MSC IN PETROLEUM ENGINEERING

The MSc in Petroleum Engineering is an internationally renowned twelve month course, delivered at an institution which is a world leader in petroleum engineering research and teaching. The course is highly respected by the petroleum industry as it provides the breadth and depth of knowledge that modern engineers need. Exploiting unique links with its sister MSc course in Petroleum Geoscience, the course covers the full spectrum of petroleum reservoir appraisal, characterisation, development and management, using the multi-disciplinary work-flow concepts now prevailing in the industry. It provides a route into the specialties of petroleum engineering for those with qualifications in other fields of engineering and science, as well as an opportunity for those already working in the industry to improve their technical skills and qualifications. The course leads to the MSc degree of the University of London, in addition to the Diploma of Imperial College.
The course is highly regarded by the petroleum industry, which provides grants and scholarships for students, field data for use in the course, and presentations to supplement course material. Moreover, most students conduct their individual research project in collaboration with an industry host. This ensures that the course is tailored to the needs of the industry, and that students gain experience of working in the industry, leading to exceptionally high employment rates and starting salaries for graduates. Many of our alumni hold senior positions in the petroleum and related industries and government departments around the world.

Petroleum Engineering
Petroleum engineers explore for and devise methods for the production of oil and natural gas. If a workable reservoir containing oil or natural gas is discovered, petroleum engineers work to achieve the maximum profitable recovery from the reservoir by determining and developing the most efficient production methods. Because only a small proportion of the oil and gas in a reservoir will flow out under natural forces, petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced recovery methods. These include injecting water, chemicals, or steam into an oil reservoir to force more of the oil out, and horizontal drilling or fracturing to connect more of a gas reservoir to a well. Since even the best methods in use today recover only a portion of the oil and gas in a reservoir, petroleum engineers work to find ways to increase this proportion.
Petroleum Engineer
I am Mounir, and I am a petroleum engineer. I got interested in petroleum engineering while attending four years of college in mining engineering. Several years after earning a bachelor's degree in mining engineering, I earned a master's degree in petroleum engineering. At MMS I calculate oil and gas reserves for the Gulf of Mexico fields. My job in MMS is to estimate how many cubic feet and how many barrels of oil there are in the Gulf of Mexico.

A s the Federal agency that manages the Nation's natural gas, oil, and other mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), the Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) is committed to achieving the proper balance between providing energy for the American people and protecting coastal and marine environments. In addition to providing prudent leasing and safe management of Federal OCS lands, the MMS collects, accounts for, and disburses about $4 billion yearly in revenues from offshore and onshore Federal and Indian lands. This is the largest Federal revenue source outside the Treasury Department.
MMS's Minerals Revenue Management (MRM) is responsible for all mineral revenue management functions for Federal offshore and onshore leases and Indian lands. RMP collects, accounts for, and distributes revenues generated from these lands. Revenues collected from Federal leases are shared with the specific States in which the leases are located, while revenues for Indian lands are distributed to tribal governments and individual Native Americans through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Offshore Minerals Management Program is responsible for the orderly development of America's offshore energy and minerals resources while properly safeguarding the environment. MMS leases certain offshore areas for oil and gas exploration, then closely monitors and enforces strict safeguards on drilling and production activities to protect our coastal environments and ensure proper royalty collection. These responsibilities entail a lengthy, detailed process designed to include input from the public, States, local governments, and others. In essence, MMS is both the "land manager" and "accountant" for offshore minerals. MMS meets these responsibilities through a commitment to quality science; it works diligently to protect the environment and achieve excellence in every aspect of its services. To accomplish this, the MMS workforce consists of about 1,800 individuals in more than 100 occupations.

Petroleum engineering offers a unique look at the challenging problems confronting the petroleum industry. This program requires an understanding of many disciplines including mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology and engineering science. Courses in petroleum engineering deal with drilling, formation evaluation, production, reservoir engineering, computer simulation and enhanced oil recovery. The curriculum prepares graduates to meet the demands of modern technology while emphasizing, whenever possible, the special problems encountered in Alaska. Located in one of the largest oil-producing states in the nation, the UAF petroleum engineering department offers one of the most modern and challenging degree programs available. The M.S. program is intended to provide the student with an advanced treatment of petroleum engineering concepts. Students may choose either a thesis or non-thesis option. Research and teaching assistantships are available.
