. Ever heard of a Quasar or a Pulsar? How about a Black Hole? That's a damn lot of radiation. And what are these stars? Humongous THERMONUCLEAR reactions which produces the heat and the light that supports our life on this little blue planet. Imagine that. Oh, and for those who do not know, these are FUSION reactions, and not cold ones either. Talk about nukes in space! The whole universe is one big nuclear melting pot. That little plutonium needs to split its atoms and that is a FISSION reaction, a much less powerful release of energy. Shoot, I doubt that little chunk of rock would disrupt the whole balance of power out there, but then again that butterfly in the South Pacific is causing adverse weather conditions in the Great Plains.... So these people have a problem with this small amount of plutonium being launched into space. Do you think this little amount of radiation will add to the background radiation in our universe? Let's see here. A small amount of plutonium which humans can contain or the Sun? Hmmmmm? Which gives off more radiation? I don't think we need a science class to figure this one out.
