In the field of space transportation, it was recognized quite early that the propulsion abilities of the chemical rocket propulsion units are so minimal that missions which require higher propulsion can only be successfully carried out with a multiple gradation and a small portion of payload. The reason for this lies in the inferior energy capacity of the fuel whereby the maximum attainable exit speed from a rocket nozzle is limited to approximately 4 to 5 km/s One possibility of overcoming this limitation is the coupling of additional energy for example in the form of electric energy. This was already performed by Goddard in 1906 and later by Hermann Oberth in his book "The Rocket to the Planetary Spaces" Because the possibility of space travel was first made concrete with the development of large rockets after World War II, it was mainly the work of Ernst Stuhlinger which once more drew attention to the advantages of electric space propulsion, and has, since the 1960s, led an extensive worldwide research and development program. Various concepts differing extensively from one another, mainly on the basis of the acceleration mechanism, were examined because with electric energy, acceleration can occur purely thermally, electrostatically or electromagnetically. In order to achieve efficient utilization of electrostatic or electromagnetic acceleration forces, a charge carrier must first be established through the ionization of the fuel, for which there are again different starting points.

The ideal interstellar propulsion system would be one that could get you to other stars as quickly and comfortably as envisioned in science fiction. Before this can become a reality, two scientific breakthroughs are needed: discovery of a means to exceed light speed, and discovery of a means to manipulate the coupling between mass and spacetime. This article explains why these breakthroughs are needed and introduces the emerging possibilities that may eventually lead to these breakthroughs. It should be noted that either of these breakthroughs by itself would have revolutionary consequences which would be of enormous value. The need to exceed light speed: Simply put, the universe is big. The fastest thing known is light, yet it takes over four years for light to reach our nearest neighboring star. When NASA's Voyager spacecraft left our solar system is was traveling around 37- thousand mph. At that rate it couldn't reach the nearest star until after 80-thousand years. If we want to cruise to other stars within comfortable time spans (say, less than a term in Congress), we have to figure out a way to go faster than light. The need to manipulate mass and spacetime coupling: This need is less obvious than the light speed issue. The problem is fuel, or more specifically, rocket propellant. Unlike a car that has the road to push against, or an airplane that has the air to push against, rockets don't have roads or air in space. Rockets have to carry along all the mass that they'll need to push against. To circumvent this problem, we need to find a way to interact with spacetime itself to induce propulsive forces without using propellant. This implies that we'll need to find a way to alter a vehicle's inertia, its gravitational field, or its connectivity to the structure of spacetime itself.

The members of the Image Analyst subgroup process digital imagery and create scientific visualizations and animations. Analysts process data from robot spacecraft like Voyager, Magellan and Galileo and create planetary science animations as part of NASA's Solar System Visualization Project. They also process data from satellites and Space Shuttle instruments for the study of Earth's resources. Examples of their work include "LA, TheMovie", "Mars, The Movie", and segments of the IMAX films, "Blue Planet" and "Destiny in Space." The programmers in the Technology and Applications Development subgroup design and write visualization and analysis software. This software includes perspective rendering programs, video equipment control programs, and the ACTORS system.
