I breifly touched on Nanotechnology a few days ago in my "Concrescence, Many waves become one" article. I havn't been reporting on the impact of Nanotechnology enough, but in simple terms it's out of this world.
IBM just announced, after nearly 5 years in development (along with many other of their pet projects I will report on) that they have created the first array of carbon Nanotube transistors.

Nanotechnology has been a popular term recently, but has been since the term was coined by K. Eric Drexler in his book "Engines of Creation". It has been a popular term used by hackers and computer scientists such as myself since.
The problem with current computers is simply silicon. Silicon has barriers, not only in it's speed, but in it's ability to function past the limit of size. With size, silicon can't be used, even with the latest ultraviolet lithography, past a certain size because it just can't function there without error. This is where carbon Nanotubes come in. Carbon nanotubes have been talked about for years, and because of their strength could even be used for miles long cables supporting an "elevator" to space. In this application, IBM is using carbon nanotubes to replace the need for silicon in computer chips entirely.

Purdue NanoTechnology Initiative (NTI) The objective of the Purdue Nanotechnology Initiative is to demonstrate novel techniques for the design and fabrication of nanoelectronic devices by the chemical manipulation of nanometer (10 meters) sized clusters and molecular wires. These efforts are made possible by the combined efforts of an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Physics who were brought together under an ARO/URI (1992-97). Metallic nanoclusters and molecular wires have been studied for some time as two active but distinct fields of research. We have recently been able to combine the expertise from these two fields to fabricate a Linked Cluster Network (LCN) : a two-dimensional superlattice consisting of nanometer-sized gold clusters electronically linked by pi-conjugated organic molecules (right). The procedure is to first form a monolayer of gold nanocrystals of uniform size which are kept from coalescing by encapsulating each gold cluster in an insulating layer of dodecanethiol ((CH Our work at Purdue has shown that organic linking molecules can provide tight mechanical and electronic binding leading to stable and reproducible cluster networks that can carry large current densities (~ 10 A / cm2). This demonstration opens up numerous possibilities. While the LCN's studied to date involve gold clusters and a limited set of conjugated linking molecules, the synthesis, characterization, and modeling techniques that have been developed can be extended to LCN's with different cluster materials and linking molecules leading to many different applications in nanotechnology. For example, if the molecular wires can be doped, then the resulting low resistance LCN's could be used to implement molecular electronic devices or to form self-assembled interconnects for conventional electronic devices or to make ultra-sensitive chemical sensors. Alternatively, LCN's made with magnetic clusters could be useful for information storage while LCN's made with special organic molecules could have strong non-linear optical properties useful for optical limiters.

As reported in Smalltimes , a study done for NASA's Institute for Advanced Concepts by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems concludes that a useful self-replicating machine could be less complex than a Pentium IV chip, and uncovered no road blocks to extending macroscale systems to microscale and then to nanoscale self-replicating systems. Merkle Further information about self replicating systems is available at http://www.zyvex.com/nanotech/selfRep.html From Foresight Update No. 9, page 4, June 1990; a publication of the Foresight Institute The NASA study on which this article was based is available on the web at: In the summer of 1980, NASA and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) sponsored a summer study by 15 NASA program engineers and 18 educators from U.S. universities to investigate advanced automation for space missions. The resulting 400-page report included a 150-page chapter on "Replicating Systems Concepts: Self-Replicating Lunar Factory and Demonstration" which proposed a 20-year program to develop a self-replicating general purpose lunar manufacturing facility (a Self Replicating System, or SRS) that would be placed on the lunar surface. The design was based entirely on conventional technology. The "seed" for the facility, to be landed on the lunar surface from Earth to start the process, was 100 tons (approximately four Apollo missions). Once this 100-ton seed was in place, all further raw materials would be mined from the lunar surface and processed into the parts required to extend the SRS. A significant advantage of this approach for space exploration would be to reduce or eliminate the need to transport mass from the Earthwhich is relatively expensive.

Nanotechnology, as it is expected to develop during the next 30 years, offers the potential to cure all physical diseases, reverse aging and prolong or restore vital youth, provide abundant and almost limitless wealth, open the frontiers of space, and in general empower individuals to seek fulfillment of their wildest dreams, within, of course, the limits imposed by the laws of physics. It also offers the potential to produce our worst nightmares. The transition from our current world to the world of nanotechnology will be a time of immense danger, instability, and uncertainty, as well as a time of immense opportunities. Surviving this transition, and profiting from it, will require the efforts of many energetic and talented people. I became very much interested in nanotechnology in 1986, and over the past twelve years I have also become increasingly interested in the potential of hypertext information systems for publishing information and conducting discussions. I am creating this web site to forward discussions of, and (I hope) the development of nanotechnology.
