The AMRG encourages investigations into all areas of ancient and historical metallurgy, including mining, primary metal production, artefact manufacturing, slag and residue studies, cultural aspects of metallurgy and metals, geophysical survey of production sites, and archaeomagnetic dating of high-temperature features. Aims Teaching The AMRG comprises several academic staff of the Department, PhD/MPhil researchers, undergraduate students undertaking Final Year Dissertations in this subject area, and visiting and honorary researchers. Staff and students of the AMRG are actively involved in fieldwork and laboratory based projects. The AMRG welcomes enquiries on all aspects of archaeometallurgy.

45. Bicycle Metallurgy I
metallurgy for Cyclists The Basics. By Scot Nicol. The sixpart series we re about to start will examine metallurgy as it applies to bicycles.

Metallurgy for Cyclists The Basics By Scot Nicol What is the best material to use in building a bicycle frame - steel, aluminum, titanium or carbon fiber? What about something even more exotic? While this certainly isn't as important a topic as who will replace Shannon on "Beverly Hills: 90210," it is fodder for lengthy debates among bike junkies (like myself). The six-part series we're about to start will examine metallurgy as it applies to bicycles. If we do our job right, you will be educated about all the popular materials currently used in bicycle-frame construction, and we'll take a look at what you can expect for the future. What I also hope to do is give you a "BS" filter for the clever and often misleading ads that our industry uses to prey on the underinformed. It really doesn't matter that boralyn was used for tank armor, or that rocket scientists designed your bike. You don't even have to wear a white lab coat to design a good bike. Sound engineering and an intimate knowledge of the biomechanical interface between bike and rider are the only prerequisites. To begin, you have to understand that the traditional bicycle frame is a highly evolved mechanical structure - highly evolved as in 100 years of tinkering. Attempts are constantly made to improve on its design, but most do little improving. Just designing a better frame may look like a simple problem, but it's not. Small improvements are made with materials and engineering advances, but improving by leaps and bounds doesn't happen - unless you believe the ads.

General Failure Analysis Procedure
Although the sequence and the steps may vary depending upon the character of the failure, some of the steps that may comprise a typical failure analysis are shown below:
  • Collection of background data (review documentation and speak with appropriate individuals) Selection of failed and unfailed samples for examination Preliminary examination of the failed part Nondestructive evaluation Mechanical testing Macroscopic examination and analysis Microscopic examination and analysis Determination of failure mode. Chemical analysis Fracture mechanics considerations Full scale testing under service conditions Analysis of the evidence Formulation of conclusions Recommendations to prevent reoccurrence

Stress Corrosion Cracking
Stress corrosion cracking is a failure mechanism that is caused by environment, susceptible material, and tensile stress. Temperature is a significant environmental factor affecting cracking. For stress corrosion cracking to occur all three conditions must be met simultaneously. The component needs to be in a particular crack promoting environment, the component must be made of a susceptible material, and there must be tensile stresses above some minimum threshold value. An externally applied load is not required as the tensile stresses may be due to residual stresses in the material. The threshold stresses are commonly below the yield stress of the material.
Stress Corrosion Cracking Failures
Stress corrosion cracking is an insidious type of failure as it can occur without an externally applied load or at loads significantly below yield stress. Thus, catastrophic failure can occur without significant deformation or obvious deterioration of the component. Pitting is commonly associated with stress corrosion cracking phenomena.
