This may be a strange way to tell you about myself, but I do tend to use my trips as milestones in my life, and they are as good a place as any to hang some of my story upon. My parents started me off travelling when I was very young, driving my brother and sister and I around Canada and the USA. With my grade school and high school I continued my journies on our annual two week tours, going as far afield as Switzerland and Germany, and heading west (Saskatoon, Winnipeg, etc), east (Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Labrador), and south (New York City, New England), and even a bit north in Ontario. It was a fun school. During our undergraduate years my high-school sweetheart Brian and I went skiing in Vermont and Quebec, and later visited Cuba, Costa Rica, and Mexico, and even spent 3 months touring Britain and Europe, including Scotland, my Mother's birthplace, and Croatia, my Father's. On that first trip I got as far as Greece, and really had a great time. I wasn't really out then, which seems a bit odd since I'd been with Brian for six years then, but that's the kind of strange contradiction that happens when you grow up gay in a straight world.

CARLOW INTERNATIONAL INCORPORATED , named for a county in the Republic of Ireland, has been in the business of human factors engineering ( HFE ) for 20 years. HFE is a combination of behavioral science and engineering which addresses the needs, capabilities, requirements and accommodations of people in the design of complex systems.
The primary objectives of HFE are to reduce the incidence and impact of human error; enhance the usability of complex systems; reduce cognitive workload and system manning; improve training; and increase system affordability.
Carlow personnel have been applying HFE to maritime and offshore systems, manned spaceflight (for every manned spaceflight program since the Mercury Project), aircraft systems, transportation systems, information systems, consumer products, pharmaceutical plants, medical systems and devices, and systems and equipment for the aged and disabled List of Carlow Publications high center mounted brake light on all passenger vehicles sold in the US after 1986. Ergonomics
Ergonomics is matching the job to the worker and product to the user. Ergonomics and human factors are often used interchangeably in workplaces. Both describe the interaction between the worker and the job demands. The difference between them is ergonomics focuses on how work affects workers, and human factors emphasizes designs that reduce the potential for human error. Ergonomic hazards refer to workplace conditions that pose the risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system of the worker. Examples of musculoskeletal injuries include tennis elbow (an inflammation of a tendon in the elbow) and carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition affecting the hand and wrist). Ergonomic hazards include repetitive and forceful movements, vibration, temperature extremes, and awkward postures that arise from improper work methods and improperly designed workstations, tools, and equipment.

Human Factors Engineering
(No longer a luxury for FDA-regulated firms) Human factors engineering (ergonomics) is all about designing tools for human use . More formally, it is the scientific discipline concerned with the interaction between humans and artifacts and the design of systems where people participate. We have long believed that the FDA , once it resolved its hardware and software design & maintenance safety and effectiveness issues, would turn its attention to ergonomics. In fact, many believe that user errors may be the last bastion of equipment safety and effectiveness problems. The CDRH has recently put up a new section on its web site " Reducing Use Erro r". Even before the recent Institute of Medicine's report " To Err is Human ", the FDA was beginning to interpret the recent Quality System Regulation ( ) in the context of ergonomics issues. Consider the following examples: Human Factors Implications of the New GMP Rule Incorporating Human Factors in Risk Management Human Factors and the FDA's Goals:Improved Medical Device Design Some related CDRH Human Factors Publications Establishing and promoting an effective corporate human factors engineering program is not only a current regulatory compliance issue; it is very good for the Corporate bottom line. Products that are "ergonomically correct" are: much more desirable to users (users become more productive)
