Optics
The scientific study of light. Physical optics is concerned with the creation, nature, and properties of light. Psychological optics pertains to the role of light in vision. Geometrical optics deals with the properties of reflection and refraction of light, as part of the study of mirrors, lenses, and optical fibers.

As you can see from the dictionary definition above, the study of optics falls into three general categories: light itself, what it is and how it behaves; How we perceive light through the sense of sight; and how light can be manipulated through such processes as reflection and refraction. Although we talk of these categories as if they were separate and distinct, actually the whole reality of sight and vision constantly involves all of these categories in various combinations. For example, consider a rainbow. This visual phenomenon not only involves both reflection and refraction, but also is a practical demonstration that different colors of light refract differently, even under fixed circumstances. For an excellent discussion of rainbows and their characteristics, take a look at

Welcome to WebTOP
Department of Physics and Astronomy
Mississippi State University
(NSF award numbers 9950569 and 0231217) W ebTOP is a 3D interactive computer graphics system that simulates and visualizes optical phenomena. Instructors can use it to help teach optics, and students can use it to help them learn about optics. It is an enhanced web-based version of The Optics Project (TOP), a system that ran on SGI workstations. TOP Resources W ebTOP uses many components of Web technology, including VRML 2.0, JavaScript, and Java. As such, we offer the following suggestions:
  • In order to run WebTOP, the VRML plug-in for your web browser should be Blaxxun Contact, which is available here we strongly recommend that you select the manual download, not the automatic download. Your browser should have JavaScript and Java enabled. The current version of WebTOP runs best with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows (or any more recent version). Please do not attempt to operate the widgets until the module is fully loaded.

170. Light And Optics: Online Meteorology Guide
Introduces optical effects resulting from light interaction with air, dust and haze particles, ice crystals and water droplets.
http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/opt/home.rxml
Graphic by: Yiqi Shao Rainbows, sunsets and halos; a spectacular display of colors and visuals in the sky called "atmospheric optics". As sunlight (or moonlight) enters the atmosphere, it is either absorbed, reflected, scattered, refracted or diffracted by atmospheric particles or air molecules. These processes, individually or in combination, are responsible for producing most optical effects. This module investigates these particle-light interactions and the assortment of optical effects they produce. The Light and Optics module has been organized into the following sections: Sections
Last Update: 08/26/99 Mechanisms
Particle/Molecule-light interactions responsible for creating optical effects. These interactions include: reflection, scattering, refraction and diffraction. Air, Dust, Haze
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with air, dust and haze particles. These effects include: crepuscular rays, blue skies, blue haze and sunsets. Ice Crystals
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with ice crystals. These effects include: sundogs, sun pillars and halos. Water Droplets
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with water droplets. These effects include: cloud iridescence, rainbows and a silver lining along the edge of clouds.
