Often, Environmentalism and Nuclear Power are seen as mutually exclusive. This page is designed to educate citizens about the environmental benefits of nuclear power.
The Legacy of Three Mile Island
Twenty years ago, on March 28th, 1979, the reactor in Unit #2 at Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, suffered a malfunction, which, coupled with operator errors, resulted in the partial meltdown of the reactor core and release of radioactive coolant to the atmosphere. Although nobody was injured, this accident triggered widespread fear of nuclear energy in the public and calls for the abandonment of nuclear power.
Twenty years later, the nuclear energy industry is on the brink of a renaissance as the safety and economical production of electricity from nuclear plants reaches all-time highs. One of the best performers is, ironically, Three Mile Island Unit #1, which owns the endurance for continuous operation of a pressurized water reactor (616 days). When its owner decided to exit the electricity generation business, TMI-1 also became the first nuclear power plant ever to be sold to a new owner.
The nuclear power industry has advanced far since 1979. It has established itself as one of the safest, most economical, and environmentally methods of producing electricity. This renewal is a direct result of the lessons learned at Three Mile Island and the industry's dedication to not ever having a repeat.

http://web.mit.edu/nuclearpower/
An interdisciplinary MIT faculty group decided to study the future of nuclear power because of a belief that this technology is an important option for the United States and the world to meet future energy needs without emitting carbon dioxide and other atmospheric pollutants. Other options include increased efficiency, renewables, and carbon sequestration, and all may be needed for a successful greenhouse gas management strategy. This study, addressed to government, industry, and academic leaders, discusses the interrelated technical, economic, environmental, and political challenges facing a significant increase in global nuclear power utilization over the next half century and what might be done to overcome those challenges. This study was supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and by MIT's Office of the Provost and Laboratory for Energy and the Environment. New propulsion systems would cut the travel time to Mars
By Dr David Whitehouse
BBC News Online science editor President Bush is set to endorse using nuclear power to explore Mars and open up the outer Solar System. ...a tremendously positive step that will greatly enhance the prospects for human exploration and settlement of the Solar System
Robert Zubrin, Mars Society
He is expected to back the US space agency's recent nuclear propulsion initiative, Project Prometheus, either in his State of the Union speech, due on 28 January, or later this year when he submits his 2004 budget to Congress. It is believed he will give the initiative $1bn over five years, arguing that nuclear propulsion represents an essential technology for the manned and unmanned exploration of space. Supporters say nuclear power could change the nature of space exploration, but add that it will take many years and significant resources to develop.

Why We Fear nuclear power, Not Peanut Butter. By Hannah Holmes. Why are you scared of nuclear power, but not of a peanut butter sandwich?

Why We Fear Nuclear Power, Not Peanut Butter
By Hannah Holmes Why are you scared of nuclear power, but not of a peanut butter sandwich? Simply put you're off your nut, some gurus of "risk assessment" might say.
Anyone with half a brain would be scared silly of a peanut butter sandwich.
But you're not. And if I continue to pummel you with statistics that say you're more likely to die from the natural carcinogens in peanut butter than from living next to a nuclear power plant, you'll eventually knock me down and stuff jelly up my nose. When the captains of the nuclear industry originally offered the peanut butter equation, it didn't make them very popular with environmentalists and others who think we rely too heavily on half-tamed technologies and chemicals. The environmentalists, in fact, wanted to knock the captains of the nuclear industry down and stuff jelly up their noses. But the peanut butter equation illustrates a point:
When scientists bang on their calculators, they come up with a list of things that kill lots of people, but don't scare us much.
Likewise they can produce a list of things that don't kill many people, but of which we live in dread. Consider these disparities, for instance:
