Nature of the Work Employment Job Outlook Earnings ... Sources of Additional Information
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. They work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. They also develop power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing. Mechanical engineers also design tools that other engineers need for their work. The field of nanotechnology, which involves the creation of high-performance materials and components by integrating atoms and molecules, is introducing entirely new principles to the design process. Computers assist mechanical engineers by accurately and efficiently performing computations, and by permitting the modeling and simulation of new designs as well as facilitating changes to existing designs. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) are used for design data processing and for turning the design into a product.

Welcome to mechanical engineering at OSU! The Construction CAM for thenew mechanical engineering Building (Recorded Movies from the CAM),
http://www.mecheng.ohio-state.edu/
Welcome to Mechanical Engineering at OSU! We are one of nine departments in the College of Engineering, and have been long recognized for the high quality of our academic and research programs. We are a core engineering discipline and are central to the mission of The Ohio State University and its land grant heritage. The breadth of our discipline has afforded us many natural links to other academic programs within and outside the College of Engineering. The resulting interdisciplinary links have allowed us to develop strengths in emerging areas of engineering, even as we maintain our excellence in more traditional areas. We invite you to browse our web site, and learn more about our undergraduate and graduate programs, our popular student team projects and competitions, our strong sponsored research programs, and our talented and highly qualified faculty . Other links on the Home Page point to information of interest to our alumni and friends, and to past and prospective employers of our graduates. We invite you, as well, to get updates on the progress of our new building , and our accompanying capital campaign . We are glad you chose to visit our web site. Stay awhile and learn more about us!
