INTRODUCTION
Z zinc extends its life, helps saving natural resources and energy .
Besides, its use in galvanizing of iron and steel, it finds applications in :
  • Die casting alloys, for automotive equipment and house hold appliances, fitting, toys, tools , Brasses, Dry cells, Agriculture, Chemicals, for tyre and rubber goods, Pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and cosmetics etc.
With industrial development in India use of zinc has increased considerably, however, specific consumption is much lower as compared to other developing countries. The most important raw material for the production of zinc is sulphide ore from which zinc is extracted either through pyro-metallurgical route or through hydro-metallurgical-electrowin route. At present nearly 80% of the worlds production of primary zinc is through hydrometallurgical route the balance is through pyro-metalurgical route.

Extractive Metallurgy Division
Mintek's Extractive Metallurgy Division combines the two important fields of minerals engineering and hydrometallurgy. Our work in process development and design ranges from preliminary evaluations of orebodies using borehole-core material to major pilot-plant campaigns that involve up to several hundred tons of material. We also undertake studies aimed at improving the design and operating efficiency of specific unit operations.
Gold
Mintek played a key role in the development of the carbon-in-pulp process for extracting gold from whole ores. Resin-in-pulp technology, which has now progressed to the stage where a demonstration plant is planned, offers further potential improvements in recoveries and economics. A novel solvent-extraction technique for gold refining was demonstrated during 1997, and the first commercial plant has now been commissioned. Other major developments include NIMCIX technology for contacting adsorbents with pulps or solutions, equipment for carbon regeneration , and bacterial oxidation of refractory ores. Our 'GoldTest' service is used for the design and evaluation of process flowsheets, to help new producers to come on-stream and existing ones to optimize their processes.

Aims and Scope: Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review
publishes papers dealing with both applied and theoretical aspects of extractive and process metallurgy and mineral processing. It emphasizes research germane to specific industrial processes and research that examines economic and environmental issues as well as basic engineering technology. Review papers devoted to one genesis, properties and uses of minerals, the scientific, engineering and economic aspects of the extraction, separation and purification of minerals and metals, and the post-treatment of mineral processing and extractive treatment of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy effluents are also invited. In addition to regular issues, special issues addressing narrowly focused subjects of regional or topical significance are published when the Editors feel there is sufficient interest among readers.
