v1.0.2 / 01 jul 02 / greg goebel / public domain * Explosives, pyrotechnics, and fireworks chemical materials and devices to create fire, smoke, light, heat, noise, or explosions have been an important technology for centuries, and continue to be improved. This document provides a short survey. [1] DEFINITIONS
[2] BASIC PRINCIPLES

[3] BLACK POWDER / LOW EXPLOSIVES

[4] COMMERCIAL HIGH EXPLOSIVES
...
[9] FOOTNOTE: EXPLOSIVES TAGGING
[1] DEFINITIONS
* The term "pyrotechnics" means "science of fire", and in principle covers all chemical devices and materials whose purpose is to burn and produce an explosion, fire, light, heat, noise, or gas emission. Following this definition, "explosives" are pyrotechnic materials that cause an explosion, and "fireworks" are pyrotechnic devices used for entertainment. However, the actual usage of these words is a little more confusing and inconsistent. The best way to define them is by description:
  • "Pyrotechnics" generally refers to chemical materials to create fire, light, heat, noise, or gas emission, but not explosions.

Here you will find information on some interesting chemistry and pyrotechnic projects that I have done. Most of the compositions and projects have been tried and found true. Some of the information on this site was gained from other sources. Andy Gustafson - founder Here are some current projects that are in development here at Xinventions. These projects will be released to the public in the future as stated below: Fully automatic potato cannon. This air cannon is capable of firing potatoes at a rate of 2-3 per second. It will have a CO2 hook up for portability and will be the first of its kind. Prospective release date: end of summer of 04' Hoverboard.

Last Updated: Wednesday, Jan 7, 2004 - 8:12 p.m. Pacific Time Xinventions.com How to make a simple shell A shell is a firework much like what you see in firework displays at the fourth of July. This tiny shell is a lot like a film canister shell in the sense that it is just as small and it's effect is more or less the same (a small shell). It's construction is quite different from a film canister shell and is made for a 4 cm mortar. Tiny shells are made with more traditional materials such as paper, string and glue.
The materials
  • A burst charge - You can use black powder. BP is much more safe to use than flash powder, but can give a bad break if your casing is flimsy. Stars - Round or cylindrical pumped/pressed stars. The stars should be somewhere between 5 to 10 mm, depending on burn rate. Timefuse - Visco is fine.
