The infomation is provided by the Austrian Institute for Applied Ecology .The first edition of this database was published in 1994 sponsored by Greenpeace and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management . The latter financed the update of the database in the following years and also this internet information service. The sources for information are technical publications, official reports (e.g. from NRC or from Russian or the German Ministry for Environment), IAEA publications and technical magazines like Nucleonic Weeks, Nuclear Fuel, Nuclear Engineering International, Atomwirtschaft/Atomtechnik, Atom but also Greenpeace publications, Nuke Info Tokyo and internet resources (DOE, NRC, NRPB, Nucnet, radnet). Operational data for nuclear power plants are from the IAEA database MICROPRIS. NNI provides not only information about incidents, but also about problems related to the use of nuclear energy:

Nuclear power station at Leibstadt Switzerland A nuclear reactor is an apparatus in which nuclear fission chain reactions are initiated, controlled, and sustained at a steady rate. Nuclear reactors provide heat for electricity generation , domestic and industrial heating, desalination, and naval propulsion. They also have many research applications including providing a source of neutrons and creating various radioactive isotopes Although the term 'nuclear reactor' could also refer to a nuclear fusion reactor , the term normally refers only to nuclear fission devices. Nuclear power can also be generated in a Radioisotope thermoelectric generator , which produces heat through subcritical radioactive decay rather than fission in a near-critical mass. The Nuclear Power Deception
    Preface
In recent years there has been a debate about the potential and need for developing a second generation of commercial nuclear power plants to generate electricity. Proponents of such development cite a range of reasons for undertaking it, primary among them the growing environmental problems (most notably the threat of global climate change) associated with conventional fossil-based electric power generation and the need to reduce the dependence of the United States on imported oil. At the same time, a related debate is taking place about U.S. proposals to build one or more reactors for military-related purposes. The stated reasons for building new reactors have varied, ranging from new plutonium and tritium production reactors in the late 1980s and early 1990s to reactors for burning excess military plutonium to a "triple play" reactor that would simultaneously burn excess plutonium, produce tritium (a radioactive gas used in nuclear warheads) and generate electricity. During the 1990s, a new element has been added to these debates that of using new reactors to burn Russian excess weapons plutonium.

SECURITYFOCUS NEWS
Slammer worm crashed Ohio nuke plant network By Kevin Poulsen SecurityFocus Aug 19 2003 2:45PM The Slammer worm penetrated a private computer network at Ohio's Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in January and disabled a safety monitoring system for nearly five hours, despite a belief by plant personnel that the network was protected by a firewall, SecurityFocus has learned.
The breach did not post a safety hazard. The troubled plant had been offline since February, 2002, when workers discovered a 6-by-5-inch hole in the plant's reactor head. Moreover, the monitoring system, called a Safety Parameter Display System, had a redundant analog backup that was unaffected by the worm. But at least one expert says the case illustrates a growing cybersecurity problem in the nuclear power industry, where interconnection between plant and corporate networks is becoming more common, and is permitted by federal safety regulations.
The Davis-Besse plant is operated by FirstEnergy Corp., the Ohio utility company that's become the

On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). The Chernobyl nuclear power plant located 80 miles north of Kiev had 4 reactors and whilst testing reactor number 4 numerous safety procedures were disregarded. At 1:23am the chain reaction in the reactor became out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,00 people had to be evacuated. Unfortunately to view this site properly to will require a frames capable brower.

NUCLEAR TERRORISM Abstract: The threat of nuclear terrorism most often brings images of a city totally flattened and incinerated by a nuclear bomb. While many focus on the problems associated with stolen weapons-grade nuclear materials , particularly those originating from the former Soviet Union, the greater threat may actually be an attack against a nuclear power plant . Terrorists would be able to skip the formidable task of assembling or stealing a nuclear bomb. There are more than a few terrorist experts who believe that a nuclear power plant will be successfully assaulted before terrorists have the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon. "The security guards at half the nuclear power plants in the United States have failed to repel mock terrorist attacks against safety systems designed to prevent a reactor meltdown. These are so-called "force-on-force" exercises supervised by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The NRC refuses to take enforcement action in response to the failures, and is in the process of weakening the rules of the game in response to industry complaints.

Welcome! The Yankee Nuclear Power Station - also known as "Yankee Rowe" - was the third nuclear power plant built in the United States and the first built in New England. The Yankee Rowe plant, located in Western Massachusetts, permanently shut down on February 26, 1992 after more than 31 years of producing electricity for New England electric consumers. Yankee made a commitment to the community to safely decommission the Yankee Rowe plant and prepare the site for future use. Yankee also promised to keep the community informed about those activities. Our website is one of the ways we strive to meet that commitment. Decommissioning began in 1993 and is nearing completion. The final tasks remaining are the completion of building dismantlement, license termination plan activities and site restoration. Physical decommissioning is scheduled to be completed in mid-2005 with the site ready for reuse in early 2006. The transfer of Yankee’s used fuel from wet to dry cask storage was successfully completed in June of 2003. You can learn more about these activities by browsing around our website. Or, if you happen to be near Rowe, Massachusetts, our visitor’s center is open on Mondays and by appointment. Please call 413-424-5498 for more information.

Nautilus (SSN 571) declared, "Underway on nuclear power." Thus began a new era in submarine warfare and a race between the United States and the Soviet Union for superiority under the sea. This lesson introduces students to the role of nuclear submarines during the Cold War. Students will explore the uses of nuclear submarines, the dangers faced by their crews, and the legacy left to their generation by the Cold War build-up. They will look at incidents involving submarines both during and after the Cold War, including the K-19 disaster . Students will analyze various aspects of these incidents and assemble their findings into a classroom presentation. Connections to the Curriculum: Geography, world history, environmental science

    Patching Nuclear Power
    J.A. Savage, Albion Monitor
    September 25, 2000
In a hushed quest to allow an expected 85 percent of the nation's nuclear
reactors to live beyond mandatory retirement, the nuclear industry talked
the federal government into allowing a generic 20-year extension on the
life of reactors. The public only has until October 16 to let the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC) know what it thinks of the government's plan
to allow license renewal instead of decommissioning.
According to the NRC, the only public meeting on the re-licensing plan has been held at its Maryland headquarters. The government's process effectively shuts out any public input on extending plant licenses, said Public Citizen senior policy analyst Jim Riccio. "Most of the public is not aware of the issues until they land in their laps, by way of their local nuclear plant." Here's where the "generic" part of re-licensing comes in. Instead of having an "in my backyard" approach for concerned citizens, the generic license extension puts the onus in a generic somewhere-else land. "By
