Work...And The Human Body... What A Company Understands Could Make A Difference in Their Workers' Compenation Loss Experience THE SINGLE LARGEST CATEGORY OF WORKERS' COMPENSATION INJURY The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that cumulative trauma disorder (CTD), also known as repetitive motion strain, is the single largest injury category driving workers' compensation costs in the United States. CTD also results in the longest absences from work. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and back strain are among a few "CTD" disorders. These disorders translate into people and business costs. In addition to the impact on the physical well-being of employees, long absences may result in lost productivity and increased workers' compensation claim costs... all impacting the bottom line. INSTIGATOR: IMBALANCE IN JOB TASK-DEMANDS AND THE HUMAN BODY When a job-task demands we use our body in a way that is not natural to its capabilities, this can place "unnatural stresses" on body tissue, especially where the task is repetitive, prolonged, and labor intensive. Demanding tasks are many, varied, and found virtually in every industry. They also can result in injuries and disorders, including permanent disability.

Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics, 2nd Edition Editor: Gavriel Salvendy (Purdue Univ.) Add To Cart Purchase In orchestrating this book, Dr. Salvendy invited contributions from more than 100 of the foremost authorities around the world. Each of its 60 chapters was reviewed by an international advisory panel comprised of some of today's leading figures in human factors and ergonomics. While each chapter establishes the theoretical and empirical foundations of the subject under discussion, the book's approach is primarily applications-oriented. Hence throughout readers will find case studies, examples, figures, and tables that optimize the usability of the material presented. Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics, Second Edition is certain to have as profound an impact on the evolution of the science of designing for human use as did its predecessor. It is an indispensable tool for human factors and ergonomics specialists, safety and industrial hygiene professionals and engineers, human resource professionals and managers in manufacturing and service industries, and for educational institutions and government. Over the past decade, human factors and ergonomics have come to play an ever more prominent role in everything from product design to productivity management. And no single book has done more to help precipitate their rise to prominence than the first edition of this handbook. Revised and updated to reflect the many important advances that have taken place in the field over the past decade, Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics, Second Edition repeats the success of its predecessor. It brings you: *Contributions from more than 100 recognized international experts *The most up-to-date coverage of equipment, workplace, and job design; design for health and safety; evaluation methodologies; and human-computer interaction *Completely revised and updated material, including 23 new chapters *Theoretical and empirical foundations of every subject *An applications-oriented approach packed with case studies, examples, figures, and tables

Why the Interest in Computer Operator's Health?
Diverse Discomforts in an Evolving Computer World
Computer users are suffering from a diversity of maladies being attributed to computer use. From vision problems, to incapacitating pain in the hands and wrists, to compressed cervical vertebrae, many computer users are in pain. After years of training new users to feel comfortable with software, Maribeth Carter Yarnell, PhD., determined that although developing software was becoming ever-more "user friendly," hardware was becoming more powerful, more utilitarian, smaller, but rarely more accommodating to the human body. The way users interfaced with the hardware seemed to promote both physical and psychological stress which was interfering with proficiency and health. Ergonomics and Human Factors
While experts argue the value of ergonomic equipment and procedures, Dr. Yarnell accumulated a set of exercises, workstation arrangements, and postures that relieved much of the stress suffered when computing.
